Moreso I would say that with Ashcroft dominating the reformed Verve McCabe(and indeed Jones) was side lined, stuff like The Rolling People predates there first spilt if I remember correctly although it would probably have been a lot better recorded back then without Ashcrofts vocals dominating.
Yeah, I stumbled across some radio sessions and things years ago, and amongst them were early versions of "The Rolling People" and "Come On" from 1995. A couple of songs on Urban Hymns came out of the band just jamming, which was then edited down and Dickie would sing something something over the top. Most of it started as an Ashcroft solo album though.
For all the faults of the Verve post-1995 though, I do like the live version of "Come On" that closed their Haigh Hall gig in 1998:
