Good SNL sketches

Saturday Night Live has been going for over 40 years. As some of you may have discovered, sitting through an entire episode can be quite painful. But with some of 'Merica's best comedy writers and performers drifting through over the years, there have been some gems. So let's share some of those.

I would offer up Will Ferrell as Mr. Tarkanian the psycho boss.

Also Puppet Class, which is one of Bill Hader's best performances. Howard Stern called this his favourite SNL sketch.

This year also gave us a rare slice of brilliance in the Farewell Mr. Bunting sketch. The pre-recorded stuff often works better anyway.

There's a few others out there. Celebrity Jeopardy always seems to be worth a few laughs. Chevy Chase/Richard Pryor's word association sketch probably goes without saying.

Black_Bart

The one with Joe Pesci and Chris Rock doing the Blind date thing.

Swoz_MK

Even though its just a boy saying "bitch" at the end of every line, 'Riley' tickles me somewhat - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B49tqzWyutw

I always thought Dana Carvey as John McLaughlin was a tour de force.

Dr Rock

They're never on YouTube are they?

This one is, via some copyright avoiding titling, Happy Fun Ball.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8zOtZlO52k

Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer, also featuring Phil Hartman, was from this period.

Will Ferrell as Robert Goulet was a very important stoner sketch for us as youths.

"Looky here - it's a bighorn!"

"Who let the dogs out?!
Who let the dogs out?
Who let those li'l mutts goooooo?"

I realised the other day that Scott Walker sounds exactly like him.

Yes, I do enjoy that one. The use of the N-word so freely was quite surprising to me at first.

Black_Bart

NOt SNL per se, but let's remember All You Need Is Cash.

It's a great example of a hilarious sketch that must have looked shit on paper. There's barely a "joke" in there.

hard rocx and mettals

I've only watched seasons 29-41, so here are some more recently-skewed picks:

- Do it on my Twin Bed, a song featuring all the girls which was Emmy-nominated: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-QG-rFf4po
- Zach Galifianakis is always a reliable host. This two-parter was a normal sketch at first, but was hurriedly edited into a video shown later in the night. Just watch:
Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibty_8nV9-0
Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpWRMN_VZgA
- This hilarious absurdist sketch from a Louis CK-fronted ep. "shhhh...ut up." still crack up at it every time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYdXpNO2c5U

BONUS sketches which may particularly appeal to CaB:

- British Movie Trailer Parody (ft. Russell Brand): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6p0W4ZsLXw
- British Working Class Drama (ft. Daniel Craig): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_Ve4UP_ELM
- Jason Sudeikis' Gervais impression is passable, but he has the laugh down well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5Eq5NdQmV8

Malcy

It's not something i've watched much of but i enjoyed the recent Larry David stuff.

Bern Your Enthusiasm - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nn4tP7ogWIA

Monologue - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuGrIdZQ7Xc

Sanders/ Elaine Seinfeld - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1STLFY02N5M

Totinos - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dzOLoOEToc

Also remember downloading loads of the Celebrity Jeopardy sketches years and years ago. Always a laugh. Winona Ryder as Bjork, Ben Stiller as Tom Cruise and of course Sean Connery always stood out for me.

It's surprising how risque some of the sketches were in that era (pre-FCC clampdown).
There was less caution about language, there were sketches based around the cleavage of Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears. I was a different time.

Pretty much everything is up on the YT channel. Everything but Will Ferrell's Neil Diamond. I guess there's some cease and desist thing

One of my favourites. CALCULATOR

Oh aye. Hermione's Growth Spurt? Lindsay Lohan was 17 during this, I think. Also it's presumably a reference to Emma Watson (although it could be argued as an innocent sketch about puberty and awkward teens, but come on who are we kidding here) and she would have been about 14 at the time. Bit dodgy innit.

Kate McKinnon, hot damn.

Don't sleep on Cecily. She's bringing it too.

I always thought Dana Carvey as John McLaughlin was a tour de force.

The Dec. 1990 McLaughlin Group sketch is my all-time favorite from SNL: http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/mclaughlin-group/n9987 (Apologies if the link doesn't play in the UK--apparently the sketches is on youtube but blocked in the US!).
"The Sinatra Group" is also magnificent, and showcases one of Phil Hartman's best impersonations: http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/the-sinatra-group/n10008
But Hartman's most demonically precise impersonation is probably "Ronald Reagan, Mastermind," which remains the best comedic stab at the Gipper:
http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/president-reagan-mastermind/n9509
And while it isn't a great sketch, "Trump Divorce" shows that Hartman could do Trump just as well: http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/trump-divorce-cold-opening/n9870

Well, there's a combination of words I never expected to see typed out by a human being.

Aaand there's another one, back-to-back; well done guys.

Also, that puppet thing from the OP was new to me, and fucking incredible to boot. Once again I have no karma to give, but thank you so much Mr up_the_hampipe, if that is indeed your real name.

Shit Good Nose

I haven't seen any SNL since the Chris Farley/David Spade era and, unlike most people, I can't stand Will Ferrell.  So trying to remember any decent ones is incredibly difficult.  Chevy's pratfalls?

How about the very worst one of all, mainly because it SHOULD be amazing - the Walken family reunion.

WhoMe

I do like Jonah Hill in this one. Brink of suicide/murder spree vibes at the dinner table.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzaIlHybawg

DrGreggles

I've tried with SNL, but I just don't find it funny. Any of it.
My girlfriend thinks it's hilarious though. Bloody Yanks...

Cuellar

p.s. why do they call a single bed a twin bed

Rizla

Not a sketch but essential viewing nonetheless - Phil Hartman on Letterman

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VV3CjIWeVBo

Gulftastic

I like the recurring 'Former porn stars' sketch with Cecily Strong and Vanessa Brayer. I think the two ladies are marvelous.  Cecily in particular.

up_the_hampipe

I don't know how I managed to forget Mark Wahlberg talks to animals. One of my favourites.

"Andy's Dad" digital short https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvUHatIyKR4

Such a simple and immature idea, but it tickles me.

SavageHedgehog

I like this one a lot. Progressively increases its absurdity, rather than hitting the same note repeatedly, even though it's literally about someone repeating the same word over and over again
Sassy's Sassiest Boys

mook

quite a long sketch this one, but stick with it to the end.
