Jon Spencer and his Blues Explosion were fond of the theremin.

THis is one of the best performances I have ever seen, it has some ace theremin in it. I seriously love me some Jon Spencer

Did he also use a massive cone and a mic to get a theremin type sound? I vaguely remember seeing something like this on the telly (early 90s?)

grassbath

Supremely talented folkface Sufjan Stevens gets his theremin wailing in the climaxes of the excellent In The Devil's Territory, sure to make a good god-fearing citizen of any non-believer

ta everyone. i'll have a listen to the ones i don't know. keep em coming.

Saw St Vincent do Northern Lights with David Byrne. Bizarre use of a theremin at the end, more as a theatrical prop, and coincides with the end of her being any good as a recording artist. Are the two related? You tell me.

Fun Fact: The theremin is the only instrument that you could legibly play using your willy.

Disagree.

Put a slide on like a massive cock ring and play lap steel.

One to avoid the Jimmy Page Solo.

For the most part I would agree, but there were one or two (on audience bootlegs - none of the soundboard recorded ones as far as I know) that were genuinely pretty good.  Usually when he was on generally good form, which to be fair wasn't that often during the 75 and 77 tours.  But the US summer 1977 versions of No Quarter were pretty good - they had a good run for a few weeks where all four of them were on form[nb]and when I say "all four", I of course mean Plant and Page, cos it was rare that JPJ and Bonzo weren't on form[/nb].

You can also play the tambourine by dropping your balls on it.  Has to be quite a warm day, though, as you need a fair amount of loose drop.

I don't think that's a theremin. From memory of the live DVD, it's actually her voice put through some kind of wibbly processor.

Ah yes, you're right! I was even talking about that the other day. The one on "Train" is I'm pretty sure a theremin though.

It's her voice put through a Korg MS20 synth

Portishead's Mysterons.

The sound on Mysterons is Adrian Utley playing a Roland SH-101 (reproduced live using an SH-09 and later a MiniMoog), not a theremin.

She uses a theremin on Train live, but it sounds like a synth on the record. On Lovely Head it's her voice modulated by a Korg MS20, as mentioned above.

Noises For The Leg by the Bonzos uses a theremin
