[Muso] Software

Matthias

I'm a guitarist, used to recording to tape, both in the studio and at home on a 4-track.

I want to use my PC to record my music now. I was considering Guitar Tracks as that seems closest to what I'm used to. I also bought CubasisVST, but haven't been arsed to suss it out.

I've been told that Reason is the software to go for. Apparently, the forthcoming Prodigy album was crafted entirely using Reason.

Anybody have any suggestions?

@ssmaster

This is what I use

Cubase VST or Acid Pro 4 for constructing (Acid is easier to use but Cubase VST is more widely used)

Soundforge for resampling, cleaning, cutting samples

Fruity Loops for creating samples, loops and keyboard sounds from scratch.

Other people may have different pieces of software that they may use to achieve the desired results. No one piece of software does everything to the same standard really and thats why it is better to have a few different ones that specialise in different things.

I use:

Groove Agent for drums (through Cubase SX)

Edirol Orchestral for strings/brass/piano etc. (also with Cubase SX)

Fruityloops for synth sounds

Acid Pro 4 for multi-tracking

Reason is probably best if you're just creating dancey stuff with no 'live' instruments though

I'd like to create jazzy tracks, sort of a cross between St. Germain and John McLaughlin.

I take it Reason is no good for recording live tracks then. Should I stick with CubasisVST?

Absolutely not what you want at all. As Mr Unicorm suggests above, Reason doesn't  actually feature audio recording. And frankly, if that Prodigy rumour is true, then Liam Howlett is a lazy cunt.

Personally I use MOTU Digital Performer for audio recording, coupled with MOTU MachFive sampler. Digital Performer is a big American rival to Logic and Cubase, which I think is fantastic, but probably more than you need really. And it only runs on Mac.

For live tracks I think Cubasis will do just fine.  It's also good if you want to connect up anything midi like a synth or some other external midi equipment.

Reason is only really for messing around with samples and soft synths, not really for recording live instruments.  Still good though...

Oh, I forgot to add that I use Acid Pro 4 for live tracks also. I've tried using Cubase for this but I find it a bit of a pain to manipulate the audio.

Vermschneid Mehearties

Sonar for Guitar stuff.

A variety of things for dance music though. Any progs I can get my paws on.

Reeeeally want Atmosphere though.

If you want, then ye shall have. It is six CDs and takes up copious amounts of hard drive space, you realise?
PM your address and I shall send it forthwith.

Well, I'm going to give CubasisVST a try. I've got version 4.. bought it a couple of months ago, but never installed it.

Where's the best place to download virtual instruments? Cubasis gives you a singing monk! Oh, per-lease!

I like the look of Fruity Loops too. I saw that it cost £100, so I think I'll be on KazaaLite later!

Vermschneid Mehearties

Wow! :S!  That's really kind of you 5KS.

Yeah, I think it takes up about 4gigs of space (luckily I have about 20gigs free).

I'll PM you immediately!

P.S- If you're off to the Manchester Meet, I'll be the one getting the drinks in, don't you worry.
