Dear Tony Slattery, I've got to get something off my chest....

It's impossible to read anything from Fry because he had the luvviness turned up to 393,605. "Darling! I would part oceans for you! You must visit! No, you must climb into my very skin! I will slice open my intestines and you can snuggle up in them for warmth, such is my devotion to you."

Cunt'll never call.

I was a bit resistant to watching it - more because of my 'woe is me, look at me' first impression rather than the more compassionate sentiments that have been expressed.  But it was very good.  Clearly a gentle decent man who has been completely overwhelmed by the nuttiness of life and I think we can all see bits of ourselves there.  I'm oddly hopeful for him now.

Also: I want his cat.

Interesting documentary.

I get the feeling that Tony isn't going to stop drinking, but I hope I'm wrong.

I think you're right, unfortunately.  It doesn't seem like he even wants to quit.

His pupils were unnervingly large all the way through the documentary.
If that was a big bottle of liquid acid he was swigging on, that's what I call a drinking problem!
Is it a side effect of the seizure he had?

Oh, he'll stop drinking, right enough, when he dies prematurely due entirely to alcohol- related reasons.
He could do with a few more people saying " You've got to give up the booze completely, you daft cunt ( but not cold turkey, you'll have to wean yourself off it gradually over the next few months, unless you fancy another seizure)", and less people simpering " Maybe if you cut down a little bit, hmmmm?"
He'd also look like less of a Jakey if he went for the clean- shaven look.

Elderly Sumo Prophecy

Does he exclusively wear "interesting" shirts nowadays?

When you are that deep into alcoholism it's probably hard to know what you want and what your body wants. It's just a fucking tragedy that they'll/he'll probably never even begin to unravel the addiction from the illness and see what they're left with. Fully expect to read that he's dead within 5 years. Chronic alcoholics rarely make it far into their sixties

An interesting but thoroughly saddening watch. I watched the first half last night but couldn't get through it all in one sitting. Even when he was in a stable mood, his dull, deadened stare of the perma-pissed was heartbreaking to see, especially when compared to the fizzing energy he used to brim with.

Turned it off when he checked whether the little cupboard in the waiting room was a mini bar as I wasn't sure he was joking but I'd have to guess he mostly wasn't. Poor sod.

Danger Man

Unless I missed it I thought it was odd that they asked him how much cocaine he was taking but they didn't ask him how much he drinks.

But, as always, it's a bit tricky to do a show on drug addiction where the drug is perfectly legal and most people use it.

Urgh, I hate this sort of thing.  I've lost count of the number of times people who drink regularly (including in one case, a full on raging alcoholic) have scathingly shouted at me "you're a fucking druggie" because I smoke weed occasionally (I've literally had this shouted at me by people who are steaming drunk at the time).  Most people don't consider alcohol to be a drug, simply by virtue of it being legal and socially accepted en masse.  Hypocritical idiots, the lot of them.

shiftwork2

Lovely alcohol, the weirdest and most potentially destructive drug of them all and it's available from the 24h garage whenever you want.  In fact it's taboo not to take it.  You don't steep your cells in poisonous ethanol and feel like shit in the morning?  Ah you're a weirdo.

If it were a new thing it wouldn't see the light of day.

Indeed.  On the whole and in most cases (basically for anyone who's not schizophrenic); alcohol is a far worse and vastly more damaging drug to take than cannabis (and I say that as someone who does both).  That won't stop the judgmental pricks from looking down on a fella for enjoying a joint though.  Fucking hate them.  Self-righteous, hypocritical, ill-informed, judgemental morons.  "Ah no, my vice is acceptable. Yours is not".  Get t' fuck, you ignoramus anus.

Lisa Jesusandmarychain

People say alcohol's a drug; it's not a drug, it's a drink.

Just completed my 8th alcohol- free week without any seizures or brain damage or owt too, so that's nice.

shiftwork2

Yeah we'd noticed it'd had gone quiet ;)

Nice one Lisa.

Yeah, Fry comes across as a real cunt the more I see of him.

I don't think he's a cunt, I just think his head is up his own arse and he's lost perspective.

maybe it's the twitter effect, it can turn people into the a exaggerated version of themselves, going the way of their strongest personality trait.

I felt concerned about the light touch this documentary had, Tony visits three specialists each doling out a nugget of their expertise then is it followed up with anything? I saw in the credits there were two psychiatrists working with the show behind the scenes but after his visit with the childhood abuse specialist and what happened in that meeting I noticed Tony's worsened mood and he couldn't bring himself to do his e diary.  With an experience such as his childhood one and the mental effects I think of it as having a stab wound with the knife still in there, once the knife is pulled out you're left with this terrible injury with blood gushing out and the people round you going 'oh that's not very nice, sorry about that' without providing any proper care to address the injury.

ANYWAY I'm sure that he has help love and support and access to what he needs.

Not a fan, but I thought his marriage would last as long as it took me to read that he was married.

He's proved me well wrong there.

I think people reinforcing a personality that you then amplify more and more in a big feedback loop is exactly it. I only need to think back to Fry and Laurie to know that he's not actually a man of tod.

I thought that too, and also how dispiriting this all is for people who can't go to see the leading experts in their field.

I know what you mean but at least one of them played bad cop for a bit. It's your choice and only you can do this might seem a bit obvious for most people but for the likes of a self-pitying drunk it can be a wake up call.

The vast majority of alcoholics didn't get bummed when they were 8 years old so Tony has a few more layers to go before understanding why he drinks so much.

The woman psychiatrist had an unbearably smug face. I know her facial expression is unrelated to the value of her insights but if I were Slattery it would definitely be a case of bring me the next shrink. Her insight about quitting coke showing his potential to stop addictive things seemed transparently spinny. My completely uninformed take on his comment that 'nobody has put it like that before' was that it was lipservice. Nobody had put it like that before because everyone close enough to talk to him about this knows he traded it straight for a crippling alcohol addiction. It also assumed that 'I didn't know what was in it' was a health decision based on rational observation rather than a stranger part of the psychosis he was suffering caused by the cocaine. I think there was (edit: as much) some bullshit from Slattery in the show as well as genuine openness. He may be a lovely fellow without a malevolent bone in his body as fry put it, but he is a chronic alcoholic and sadly the condition produces chronic bluffers too.

Agree with that. I think he's found a story that allows him to continue drinking. At the same time, I suppose I see it as none of my business if he wants to be drunk every day. I've seen people in much worse states than he appears to be in.

I agree with Lisa- lovely shirts. I wonder where he gets them.

A backhanded compliment, if I ever saw one.  Duplicitous, Sir.
