I'm the same really - just comedy or at least funny people please Ads

Just started listening to the newest one. I was almost as bemused as Goldblum when Buxton asked him if his family is where he got his 'Middle Eastern/Eastern European' looks from. Has he never met a Jewish person before? Did he not know Goldblum was Jewish?

amputeeporn

Goldblum in full press day charm mode, which isn't unpleasant by any means, but nothing particularly special. Adam ever so slightly fumbling and abrupt as he can occasionally be with bigger names/people he's less familiar with.

I preferred the Nicky Wire chat as he seemed so much more interested in matching vibes with Adam, and less interested in his own career or whatever it was he was supposed to be promoting.

selectivememory

I don't really know anything about Goldblum outside of his films, so I didn't really know what to expect, but I found him very tedious in this, one of the most boring guests Adam's had on. Seems like the kind of person it would be exhausting to be around for very long. And I thought Adam did fine, but you could just sense Goldblum's indifference to anything he had to say when he spoke for more than a few seconds. These podcasts are good when there are actual conversations, not so much when one guy prattles on about himself for an hour.

That Diana Fleischman one a couple of weeks back that didn't seem to go down well here I thought was pretty good, even though I didn't really agree with much that she had to say.

I also liked Nicky Wire. I haven't really thought about the MSPs in a decade or so, but I always imagined he'd be quite a spiky person to deal with. But he seemed really lovely.

Feel I am wasting CaB space here, as I'm just echoing support for this! This is exactly how I felt about those 3 podcasts. Although, I fell asleep mid-the Diana Fleischman one, and when I returned a day or so later I got annoyed with her nonsense and skipped it.

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

I think, after so many years of being feted as a LOL LEGEND, Jeff Goldblum is now incapable of making any kind of public appearance without playing up to what's expected of him.

The real Jeff Goldblum probably is quite eccentric, that persona didn't emerge from nowhere, but he still strikes me as a canny brand-management pro who knows exactly what he's doing.

I suppose you could say the same of most eccentric cult heroes, it's all a performance to a certain extent, but I think the difference between someone like Goldblum and, say, Tom Baker, is that Tom Baker is an actual fruitcake who doesn't really seem to give much of a fuck. He's self-aware while being a law unto himself.

However, in Goldblum's defence, I don't think he sounded disinterested whenever Adam proffered some thoughts of his own. They triggered a few rare moments when Goldblum seemed to drop the act for a bit and responded in a naturally conversational way.

Blinder Data

Did anyone else notice a change in atmosphere in the Goldblum podcast when Buxton mentioned public shaming on Twitter?

Could be in relation to recent rumours. Maybe I'm being paranoid but perhaps it's not a coincidence that the PR person said something and then the interview got wrapped up soon after...

I can't listen to this podcast anymore when every episode has Adam timidly probing for an opportunity to complain about cancel culture etc.
It's so depressing seeing somebody you remember when they were young turn into an out of touch old man.

alan nagsworth

Well his most treasured artistic hero was a nonce so I guess you can see why he'd want to contest that stuff 😂🤣

Billy Connolly up now!

This is a great episode. Not heard Connolly do many interviews of this type, he seems to really be enjoying himself just chatting and Buxton asks some good follow-up questions.

There's one bit in the Goldblum one where Adam's talking about "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers" and Jeff sounds like the train is about to pull into the station.

It is understandable for minor celebrities to be worried about this though, given that they are at the sharp end of things. Even more so considering how much of a worrier he is in general and how much he tends to over-think things

He never says that people being called out on their shit is bad though, just that people can be quick to judge on Twitter and it can be easy to get in trouble with something innocuous, which is true. I am not sure what is out of touch about it really

Really enjoyable, that. Adam doesn't tend to tell us who he has in store, which makes sense as it's always such a nice surprise when guests such as Billy Connolly or Chris Morris turn up. Big comedy names!

I've heard variations on it before, but I particularly enjoyed his story about being picketed by religious zealots in the '70s. His brief journey from "Let's try to reason with these people" to "Ach, fuck 'em" was great.

I think that's entirely fair. It's not as if he's some bewildered middle-aged man shouting at clouds.

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

The funniest bit of the Connolly episode is at the very end, when he recalls how much he used to enjoy telling chat show hosts to ask next week's guest about their prowess on the harmonica: "He plays the blues like you've never heard before!" Really made me laugh.

Just listened to the one with the old yin and can confirm at our man Buckles didn't....I can confirm....DIDN'T....have a complete Chuxton.

No idea what that means.

It means he liked the interview with Billy Connolly. "Complete chuxton" was an improvised line from Joe on their XFM radio show when they were doing user-submitted rhymes for Robbie Williams' masterpiece 'Rudebox'. He flubbed the lines and had to rhyme something with "Buxton" on the cuff. From context, "made a complete chuxton" means to mess something up.

I'm sadly very happy you knew what I was talking about.

Yes he is. He's mentioned it being recorded, and it's out on Christmas Day as usual.

Johnboy

I'm no Manics fan but that Nicky Wire one was great - they covered loads and got on well.
