Obviously this is an old joke, but maybe in the 70s it wasn't?

This might be of interest, discovered via The Comics Journal:

Very nice piece of interactivity there

Was Larson obliquely influenced or just thinking on similar lines I wonder?

I seem to remember the Brand New Monty Python Papperbok may have had something similar too.

I love Gary Larson cartoons. Aren't they good? Hmmm

Comparing Larson and Addams, I think Larson was more consistently funny, but Addams at his best takes me a little higher. I like the fact that Larson was obviously influenced by Addams but still took things in his own distinctive direction.

I guess it's a joke about her famous smile. But still, quite odd.

Pugsley and Wednesday Chistmas fun.

From 1952, maybe the first time for this sort of idea?

From 1959. Any ideas anybody?

Big, showy church displeases God, thus gets struck by lightning?

Ferris

I assumed it was because it looked like a Zenith-brand radio, and the stylized lightning bolt resembled the Zenith logo.

I haven't a clue what this is about and will be amazed if anyone else does either, except possibly Attila. Worth a try though. From the '40s.

Soz -- been awhile since I've been able to get back to this thread (but it's been great having so many panels to get through).

Yup, knew about the White Rock Girl without having to look it up :)

Look in the distance up the road. New victims.

^^^^^

I think that might be one of my favourite Addams cartoons. So suggestive, so much left to the imagination.
