The Beach Boys/Brian Wilson are fucking brilliant thread

Nowhere Man

I find that thoroughly depressing, and completely uncalled for. So as long as a person's famous in the Beach Boys universe, that makes it okay to ignore all all of the shit he's done? Makes you wonder what would happen if Charles Manson could get wifi!

PaulTMA

I always saw it as the only credible BB forum, but things seemed to take a turn after Brian did a Q&A there last year.  I previously got banned for being critical about the dreadful No Pier Pressure album and Joe Thomas' appalling production in general, which somehow I don't think I'm alone with those opinions.

PaulTMA

Just realised I had moaned about the same old shit earlier in the thread

Nowhere Man

It's become a lot harder to have individual opinions on that forum. Everyone other poster seems to have a stick up their arse.

I remember after the Q&A, getting into a small argument with Howie Edelson who had interviewed Brian several times but yet was shitting on the forum members by saying the questions forum members asked Brian were "sophomoric" and "6th grade level questions".

Edit: Come to think of it, pretty sure I said something similar earlier on!

Oh fucking hell. I finally got around to reading the Rocky Pamplin thread on SmileySmile.net. For those who don't know he was a bodyguard for The Beach Boys in the late 70s and has a book coming out.

He started talking about his reasoning of why he and another Beach Boy bodyguard, Stan Love (Mike's cousin) brutally beat up Dennis.

What a fucking piece of human shit. Bare in mind Dennis and Brian between them already had severe problems with mental illness and drug abuse. Absolute pair of Cunts.

Well now I'm depressed again.
(Noticed that thread mentioned elsewhere - deliberately hadn't/still haven't read it
- not really bothering with that board much now, just dip in occasionally)

<nerdy factwhore mode>1980? I've seen it mentioned as happening in 81/82 pos even 83  fake edit & it didn't keep Brian and Dennis seperated</factwhore> Unreliable versions claim they were coked up or at least boozed up themselves. scum.

A close friend of Dennis' posted this on that forum a while back
(he doesn't post there much any longer):

It wasn't pre-Shawn; it occurred at a house they had together in the Marina.

I bought the LP that serves as my avatar at Amoeba Records in Hollywood maybe five years ago, and it's in a clear plastic sleeve to which someone has drawn in a cartoon balloon pointing at Rocky's head that says, "I beat the merda out of Dennis Wilson."
How bizarre...  Not to malign him, but I'd written on another board about a year ago about bumping into Rocky, and it was in front of Amoeba Records on Sunset Blvd.!  Sadly, he looked rather thin, and he was working handing out free movie passes.
I happened to be in a 3 piece suit, and didn't think he'd remember me.  However,
when I mentioned my name, the color drained from his face.  Maybe, just maybe, he's paid the price all his life for what he & Stan did that day.  Cause it sure brought the end on a lot quicker.

Back to Beach Boys business as usual & a Smiley smile thread that's semi worth reading (gets sidetracked by various members insulting each other etc *rolls eyes*)

Transcript of ""Mike Love's Cosmic Journey" by Erik Hedegaard in the February 25, 2016 issue of Rolling Stone. It's the current issue, pgs 42-47."
http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,23402.msg560199.html#msg560199

Mike Love defends himself & wonders why he's the villain (ugh - contains several serious 'can't you see how much of a cunt you sound' moments) he's still bitter & blaming Brian over not being originally credited for song lyrics. - writer's half being a flippant jerk and half calling him out. Bruce comes off like a dick too.

Debbie KL's commentary in the 3rd post is worth reading (friend/past girlfriend of Brian's).

Mike Love - comment in brackets by Erik Hedegaard
"You do a lot of pot, LSD, cocaine, you name it, paranoia runs rampant, so, yes, Brian could have become extra-, ultrasensitive to attitudes, you know, body language, or whatever. My psyche is mainly . . . except for the, maybe, moments of true frustration or anger or whatever, saying things in a way that's been misconstrued. Maybe I'm cast in that light, which is unfortunate but maybe deserving. But can I be responsible? Should Mike Love take a beating for Brian's paranoid schizophrenia?" (Brian is diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder.)

