Sassy's Sassiest Boys

That's a brilliant Andrew McCarthy impression. It basically boils down his one acting style into a single expression.

I do like Jonah Hill in this one. Brink of suicide/murder spree vibes at the dinner table.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzaIlHybawg

I'd unfairly dismissed Jonah Hill because he always seems to be the face of stuff I don't like the look of, but he is great here.

Phil Hartman was fucking brilliant.

Ugh, why is Samberg so flat in these things? I know he's the straight-man but come on...

Actually I don't really rate Galifinakis all that much either.

Ah, I love Galifianakis, at least as a stand-up. His film choices haven't been so great though. His first SNL monologue is one of my favourites https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lalluBy-QfI

He was the funniest thing in the Comedians of Comedy movie too.
Between Two Ferns is sporadically amusing, or it used to be at least. His deadpan was at its best for the one with Charlize Theron https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83I_rQUbw8c

EDIT But it's an SNL thread so here's Bill Hader's Donald Duck Vietnam nightmare https://youtu.be/NkdlM_vO3I8?t=2m20s

up_the_hampipe

The only Between Two Ferns episodes I didn't like were the awkward ones with Obama and Clinton. Those were obvious bad decisions. I think there's some gold in pretty much all of the others though.

I like that he's continued the Hoobastank gag to all his hosting gigs

Bazooka

SNL is now making the bloody national news because Trump disproves with the recent sketch. I actually fully agree with him, its rubbish as is the case with all late night satire in the US.

McChesney Duntz

Uh-huh.  Just curious - who do you consider the standard bearer(s) of satire (late-night or otherwise) right now?

Just to be perfectly clear, anybody who cares about actual comedy in the States is firm in the understanding that Jimmy Fallon sucks rubber donkey lungs.

I'm aware. He's their James Corden. And now they've got Corden too.

McChesney Duntz

Yes, we do.  You're welcome.  As Stewart Lee said, "England's loss is America's loss as well."

Kanish.

I don't know why I love it so much. Bill Hader's 70s cop voice, catchy theme tune and a fake production company logo always get me. It didn't even make it to air.

up_the_hampipe

That's funny. Shame the audience weren't giving it much.

Speaking of old timey voices, Kate McKinnon and JK Simmons are brilliant in the Casablanca sketch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQKVIJnfiNM McKinnon is so good she can make just saying "no" funny.

That's frustratingly close to being really good. Bill Hader seems to have a really ear/eye for pastiche, but I've yet to see him in anything truly great. That mockumentary thing he did with the other dude from SNL looked really promising but just didn't have the laughs.

Since cultural over-generalities are on my mind today, this trailer parody from a few years ago popped into my re ro.  (Warming: contains trace elements of Russell Brand.)

The more I watch it the more that crap monkey joke brings it down. I do love fake production company logos though. I don't remember much about the American Office: An American Office Space but Michael's video ending in GREAT SCOTT! always tickles me.

Reese De'what's bad guesses.

I liked the old early days of Netflix in the UK when they had those edited episodes.

Recurring sketch time!

Get in the Cage: Liam Neeson - https://youtu.be/XRFLvGC9wg4

Despite my dislike for Fallon I always liked the Barry Gibb Talk Show sketches https://youtu.be/6_Ea5a19jTc

Also I wanted to see the original episode that featured I'm On A Boat so I downloaded it and the host was Bradley Cooper BEFORE The Hangover. It's not even mentioned. There's a joke that Drew Barrymore didn't want to do the episode and it seems true as no one knows who he is.

Finally, Emma Stone (Next host) - Bridal Shower Gifts. https://youtu.be/hGZWUzD1res

Ok, they were shit. EDIT TO ADD.

I didn't see this episode of The OC. https://youtu.be/vmd1qMN5Yo0

The Rock WWE Promo. https://youtu.be/H_yWxB9VW0c

The Rock does an impression of me. https://youtu.be/Cvn0F0LEVNE

I mentioned that one in the OP. A true classic.

Jim Carrey being a lunatic (as usual) in the Black Swan sketch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwby0YmAXVc I know Carrey isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I think he can be a hilarious physical actor.

Ah bollocks. I was checking links rather than text. But yes, there it is.

My friend showed me this not long ago. "Country Roses". Apparently this was cut out of subsequent broadcasts. https://vimeo.com/110838252

Weird Kristen Wiig guest-hosting, and for the second time! Sketches were the usual mix of half-baked with some genuine laughs in there... I liked Wiig's performance in this sketch.

"Mama... mama, I picked all the grapes!"

Uh-huh.  Just curious - who do you consider the standard bearer(s) of satire (late-night or otherwise) right now?
On the late night scene, although Seth Meyers/John Oliver/Samantha Bee/Stephen Colbert are the most political in their material, in terms of "satire" I'd probably say that Jimmy Kimmel is the one actively going out and showing off how stupid people can be (such as with Lie Witness News). That's not to say that he's the funniest or smartest, but he's routinely the most subversive. The guy went on Jay Leno's own show and ripped him apart (and unchallenged!) for the Conan debacle, and recently appeared on James Corden's show and ridiculed the recurring "answer a question or eat something disgusting" segment.

I wouldn't put anyone in SNL up as a brilliant satirist - the material is pretty poor at times, but rests on the strength of the performers. Lucky for them, Kate McKinnon is the best actor they've had in years.
