I've watched the entirety of this video twice in the last twenty four hours https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3IMdOguZaU

The 3D Great Gatsby joke might be my favourite.

hey guys, my memoir BASED ON A TRUE STORY, coming in Sept, can be pre-ordered here: http://bit.ly/normbook

up_the_hampipe

Don't be fooled. Norm didn't write that. There was a ghostwriter. And who was that ghostwriter? You guessed it, Frank Stallone!

I don't know whether to pre-order the book or the audiobook. I want to hear Norm, but I also like to read. True dilemma.

veletision

I'm going to be in LA the day it comes out. Hoping he's doing a signing or something.

Dr Rock

Massive four and a half hour compilation over here. Much is familiar, but had never heard him doing the Godfather scene as Super Dave Osborne though...

edit - I see his Super Dave Osborne impression has already been linked to in this thread.

Over the last couple of months, listening to Norm at night has been a life-healing balm for me. It's difficult to describe why I enjoy him, as I'm sure that, in anybody else's hands, this is not the kind of material I'd keel over in fits of laughter from. There's a kind of irrepressible magic in his delivery, with that impish charm and that grasp he has of his own preposterousness, which all seems to counteract the boredom I would feel if the same material were delivered by a regular 'shock' comedian, or someone who touts themselves as an enemy of political correctness.

It feels like I'm dancing around what truly makes him a great comedian, not digging into the substance of it, but, really, I felt compelled to express something of my love and admiration for him. As strange as it may sound, I think he's made me feel better about life, and listening to him has taken me back to those times (between the ages of 14 and 16) when I was first discovering comedians like Chris Morris, Spike Milligan, Monty Python, and Peter Cook. He's made me want to discover new comedy again.

Jobey

Yeah norms one of the best ever.

Heard this memoir isn't shit and there is an audiobook.

On one of those compilations on YouTube, Norm is chatting to some bubbly boring presenters and puts the fear of God into them something shocking. Talking about how life is pointless, material success is a frippery, sex is just a distraction from our fundamental alienation and our encroaching death. But with jokes, like. Genuinely one of the most transgressive bits I've ever seen given the context - the female presenter was completely horrified and sincerely encouraging him to seek medical advice. It was GREAT.

hedgehog90

I've probably seen it, but could you provide a link and timecode?

AllisonSays

I'll try to find it on Saturday when I'm not in work mate x

This is a profile of Norm Macdonald. There's a neat little feature on the side where you can read transcripts of the writer's text conversations with Norm, which provides small little pangs of joy and jealousy as you wish to yourself that you were lucky enough to receive text messages from the great man Macdonald.

This is fascinating. Thank you for this. I love that he texted "Where did you go?" when he didn't reply for a while. I wish I had the balls to do that. Also that overcoat story is powerful.

It's awful that I have to wait for over a month to read his book.

Woah, Norm casually texts Gogol stories on a Friday night?  One of a kind.  That adds a whole new dimension to the moth joke.  He basically made up a new Gogol story and added the one thing the others were missing, a punchline.

hedgehog90

Excellent piece, thanks for sharing it kitsofan!
I can't wait until the book comes out, if only so I can listen to some new interviews with Norm (assuming he's out promoting it).

up_the_hampipe

Apparently Louis CK wrote the foreword for Norm's book:

Not sure if they are good friends or if Norm just wanted to get a big name to help it sell.

EDIT: Perhaps Louis did it because his daughter loves Norm

just wondered if you'd managed to find it?

AllisonSays

I had a quick look but couldn't, sorry. It's part of the way through one of the many compilations online, which makes it kind of hard to look up. I'll post it on here when I come across it again.

edit - don't think it is actually. that's funny too though

Here we go! The first 22 minutes of this. The two hosts are remarkably awful but that makes Norm's sangfroid and like, bleak existential attitude, even more striking. "To tell you the truth I find sex to be a very filthy act..." "What happened to you??" "Well, I came to the realisation we're all plunging headlong into death..."

veletision

The podcast is definitely coming back soon now that the book is finished:

Here's a thread with some more details:

Excellent! Conan said yes. That should be great. Trying to book Letterman apparently. Not sure how that will go, but the Washington Post writer did manage to get an interview with him for Norm's profile.

Oh god, just saw a Twitter pic with Margaret Cho as the guest. Might skip that one.

hedgehog90

SO happy to hear the show's back!!!
Hampipe, did you ever consider most of the guests are pretty lame? I mean, no offense to them, I've been pleasantly surprised by many of them, but about half of them are people I have little/no interest, or actively dislike.
I sat through an hour long episode with Billy Bob Thornton and enjoyed it for fucks sake. It was that episode where Norm mumbles that wonderful line about how Jeffrey Dahmer was broomstick raped to death...[nb]They say it's one of the worst ways to go.[/nb]

I think Margeret is pretty insufferable myself, but cho'll be alright.

up_the_hampipe

What's your beef with Billy Bob? He gets a lifetime pass for Bad Santa and Fargo alone. He was a pleasant enough guest.

For the most part, they aren't people I'm a fan of, but Cho is intolerable. I doubt I could listen to her. And you just know the bits Norm does will go right over her comedically challenged head.

hedgehog90

Billy Bob just seems like a prat in the few interviews I've seen, particularly his magnum opus trainwreck appearance when he was promoting his shit band.
I don't know, it's probably irrational but I just don't like the man.

On the reddit thingy someone suggested Chris Elliott should be a guest. That would be wonderful.

Interesting how Kellison mentioned that Bill Maher won't do it at all. Didn't Norm call him the least funny person on television or something like that? It wouldn't have been a good interview anyway. Maher is very easily outclassed by anyone who is more quick-witted than him, and gets sanctimonious at the drop of a hat.

Really excited at the idea of the podcast coming back. The long absence of the show induced me to watch the episodes again and again, and discover the glorious throwaway lines, riffs and asides that I'd missed.

Sin Agog

Some good suggestions on that thread, but the vast majority of them are far too self-assured and Buddha-like for Norm to throw off-kilter with casual allusions to the holocaust and 9/11.  The reason why the Todd Glass eps were my favourite was because Glass was all sorts of bewildered by the end of it, and we got to see him get dismantled in forensic detail, like the audience in the ampitheatre of a medieval surgery.  That's why the best suggestion I saw in that whole reddit thread was most definitely Rich Vos.

Sin Agog

Dunno if he was taking the piss or not, but the last tweet Norm made was about watching Life on the Road with some up-and-comer called Richard Gervais.  Not seen his stuff, but maybe Normy could give him some sage showbiz advice on the podcast?

up_the_hampipe

Norm's older brother Neil wrote a piece about Norm's book
http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/norm-macdonald-book-1.3740268

Also includes this pic of Norm as a child (on the left, of course). What a top shelf cutie:
