God I'd love a Glinner episode. An hour and a bit of Buxton awkwardly but definitely not talking about social media, cancel culture...

Nice weather isn't it, bit grey I suppose

Yes. You know what's not grey? The profile picture of this "beard" I totally owned on twitter - you see he quote-tweeted a follower of mine and tagged me in...

what

Adam talks with British journalist and author Caitlin Moran about sex, farts, dog snogs and genitals, however in amongst all that there is a serious section about eating disorders. The conversation was recorded remotely on September 2nd, 2020.

Thanks to Séamus Murphy-Mitchell for production support and to Matt Lamont for additional editing. Podcast artwork by Helen Green https://helengreenillustration.com/

oh

Séamus Murphy-Mitchell has been cleaning up Adam's audio files for a long time now huh

Puce Moment

Couldn't even listen to the opening silliness for fear he might talk about his kids, and then he announces her.

What sort of point are you trying to make here? Genuinely no idea.

What changed? In our house we had the Times at the weekend which she was seemingly always all over, and on a seemingly weekly basis, so I can barely remember not disliking her fatuous champagne socialism and middle-of-the-road social commentary.

Never read her stuff but I enjoyed listening to her on RHLSTP and she seemed alright, but I've been made more aware of her opinions and actions in the last few years.  Not as inclined to enjoy her stuff now.

Retinend

Out of curiosity, what are the opinions and actions you are referring to?

Pink Gregory

Just general hollow liberal centrism, I know it's like the default position in the media but I just tire of it a bit now.  I struggle with Adam himself sometimes, but he's just silly enough to make me love him.

I might yet listen to it.

thenoise

She appeared on the podcast before (ep 9), and came across well enough. Was she the one talking about the history of the internet and how it is going through its 'difficult adolescent period'? Thought that was a refreshingly optimistic take on the decline of western culture. I might be confusing her with someone else.

Can someone let me know why I should hate her please? Being centrist isn't quite good enough, I dont hate Buckles and he's as centrist as they get (I think?)

Yeah, when I attempted to listen to all the pods in chronological order, I thought she came across as a decent guest and quite funny. Not as interesting as Eno or anything, but amusing enough.

I find Moran's writing fairly insufferable along with everyone else - it's very hard to forgive her after watching the trailer for that recent biopic - but I have to concede that on both podcast appearances she has sounded like a perfectly interesting and wise person.

Mister Six

It may help that my sole experiences of her existence are that first Buxtonpod and the CaB thread where people are ripping the piss out of her for always pulling that same mouth-open face in every photo.

selectivememory

I did genuinely use to like her quite a lot. Though in the last decade or so I only really thought about her as another centrist hack on Twitter and haven't really paid her any mind. She wasn't too bad on this though, quite honestly. She's kind of annoying, I guess, but she gave Buckles plenty to work with and he seemed on good form.

I have to admit, I was expecting someone far worse from the reactions here. My mind did briefly go to Glinner, but I think Adam's too terrified of cancellation to risk it.

Pink Gregory

I'd like to think that Adam disapproves of Glinner's behaviour...

Oh, yeah, I think Adam is probably pretty good on that issue. But given they were friendly at one point (and may still be for all we know) I just imagined him having him on anyway, which even if he challenged him on his views, he'd probably still get a lot of stick for giving him a platform.

I don't genuinely think he'd have him on though. It was just a momentary thing when I saw everyone's reaction here to the latest guest.

It is the usual absurd OTT reaction Adam has been triggering here for a few months.

Hate to pile on, but on second glance this is a presumptuous comment. Or did you mean something other than "I reckon he would if he could get away with it"?

Ah, no. I was just thinking that even if he did want to have him on, he wouldn't do it. But no one in their right mind would go near Linehan right now. And to be clear, I don't think Adam shares his views. It was just a silly comment because for a split second I thought "could he?" and then dismissed the idea.

If the comment about cancellation seems unfair, it just sometimes seems like a bit of a preoccupation of his. Even in the latest episode he was talking about how he didn't want people to think he'd been kicked off Twitter after he deactivated his account. And I think he is kind of wary of putting his foot in it somehow, but that's just my reading of him.

Crabwalk

Didn't Adam mention recently that the one time that he tried writing with someone else (that wasn't Joe) it was a bad experience? I think it was the Holly Walsh episode. That had to be Glinner, right?

idunnosomename

wow when was that glinner pic taken? the chain reaction show aired 2014. he and Adam made a non-broadcast pilot for C4 2015. are graham went off the fucking rails in like 2017. there's no way he'll touch him with a bargepole now. although they do live in the same city, of course

Adam would never have Glinner on. Not least because he hates awkwardness and that conversation would be awkward with a capital fuckin' a

I'd even love it if they just skirted around the whole issue. Just talk about comedy and living in Norfolk. Maybe they could touch upon a shared dislike of twitter and then change the subject quickly.

Come on Buckles what's the worst that could happen?

TommyTurnips

I remember a while back seeing a video of Adam interviewing Graham as Ken Korda circa IT crowd. It may have been recorded as a dvd extra for the series. Anyway, it has Ken Korda giving Graham praise and credit for not only Father Ted but also "My Hero" just because it also starred Ardal O'Hanlon. Saying things like "the talking baby was brilliant, how did you come up with that?".

I tried to find it a while back but I couldn't. Maybe it got scrubbed from the Internet. Maybe someone else has seen it and knows what I mean.

Edit, found it. https://youtu.be/oslsCZTOXHo
