Er, you've just linked to some footage from Magical Mystery Tour. Is there a joke here I'm missing?

Ha ha, no, my mistake, thanks for the heads up. It's been fixed and will now take you to the Rainbow Connection correctly.

Steven

Thank God you didn't paste that pornhub link by accident, eh, AJ?

here you go, a newly surfaced alternate take of I Am the Walrus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=bvvM14f3QRQ

JesusAndYourBush

Blimey!  I just clicked on an episode randomly... Zippy looked home-made and had a weird red tongue, Geoffrey wasn't Geoffrey... and Bungle... fucking hell!  He's nightmarish.

Gurke and Hare

Yes, Original Bungle. Always a shock when you first see him.

Serge

I now have the phrase 'Original Bungle' set to the tune of The Guess Who's 'American Woman' in my head.

Original Bungle didn't get much work after that apart from his cameo in 'The Shining', did he?

Am I going mad or does Original Bungle remind you of Peter from 'Fist Of Fun' at the start of this one?

Depeche Mode 'Personal Jesus' for me.

"And here's my friend Donny Oddlegs.."

Is Roy Skelton doing zippy at this stage, the voice is so off I can't tell.

There's enough verses there for everyone in Rainbow to be up above the streets and houses, spreading open their hairy legs if needs be.

Ever hear the full theme song ?

http://youtu.be/RJsaujSs7Fw

Was that written for the programme or was it a pre-existing song? If the former you've got to wonder what the process was in writing beyond the familiar TV titles and adding some meandering hippy verses that they probably presumed no-one was ever going to hear. I mean, I'm glad they did it because the couple of bits when it suddenly goes back to the familiar song I actually really like. The drummer on the Rainbow theme song is properly badass.

For an even more extreme version of 'fuck it, they'll never hear this bit, I'll do what I like now' check out the full theme of 'Some Mothers Do Ave Em' after the penny whistle bit that everyone knows. It suddenly turns into Lalo bloody Schifrin. "Oooooooh, do you feel lucky, punk?"

The full Two Ronnies theme similarly starts to briefly sound like an American cop show or a blaxploitation film in the middle.

Unfortunately I know nothing about it at all - I've tried a few basic searches and researches in the past and never got to the bottom of it. I'd guess it was an existing song beforehand, can't imagine someone writing those minor key interludes with a children's TV show in mind - but then again - ORIGINAL BUNGLE exists.

And yeah, those drum fills !

The full version of the original Doctor Who theme has Ron Grainer rapping about Delia Derbyshire contributing less than him to iconic music, and a bit about everyone in the Radiophonic Workshop being a fat, raging homosexual.

It's true; use the internet.

massive bereavement

I always thought the Rainbow theme had something to do with ex-members of The Spencer Davis Group (or am I confusing that with Magpie?), though logically it would be the three guys who did the musical spots on the original series.

Fantastic that so many episodes are now up on-line, but a pity they all seem to be from either 1972, 1977 or 1979. I mostly watched it during the Rod, Jane and Matthew (Corbett) era, which must have been around 1974/75, so naturally it would be those I'd want to see again.

Consignia

For all the speculating on the origins of the Rainbow theme tune, it does seem to be clearly stated on the wiki:

QuoteThe theme song for the show was actually a small part of the full version, also called 'Rainbow' and written by Hugh Portnow, Hugh Fraser and Tim Thomas of the band Telltale, who regularly appeared in the first series of the show. This was released by Music for Pleasure in 1973 with the B-side "Windy Day"

I wasn't looking for this, I just happened across it because I wanted to know when George first appeared

Woman : Where's your brother?
Girl : He's sleeping inside.
Woman : You're a good girl though

WHAT.

Also, that music at 3:35 is great.

And my god look at all that fodder at 5:10. Lucky buggers.

I don't remember Rainbow being this interesting at all.

Mr_Simnock

That original Bungle is a bit fucked up, No idea how that didn't give me nightmares when I was young. I always fancied Jane.

Don_Preston

Is there the episode where Geoffrey has an apeshit breakdown due to everyone's behaviour and starts cosplaying as a 1950s drill sergeant?

Top episode, that.

Well you've ruined that song for me forever. Or improved it.

What I love about these is the short films of everyday life. A little window into something utterly mundane, but often surprisingly different due to the age.
