QuoteBack in August, word came that a return trip to 1870s South Dakota was in the cards for the cast and crew of HBO's unfairly-cancelled cult western series Deadwood. Now HBO programming president Michael Lombardo has confirmed to TVLine that series creator David Milch is all set for a Deadwood movie to hopefully wrap up all the loose ends.

"David has our commitment that we are going to do it," says Lombardo. "He pitched what he thought generally the storyline would be — and knowing David, that could change. But it's going to happen. The understanding is that when he is done with [his current project] he will turn his attention to [writing the] script for the 'Deadwood' film."

Once the cable network cancelled the show after a mere three 12-episode seasons, Milch's original plan was to make two Deadwood movies and create a proper ending for the rivalry between Sheriff Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) and foul-mouthed pimp Al Swearengen (Ian McShane). Now it seems the only thing potentially standing in the way is Milch trying to corral all those busy actors back in the saddle.

"I'm going to leave that in David's hands," Lombardo saiad. "He's confident he will be able to. The cast is unbelievably [tight]. Some casts and creators form a bond that becomes relevant for the rest of their lives. This was a defining moment for a lot of them."

Other cast members who may return for the Deadwood movie include Molly Parker, Jim Beaver, W. Earl Brown, Dayton Callie, Kim Dickens, Dora DuFran, Brad Dourif, Anna Gunn, John Hawkes and Jeffrey Jones.

Seems like the perfect time to finally get round to that rewatch!

To warm up your Western cockles once more, Matt Gourley's chat with Paula Malcolmson and Sarah Lund about their experiences on the set is riveting - http://iwastheretoo.wolfpop.com/audio/25673/deadwood-with-paula-malcomson-and-sarah-lund

I have a feeling the film could be marvellous, but also bittersweet because of how we may only be back in that world for about 2 hours, after waiting 10 years. Any time back in this world is good of course, but I know I will want more either way.

I think I may get on that re-watch right about now.

Wanking at mere thought..

Big Robin Weigert wanks `n all.

Btw everyone watch Mississippi Grind, a Midnight Cowboy/California Split-esque film with Weigert in it.

God that episode was brilliant. Ive been hoping someone on an earwolf podcast would notice what Paula wrote on the table at some point. Also loved Stephen Tobolowsky's story about Powers Boothe delivering his lines to a horse.

How would Jim Beaver make a return?

Unless they set it before the death which is unlikely, flashback?

Claude the Racecar Driving Rockstar Super Sleuth

I suppose they did have Garrett Dillahunt play two characters.

I suspect that the names listed were taken by the hack off Wikipedia. As that article says, HBO has giving the greenlight to Milch to write a screenplay but is finishing another project first. At this stage, they're going to be vague about details.

From what Molly Parker has said previously, I think it might be a hard job getting her back and other cast members have sounded dubious about doing a continuation that falls short of the series.

Sal Vicuso

I thought these might be of interest - I visited Deadwood a few months ago and took a few snaps. Rough old place, still got a very wild side to it.

Seth Bullock and Sol Starr's hotel

View of Deadwood from Boot Hill

Bust of Hickock on his grave

Saloon where Hicock was gunned down

Calamity Jane's grave, next to Hickock

Site of Swearengen's old Gem

I took the Boot Hill tour - didn't climb all the way up to see Bullock's grave. The tour guide told us that, amusingly, Hickock had very little time for Calamity Jane and found her an annoying loudmouthed drunk by most accounts. But he died first and Jane, who was nuts for him, insisted on being buried next to him, something he would probably have loathed

Drunks always sleep where they're not wanted.

Fucking brilliant news, never thought this would happen.

They should call it Red Deadwood Redemption.

I'm going to rewatch the entire thing before the film. I'm so excited for this, please don't be shit.

I'm doing this right now (at season 2) whilst simultaneously re-watching Justified and most of the DW cast make appearances.

I'd forgotten how good Powers Boothe was in DW. A monolithic face of evil.

nedthemumbler

Watching the series for the first time.

Hugely enjoy it but Olyphants shitness stops me from ranking it with sublime series like the Wire or Breaking Bad.  Can't really explain why, I just don't connect to him as an actor or human.

Sebastian Cobb

Keep going, it becomes a lot less about him as it goes on. There's loads of characters and stories in there.

Z

I wonder if Olyphant is better in this after seeing Justified?

Mister Six

Olyphant is fantastic in Justified and The Santa Clarita Diet. He's a bit more one-note in Deadwood, but that's the character, and I still think he's a compelling presence.

Dex Sawash

I thought Olyphant was excellent as unwilling stick up his as man in deadwood

magval

This is awful cheap on Blu-Ray (a tenner for the whole run!) but I remember there were problems mentioned when it was first released.

Anyone here watched the UK Blu-Ray who can confirm it's not shit?

amputeeporn

Does anyone else worry that a two hour film feels a little light?

We're in the age of the 'events' series, and it just seems a little stingey - but also not to suit the original show's deliberate pace. Obviously we know nothing until we see it but I'd rather this was a burning story that Milch just had to tell/had already written, rather than it just being the last possible thing that hasn't been rebooted or continued.

Ooh. I bought the first 2 series on dvd but lent them to a mate so would happily spring a tenner for a hd version.

Looks like it's on now tv if you have that as well.

Might just ponce it though.

Teaser trailer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAcftIUE6MQ

Release date is May 31st.

For some reason, the brief shot of Hearst felt like the moment when the reality of this film finally sank in for me. It feels a little surreal that this story is actually going to have another chapter.

rasta-spouse

There's a video on yt with Milch giving a talk and he goes on to the subject of Deadwood's cancellation: "cancelled all because some cocksucker....." and he trails off. What I would give to hear the end of that sentence.

Anyway, interesting trailer. I notice Bullock's gone grey...what period in relation to the tv show is this set?

The film is set in 1889, the year North and South Dakota were granted statehood. The events of the series concluded in 1877 so the time difference is roughly in line with real life.

rasta-spouse

So the movie isn't a condensed fourth season wrap up? Good to know.

The relationship between Bullock and Al was brilliant and complex in the tv show. Just from the trailer, I hope they don't buddy-up too obviously. Also, never sure what to make of Milch (Deadwood was super obs) but John From Cincinnati was bonkers, and only seen a bit of his horse racing show. He's on Favreau's Dinner for Five and he talks about how SKY UK lapped up Deadwood because "they think the show hates America".
