Until recently I thought the lyric of Manfred Mann's Blinded By The Light was "Blinded by the light / revved up like a douche, another runner in the night"

It's "Deuce" apparently, as in the car. I suppose that makes more sense.

I always thought Freddie was going on about "deodorant" in Living On My Own.

Norton Canes

From Good To My Baby by The Beach Boys:

And when I give her my love it's between her and me...

misheard as:

And when I give her my love it's between her knees...

There are also the possibly apocryphal Lennon/Beatles ones:

"She's a prick teaser" - Daytripper

"Big fat Jew" - Baby You're A Rich Man

Stoneage Dinosaurs

Bob Dylan, Hey Mr Tambourine Man - "cast your dance and spill my wee" instead of "cast your dancing spell my way"

Isnt Anything

What about how I heard the lyrics of Deep Blue Something's "Breakfast at Tiffany's" when I was 7?

QuoteAnd I said, what about Breakfast at Tiffany's?
She said, "I think I remember the bell rang"
As I recall, I think, "we're booking a high tea"
And I said, "well that's the one thing we've got"

Makes it sound mundane but I still prefer it.

Twed

I'm gonna tear into the other realm
It'll all turn to dust and we'll all fall down

Dr Rock

Any song that features 'the rain' can be substituted with 'Lorraine'

The Cult

Here comes Lorraine
I love Lorraine

The Beatles

If Lorraine comes
They run and hide their heads
They might as well be dead
If Lorraine comes
If Lorraine comes

Adele

"I set fire to Lorraine, watched her burn",

same song (written by springsteen, in fact) has the line "the calliope crashed to the ground", which I've always heard & preferred as "like goliath he crashed to the ground".

& springsteen, I think, renders your line as "wrapped up tight another runner in the night", suggesting that the MMEB version is itself from a mishear.

Adele

"I set fire to Lorraine, watched her burn",

& conversely-

I was talkin' to Chuck in his Genghis Khan suit
And his wizard's hat
He spoke of his movie and how he was makin'
A new sound track

And then we spoke of kids on the coast
And different types of organic soap
And the way suicides don't leave notes
Then we spoke of the rain
Always back to the rain

I was speakin' to Phil who was given to pills
And small racing cars
He had given them up since his last crack-up
Had carried him too far

Then we spoke of the movies and verse
And the way an actress held her purse
And the way life at times can get worse
Then we spoke of the rain
Always back to the rain

Ah, she's a wild child
And nobody can get at her
She's a wild child
Oh, and nobody can get to her

Kryton

Toto's - Hold the line in my mind was 'Hold the liiiight'.

Also Paul Simon's 'You can call me Al' - I always thought the song was about a fellah called Eddie. 'Eddie when you can call me, you can call me aL'. I THOUGHT IT WAS A SONG ABOUT HIM MEETING HIS BODYGUARD FOR THE FIRST TIME AND TALKING ABOUT HIS LIFE.

"The moment I wake up
Before I put on my makeup
I save a little bread for you"

Ta for leaving me some toast.

Aaaaand, if you tolerate this, then your children wear v-necks
wear v-necks
wear v-necks

Straight Faced Customer

I always thought Britney was singing 'Baby, don't you wanna / Disappoint me?' on Slave 4 U, and that's what the darker regions of my mind will stick with (she actually sings 'Dance upon me').

Mantle Retractor

Right Next Door To Hell by Guns n' Roses became "Grandad's Going To Hell" on my first (and all subsequent listens).

Isn't he meant to be singing "baby you're a rich fag jew"? It was to poke fun at Eppy for being gay and jewish.

I see a ship in the harbour, I can. A shallow bay.

Yet another moment of suddenly realising it's not that after all.

Tombola

Metallica - For Whom the Bell Tolls

"Time march is on!"

Like it's a cousin of the time warp.

Keebleman

The second verse of Paul Simon's Slip Sliding Away has the lady claim that, "A good day ain't got no rain."  I have always heard it as, "A good day ain't got no meaning,"  so much so that for a time I simply assumed that all the online lyrics must be copied from the same mistaken source.

Simon sings it with a little hiccup at the end of 'rain' which makes it sounds like the word has two syllables.  And my mishearing fits the song so much better: a life so bleak that the best you can hope for is emptiness.  Plus 'meaning' is a much more accurate rhyme for the next line: "A bad day's when I lie in bed and think of things that might have been."

I think I'll write and tell him.

"Under neon loneliness,
Motorcycle emptiness"

What? That's nonsense. What even is 'motorcycle emptiness'?

Whenever I heard it, before reading the lyrics:

"I'm dying of loneliness,
Oh this I call emptiness"

There. Everyone understands.

I never knew what the lyrics were but my best guess was "I'm nutty on loneliness, motorcycle emptiness, Oh nutty on loneliness, motorcycle emptiness". It made sense to me, like he is addicted to loneliness. The weird thing is that the first line sounds different so I heard "I'm nutty" then "Oh nutty" but the lyrics are apparently "under neon" both times.

Cuellar

In Jimmy Nail's seminal Crocodile Shoes:

Waitress sure looks pretty
And that's a bad sign.

My 6/7 year old ears heard:

Waitress Shore looks pretty
And that's a bad sign.

Why would a coastline looking nice be a bad sign? What does it signify? Enigmatic!

For years I thought the chorus to 'Hard to Handle' was:

'Pretty little thing let me light your chemicals,
Mama I'm sure hard to handle now, yes I am'

A mate used to insist it was "Camel", the popular brand of cigarettes. Which, as seduction gestures go, is more conventional than a candle. Another mate used to hear "I can move, Move, Move Any mountain" as "I can move, Move, Move Baby Nazis" which makes less sense, but strangely does sound right.

I initially heard ''You're in my light'' (pronounced 'ly-eeeeeeee-at') in Coal Chamber's 'Loco' as ''You're in Al-Qaida'', which is more fun to sing along to.

I always thought that Rage Against the Machine's 'Killing In The Name Of' was actually "chillin' in a gay bar"

When I was about 10 I thought the bit in Smells Like Teen Spirit when Kurt Cobain sings "her denial" was "ruddy Nile".  I kind of wish it was.
