There are a number of reasons I'm hesitant to recommend Kuso, the first film from artist and musician Steven Ellison, aka Flying Lotus. I'll start with the footage o
Spoiler alert
f an erect penis being stabbed. As with most footage of an erect penis being violently gored by a long steel rod, it's certainly unexpected.

So by the time you cover your eyes, it's already too late. And if you happened to blink, it's cool, Kuso delivers a callback.[/i]

To paraphrase the official plot synopsis, Kuso is a collection of semi-connected short films chronicling the lives of the mutated women, men, and children of Los Angeles, following the earthquake to end all earthquakes. But that's not really Kuso's story, let alone its point. While the film does hint at some interesting (though opaque) commentary about Los Angeles, racism, and the grim and bloody history of America, its creators are mostly interested in one thing: producing the grossest film ever.

They succeed. The sliced eyeball in Un Chien Andalou, the copious shit in River of Fundament, the corporeal mutilation of the entire torture-porn genre: it's all an amuse-bouche for the final course that is Kuso.

Intriguing.

Yeah this was the first on my list of films I thought looked interesting on the Sundance programme. I'm very intrigued.

This was feverish and revolting and I'm not sure I liked it - but I see its vision and a couple of bits were striking and funny so I can't totally dismiss it. It's essentially a mishmash of four short films, which kind of works to its strength and detriment at the same time. But it's singular, I'll give it that. Plus it features David Firth as a talking boil.

Been getting extremely frivolous with ketamine recently; just through sheer convenience and having too much money...I did two grams last night and for whatever reason this film popped into my head in the early hours.. I didnt put it on my tv just my laptop placed precariously in the dark which was probably the best way to watch it.

I love it for the hallucinatory fever dream that it was and the way it genuinely felt like some kind of glimpse into another dimension just as Its Hard to Be a God was...I daresay there was even something comforting in the flitting between different stories and the comfort and "thank the fuckedness" that I was on this side of the screen and not that one

Its fiercely imaginative and unhinged and yes it is boring because its not going to add intersting narrative points just to make sure your attention is maintained. It is what it is and for that i respect it hugely for that.

Its deep deep down in another world for sure. Its basically what you might imagine if someone asked you to imagine an actual stream of consciousness version of burroughs writing...a genuine Naked Lunch.

Does anyone like Cool3d world? I swear they had a hand in this. I know their work too well and some of it had their stink on it...and just bizarre that david firth was involved as well...Im desperate to know who the cool 3d world people are, what they look like...the first time i heard of them was when someone from this very forum posted the youtube video these are the things we do and have followed him all along so was cool to see that unmistakable art turn up in this.

Would I watch it sober? No i dont think id be able to or at least have to have breaks. I didnt even give it my full attention for the two hours and I genuinely wonder if thats how it is supposed to be ingested; ; flitting in and out of some horrifying but 100 per cent real other world at 4am when the world has just ever so slightly shifted and you wonder if maybe there is just more than what we see before us and what we dream at night.
