the bbc could not make a dunkirk program in the same way as Band of Brothers. To understand the drama and importance of the dunkirk retreat we need to see what was going in government as well as on the ground. So if the BBC had focussed on the personnal experiences of the soldiers on the beaches, we would would have missed out on all the lord halifax-churchill stuff. Where the Band of Brothers had it easy was that the makers could soley tell the story of lowly soldiers in france because by then the decisions of prime ministers and presidents were less important.
