Glastonbury Festival 2015

I don't think its any secret that Glastonbury is the least well paid of any of the major UK music festivals. Its still seen something you do because its a charity based festival and because if you're lucky enough to get televised then you may see some record sales out of it. On top of that some people just want to play it because the vibe is so good and its sometimes seen as an honour to be asked. A friend of mine is a reasonably well known singer songwriter and he told me once he never really makes any money from playing at it. For some smaller artists I guess thats not the point. They're in there, they're playing, they're having fun. That same line of thinking wouldn't extend to something like the V Festival or T in the Park though i don't think.

one would imagine the 220 quid entrance fee makes advertising a bit unnecessary and takes the festival out of a lot of people's reach

This would be a fair point if entry to Reading/Leeds for a weekend wasn't £213. Latitude £200. T in the Park £205. Bestival £195.

It's the most expensive festival, but not by much, and more than justifies the cost with what they put on. How many stages are there now? It must be pushing 50 at least?

Quote from: Jamie Oliver is fat on June 30, 2015, 06:21:44 PMI always picture it as being full of music industry twats and upcycling middle class pricks

This is true but everyone else is there too[nb]Except for people who aren't white, of course.[/nb]. Lads wearing old football shirts ironically. Scouse pill enthusiasts. Hippies. Old geezers. Weirdos. Families in sensible outdoor wear. Twats. Dickheads. Arseholes. Members of the Socialist Worker's Party. Girls from Essex called Saskia. Real ale fans. Main Stage Twats. There were probably more than a few Tories there too.

Can we just have a moment to take in the fact that Reading and Leeds costs £213 please. Thanks.

I enjoyed looking at these photos http://www.buzzfeed.com/lynzybilling/photos-that-capture-the-horror-of-the-post-glastonbury-co?bffbuk&utm_term=4ldqphz#.gvBYbzydL

I for one think the BBC's coverage is massively one sided in showing people relentlessly jumping up and down, smiling and having a great time. They should really also cover the horror and misery which we all know is payment for such malarkey.  You should definitely be able to hit the red button on your remote to see someone vomiting into a ditch or perhaps wetting themselves. Mark E Smith should be seen as a bit of trend setter there I think.

The third photo down in that link is my ex-nephew (his mum split from my brother in law some years ago).  He was complaining of Facebook about some photo being used that he hadn't given permission for.  Now I understand.

During one of the night-time acts (I forget which) there was some glorious coverage of a woman clearly there just trying to enjoy the music being duffed around by the jumping and blatantly drunk and/or tripping twat wearing stupid clothes next to her.  It went back to that image several times (presumably both that particular cameraman and editor thought it was good value) and she was visibly getting more and more angry.  On the last shot the poor woman was nowhere to be seen, having moved away I guess.

As for p-funk members I don't think Michael Hampton was there, I only recognised George, Blackbyrd McKnight, Lige Curry and Gary Shiders son Garrett.

You're right - who I thought was Hampton was actually McKnight.  It was the dreads that confused me.

Also, did anyone else spot Robert Peston on stage giving it the jumps during the final song?

Custard

I take back my earlier comments about Charlie XCX being a load of nothing, as I watched her whole set now and enjoyed it a fair lot. Tunes are a bit samey, but least she has personality, energy, and an inflatable guitar. Boom Clap, I Love It, and SuperLove are great pop tunes

Enjoyed watching yer Chems again. The build up and eventual release of Galvanise is masterful. The crowd were mental into it, too. Which always helps, when watching on TV

Might watch the Libertines, or Death Cab  next. Its been so great watching all these full sets on iPlayer. Basically dragging Glastonbury out for a week!

On a old VHS video somewhere I've got footage from Glastonbury 1997  (back in the days when Channel 4 covered it with Jools Holland presenting and you got about an hour of footage per day) and a performance from Bentley Rhythm Ace. The camera cut to a guy completely tripping of his head in the audience. It was a fantastic image.

edit . Modern technology being what it is I can now pass you straight over to that footage...   https://youtu.be/27HIliAvn-k?t=4m35s

Its quite funny watching the whole of that clip and seeing the difference in the sort of people in the audience compared to now. It all looks so much grittier.

No Chris Morris on the funky bass guitar at this year's Glastonbury either.

Fantastic indeed.

Puts me in mind of this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzwhQFxaVPk[NB]although some/most of you might be more familiar with this version - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRVaU9X0rOs[/NB].  The guy in the middle kills it from 16secs.

Hah that's great. You'd never get that these days - attractive female young things smiling and having a great time is all you see in crowd shots.

...except for the bit I mentioned, filmed at this year's Glastonbury festival of arts and music[NB]2015[/NB].

Having said that, the cameramen do seem to prefer lingering on said females, and also give the full "bottom to top" vertical pans of any attractive female performer.

I liked that clip so much I just snipped it out of the original upload and uploaded it to Youtube on its own:

Ah good effort but you cut it a bit short though. I like the bit near the end where he perks up then goes a bit mental.

Oh thank fuck, someone uploaded the Ryan Adams set to YouTube. I downloaded it there. Jesus it's brilliant.

I've set this to start at the version of Peaceful Valley, which is just astonishing.

Around the 24:10 mark in case it doesn't work.

EDIT: And the studio version for comparison: https://youtu.be/VQ9GvU7PbxE

El Unicornio, mang

It's still on iplayer too, along with all the others

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/group/b007r6vx

Download 'em while they're up though. The BBC removes them from Youtube eventually (I got my Sharon von Etten upload removed and got a  warning)

Don't the download files stop working after a while?

Paaaaul

He's suggesting downloading them from YouTube, not iPlayer.

You can download them from iplayer too, using get_iplayer