Love continues, "My contribution was positive lyrics. Why the f*** should I be the scapegoat and the fall guy for that other stuff?" He says a while later, "Smile . . . that's a misnomer if I ever heard of one." "

Bruce Johnston -
"Everybody's kind of tried to dial Mike out and make Brian a deity," "I mean, you get so swept away by Brian's incredible production abilities that people probably overlook the fact that they hear all this through Mike Love's words."

Mike -  "I guess a lot of people don't understand I have a sense of humor that's kind of wack, or different, or sometimes bratty, so I get labeled with that and there goes my image, right down the toilet."

By the end of the interview him and his wife are doing role play of what he'd say to Brian if Brian got in touch (Mike implies Brian's wife/people/handlers/etc are deliberately preventing him phoning him)

Historical Mike Love & his lawyers batshittery/cuntyness that turned up again in the other thread - the thrown out as totally frivolous attempt to sue over The Mail On Sunday's Brian Live / Smile promo cd

http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/cassius-love-vs-sonny-wilson-2005-lawsuit-text.67046/

So much wrongness.
Al gets totally thrown under the bus too for some reason.

Nowhere Man

Mike Love is just the biggest twat around, and to be honest these days I feel a bit sad for him more than anything. He's got everything he ever fucking wanted (the band name, the songwriting credits, more money than he could ever spend, his own family) and has spent almost 50 years using transcendental meditation for stress, but is still the most unhappy, ungrateful, passive-agressive dickhead ever. Despite everything he's got going for him in his life he still feels hateful towards a family member that's been dead for over 30 years and his mentally ill cousin who hears voices in his head telling him to kill himself, has been addicted to drugs and drinking, and spent years being tortured by a control freak of a father and a psychiatrist. Never mind the fact that no one would know who Mike Love was without Brian Wilson!

But poor Mike still wants vindication because Brian gets more attention.

Shaky

Mike Love is truly the Dave Mustaine of the music world.

Well yes.  All of those things.  Almost certainly.

But in spite of EVERYTHING, he still contributed important lyrics and an absolute ton of fabulous vocals (leads and bvs) to what I consider to be some of the greatest pop music of my lifetime.

As a result, I just don't get stressed over the other stuff.  Life's too short.

Just accidentally heard Disney Girls.
"Now I'll fill your hands With kisses and a Tootsie Roll" is a fucking terrible lyric.

Why did nobody tell Bruce he wasn't writing a song for The Carpenters?

What did Bruce Johnston ever do for us?

The Nearest Faraway Place (they even let him play this live on their 1970 UK tour)
Deirdre (co-written with Brian)
Tears In The Morning (a better single than This Whole World?  Really?)
Disney Girls (good enough for Art Garfunkel and The Captain and Tennille)
Here Comes The Night (disco atrocity)
Endless Harmony (the very definition of 'schmaltz')
She Believes In Love Again (pointless song on weak album)

That represents the vast bulk of his writing contributions to the Beach Boys from 1966 to 2016.
Well done Bruce.  An impressive haul for just 50 years.

PS Mind you, he did some cool surf/hot rod stuff with Terry Melcher from 1963-65.
PPS And I quite like 'Brand New Old Friends'.
PPPS I don't even know what to think about 'I Write The Songs'
PPPPS He's still the best in the business at adjusting the position of his on-stage microphone

Nowhere Man

He's the best in the business at clapping his hands.

The whole inexplicable medley singles thing currently clogging up the TOTP repeats & getting discussed over in the BBC4 thread, esp Beach Boys Gold caused this to happen.

The Beach Boys 'performing' their very own original hits medley single
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbX3rKMHYy4

At one point poor Brian's forced to mime to Carl's original vocals (he'd got pissed off with the band not being professional live or something and quit to do a solo album), Dennis is either to drunk/high to bother miming or hating the entire project & just doing the bare minimum to not get sacked again (or both).

Beach Boys related trollinsanity from the self-proclaimed "Presidente de Kokomo"

Should The Beach Boys Record an Amusement Park Themed Album?

also Scott Wilson may just have trolled an over excited fan of his dad over on twitter

Scott Wilson: "I went to lunch today at my dads old hang out (Chez Jay)
Induct Dennis Wilson: ‏"Scott I am going there in a couple months! Not to be a creeper, but where did he like to sit?"

Scott Wilson: "at the bar"

*cracks up at the fucking obvious answer*
