Didn't they fall out? In any case, Consolevania is still one of my favourite comedy shows and possibly the best video game's show ever made. Here's hoping this is as wierd and wonderful as it ever was.

Phil_A

They definitely had a falling out, although the details are a bit sketchy. Ryan went off and did his own show, Chuckie Dregs, that was basically Consolevania in all but name. Rab was also planning to revive Consolevania on his own a few years ago but it got put off due to some undisclosed personal stuff.

Glad to see they're both in this. It was a bit weird when Rab started doing Burnistoun with that guy that looks exactly like Ryan, but with hair.

brat-sampson

I never really watched the original show, but parts of Consolevania are still burned into my brain. Definitely up for this.

It was really nice to see them back together.

Many years in the making. Have respect for taking your time.

I missed videogaiden first time round, but like Chuckie Dregs a lot, although that's become more about the other contributors, so I hope that continues.

Beagle 2

Aw, nice one! Unexpected and welcome news.

The ending of the recent Christmas one was a bit weird, as it works as either a daft gag or an actual ending.  Maybe they just don't know if it'll carry on at this point.

This thing here is very unexpected, but is entirely banging news.  Even if it's dreadful, doesn't matter.

Would have preferred the return of Consolevania to be honest. I doubt you'll get porn episodes on the BBC or footage of bootleg African films[nb]Let alone stuff like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDv-ZkOD8Y4[/nb]. I just hope Rab remembers how to be funny because he's been worringly po faced and "socially aware" the past couple years and even during Videogaiden his wank hat reviews could be bloody boring.

Rev

The first episode is tomorrow apparently, and I'm guessing it'll be an iPlayer exclusive kind of deal, as there's been no mention of where you can watch the bugger.  At least they've kept the level of promotion authentic to the original series.

It's only a couple of weeks short of a full decade since I first watched Consolevania.

Fucking hell.

Rev

It's been 8 years (or 7 if you want to split hairs) since the final episode.  That can't be at all right, I remember the ever-extended journey towards episode 2.Late like it was a yesterday full of overcast Wednesdays.

Fucking hell indeed.

Me too. VG always felt watered down in comparison. I'm still glad to see it back though and I have a feeling that VG might be more likely to recapture its former glory than CV after the better part of a decade (fucking hell). Plus it warms the cockles to see that they've patched things up.

It's out:

I'm happy to see it's nearly 20 minutes long, I was expecting it to be around 10.

Great little article about it here - http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2016/mar/03/videogaiden-return-video-gaming-tv-rab-florence-ryan-macleod-scotland?CMP=twt_gu
Loved the mention of 4Later as an influence and late night Channel 4 in general as it's something I grew up watching a lot of too.

Liked the first episode a lot. Clearly a lot of time has passed and this reflected that, their two older more cynical selves passing comment from a window. The reviews are still some of the best out there, Rab and Ryan have always been on another level at this. It's even more refreshing now when you've got the choice of excitable youtube pricks or Totalfuckingbiscuit's pompous bellowing.

Rev

There's a definite sense of trying to distance itself from the shouty Youtube types, isn't there?  There's a nice calmness to the whole thing.

It's far more of a straight review show than I expected (or hoped for, to be accurate), though.  Very focused, with minimal titting about.  This is neither a good or bad thing, but it's a thing.

brat-sampson

What's it doing on Youtube though? I'd assumed it'd at least be on the BBC site, albeit the BBC3 spin-off one or some other satellite thing.

Oh well, good to have it either way.

Rev

Not a clue.  If you search for videogaiden on iPlayer it does come up with the rather vibrant new version of the logo and NOT AVAILABLE, which I'm assuming is a placeholder for the TV special at the end of the run.

Again, though, it's totally in keeping with the traditional style.  Once, it was the issue of whether it should be confined to BBC Scotland or made available to all regions, now it's whether the BBC can be arsed to put it on their dedicated online platform or even mention the fucker at all.

Good Game is a hugely successful weekly show about Video Games that airs on the ABC here. I feel they were ahead of the curve putting their stuff up on YouTube as well as our iPlayer equivalent.

In fact I think it works well enough that they now create daily simple shows just for online on top of the other stuff. As well as offering full episodes as well as stuff cut into chunks.

As a cool g8mr boi I'm too busy going awping short and checking my cps in SC to watch actual television, so I much prefer it being on youTube so I can skip to what I wanna see before going back to my fave mine craft lps

Second episode:

I like that they're trapped, it's a nice little continuation from the later episodes of Consolevania.

Claude the Racecar Driving Rockstar Super Sleuth

I take back what I said above. This is just as odd as CV ever was. Shame they can't play any '80s jangle pop.

Rev

Now available on iPlayer!  But only the first episode so far.  I really don't get the BBC at times.

This new series is excellent but they've all only got like 5000 views on YouTube which is the more accessible and simple place to view them worldwide.
This needs some actual promotion, explaining clearly that this is a TV Show currently airing and you can watch it right now on YouTube.

Some big game sites need to feature it properly.

It wouldn't cost much to make in the long run but still I'd like it to be renewed.

Thursday

The views seem to follow a similar pattern to the average Videogamer/RPS/Cool Ghosts video. I guess there's a real limit on the audience of people interested in the genre of "smarter, funnier, more grown-up youtube videos about games"

I know it's the obvious old man thing to say, but it's difficult to understand in a world where twats unboxing things gets a hundred million views. I mean sure there's going to be generational shifts, but it's bizarre.

To be fair, there's a bit of wit that goes into those unboxing videos compared to your general Videogamer video.

Being ironic are they:  "I'm not actually unboxing this, despite how it appears."  A Schrödinger unboxing.

There are actually videos out there of people unwrapping and then opening hundreds upon hundreds of Kinder (and other brand) eggs, one after the other, relentlessly.  The toy is held to the camera in bizarrely detailed fashion, then is cast aside forever.  Next egg appears:  wrapper off, egg destroyed, toy out.  Again and again.

It's actual hell.  And people live in it.

Finished the 5 episodes. The next and last ones a longer special being broadcast on television as far as I'm aware. I loved this series.

It was consistent, aware, brief and made an impact. So much more consistent than the old ones. Not a real dud part. The 4th episode was my favourite. The weirdness of the existential throughline in the purgatory area as well as the discussion of That Dragon, Cancer.

Brilliant stuff.

Rev

There's one more online one on Thursday, then the TV jobber a week later.

Aye, Brooker gave it a Twitter push, but getting him or Limmy to make a guest appearance might be a good idea for a series 2 (4?).

That said, it's doing well for BBC Scotland's YouTube channel - Episode 1 is their fourth most viewed video, and the others are all on the first page, against stuff that's been up for a year or more.  And hopefully that drop of numbers is due to folk like me preferring to watch it on iPlayer for whatever reason.  I reckon it's probably doing alright by BBC Scotland's metrics.
