I could go on for ages. These change regularly, too, although the top several tend to stay for longer.

Quote

Jaws
The Thin Red Line
Stand By Me
The Third Man
This Is Spinal Tap
Dazed & Confused
Back To The Future
Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner
The Thing
Day Of The Dead

Off the top of my head, baring in mind that I'm no film buff, rarely go to the cinema and usually take several years to get around to watching new, critically acclaimed films that everyone tells me I should go and watch. I like Ghostbusters a lot too, but chickened out and went for the more credible choices. Brazil, Rushmore, Once Upon A Time In The West and Fear & Loathing are great too, but I didn't want to simply repeat what everyone else has listed.

Steven

1. Withnail & I
2. The Shining
3. Fargo
4. The Killing Of A Chinese Bookie
5. Jaws
6. Chinatown
7. The Long Goodbye
8. Little Shop Of Horrors
9. Groundhog Day
10. 12 Monkeys

biggytitbo

A beautiful selection, glad to see a Laurel and Hardy film in there.

And Rear Window, can't believe I missed that off my selection. What an amazing film that is.

50. The Last Picture Show

Throw some Akira Kurosawa and Paul W.S Anderson in there and thats top list.

Although Commanod over Predator is interesting. I appreciate Commando is probably the pure action film in his ouvre but Predator seems overall the better film.

Commando does have the better one liners though.... tricky.

Considering comedy is apparently the purest most honest artform, not much of it mentioned here.

biggytitbo

More than half of mine were comedies.

Paul W.S. Anderson? Did you mean Paul Thomas Anderson, because I could definitely find room for There Will Be Blood... sadly I've never seen any Kurosawa.

edit: Yeah There Will Be Blood is in there already. I like a lot of his movies but not quite Top Ten material.

Off the top of my head in no particular order.

There Will Be Blood.
The Life Aquatic.
Figh Club.
Primer.
Mulholland Drive.
Twin Peaks The Return.
Grosse Point Blank.
Synecdoche New York.
Doctor Strangelove.
Brazil.

They Shoot Horses, Don't they?
One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest

Not counting documentaries...

All The President's Men
Magnolia
Goodfellas
Rear Window
The Thin Red Line
Quiz Show
Ed Wood
Star Wars
Easy Rider
Citizen Kane

Would have included a Woody Allen, but so hard to choose...Whatever Works is the first off the top of my head, as the best of his later material due to the Larry David bonus (especially so close to the dreadfully disappointing Clear History).

EOLAN

Have I done a list on this before. Whatever. So my top 10 off the top of my head.

Sherlock Jr.
Bringing Up Baby
The Big Sleep (dir. Howard Hawks)
Cabaret
Casablanca
Blue Velvet
The Producers (original version)
Rio Bravo
His Girl Friday
Monty Python's the Meaning of Life

Maybe I didn't need to highlight which version of the Big Sleep I had chosen; given the prominence of that director on my list. Only one silent, no Laurel and Hardy and most recent film being 1987. The last one sounds about right.

Swoz_MK

1. Jaws
1975 - Steven Spielberg
2. The Beyond
1981 - Lucio Fulci
3. The Man With Two Brains
1983 - Carl reiner
