amnesiac

dude's dick was ridic, I didn't think that was a middle-eastern... trait.

NEW PAGE DICK

Bazooka

My Mrs said is that dick CGI? I've been using the excuse that mine is bad quality CGI for years.

Nobody Soup

it was a prosthetic. the dude asked for one and they sent it to him with a note saying "how's it hanging?"

so this is what it feels like when you're gender's body is portrayed unrealistically on TV... women, I'm sorry for everything.

Small Man Big Horse

Looked like a normal dick to me. About the twice the size of mine, but it's not unheard of.

kittens

what did we think then boys
kittens review:
FIRST HALF BORING
SECOND HALF BETTER AND KINDA INTRIGUING
my interest level in the series is:
SLIGHTLY WANING BUT I WILL CONTINUE TO WATCH

Bazooka

His wife is awful, didn't really tell us about why Shadow Moon is important but maybe it doesn't until later in the book?

I liked it, looks lovely as always and I really dig the opening sequence, one of the best combination of imagery and sound I can remember in a very long time.

Nobody Soup

that episode was a bit flat for me, funny moments with the arm and stuff, but knowing what's coming from the book I was kinda getting excited.

it's also beginning to deviate from the book a fair bit in back stories but that's fine.

wooders1978

2 episodes in and visually its absolutely amazing but underneath the beautiful veneer I can't help thinking it's actually a bit shit - am I wrong?

TKO

The trouble with the wonderful title sequence is that it sets up a show that's more claustrophobic, disorientating and nightmarish, more haunted by a primeval evil, than the one we're getting.

Don't get me wrong, I'm really enjoying the show (even though I thought the latest episode was a bit of a waste), but for me it's been more comic and easygoing than terrifying or disturbing. At the moment, the title sequence doesn't quite fit.

Peru

That title sequence has certainly been 'inspired' by the opening of the Fincher Dragon Tattoo film.

I think this is dull as ditchwater. The lead is a total charisma vacuum and the whole thing is horribly over-directed and designed (endless needless slo-mo shots of inconsequential things are always a bad sign). The return of Twin Peaks has really shown how the HBO model has become utterly formulaic in its excesses and episode structures.

I think I've been spoiled by Twin Peaks. I have been singing the praise of this show to friends since it kinda felt like it filled the void that Legion left but the last episode was rather boring, I spent the whole time waiting for it to end so I could show  friend episode 4 of Peaks.

I'll persevere no less.

Penfold

Latest episode is available early again.

Mister Six

Partway through the third episode, I thought they needed to knock the short stories on the head a bit to let the actual plot get some traction. Then they do, and the first thing they devote an entire, unbroken episode to is Shadow's horrible, unsympathetic, boring wife. Really hoping for them to get the series proper back underway next week. How many more "Somewhere in America" stories are left from the book?

Episode 5 (this weeks) definitely progressed the narrative along, they seem to have introduced most of the Gods by now, I haven't read the book but from what I know of the main characters, they have shown something off them. But with only 3 episodes left we shall see where it goes. Episode 5 I thought was really good, his wife is a really horrible person.

amnesiac

Ep5 was amazing and made me glad this is part of my weekly schedule.

We finally get to see who Crispin Glover is and I loved his performance although Mr Wednesday asking the crow to slow down is in my top 10 TV moments of 2017. I don't get why you all hate asshole wife; she's been completely honest and she's incredibly gorgeous even with her autopsy scars, maybe I just like strong independent dead women.

Didn't want this episode to end.

I'm with you amnesiac, not sure the dead wife deserved a whole episode devoted to her last week but I do find the character intriguing and can't understand the hatred either. And like you say, this week's episode was top top stuff, with Crispin Glover being all kinds of fantastic.

Small Man Big Horse

I enjoyed the most recent episode as well. It's not perfect by any means and sometimes the dialogue is a bit on the nose, but if I turn off my brain I find it a fun enough ride.

Bazooka

I liked it too, I did get a bit lost at points mainly when the dialogue was so quiet but the music was thumping, only 2 more episodes left I think.

samadriel

I loved the whole Vulcan thing, it was a lot of fun, and reflected interestingly on the 'Odin satellite over North Korea' that Mr World and Media tried tempting Wednesday with.

Edit - Wrong thread.

Small Man Big Horse

Gah, I want to like this show but I think it's a little too self-indulgent. I know this episode is essentially a kind of Mad Sweeney origin story but I wasn't that interested in Essie's life, at least not 40 odd minutes of it. It's a real problem when the main narrative is so strong, I know a big part of the book is telling the story of America but to stop us wanting to be back with Shadow and Wednesday they need to be more interesting than this.

Zetetic

I find that the problems with it also tend to complement it. It is a bit tacky and cheap in parts, it's fairly shallow (or something like that) and struggles with momentum - but all that seems to me broadly in line with the story that it's telling.

(I'm coming from being able to half-remember finding the book quite fun, but not much more than that.)

It's been about fifteen years since I read it but I remember enjoying it a lot, and then being incredibly fucked off with the ending. So I've got that to look forward to in two seasons time!

Bazooka

I just want to watch it all in one go.

SteveDave

I thought the latest episode was quite lovely. I thought it meant that Porn Stache was with the girl from Lemony Snicket because she was a descendant of Essie.

But our download had a mini "making of" thing after it and they said they cast her as Essie just because she could do the voice.

Small Man Big Horse

Episode 8 - And we're here at the season finale already, cuh, those bloody lazy yanks with their annoyingly short seasons. Spoilers as it's not officially aired yet:

The moon god dun an orgasm and then ended up homeless. That was daft. Again, I know these stories are an integral part of the book but they've got to up their game, I was bored with this. Still, the rest was great fun for once, it's a much more fun series when we're following Wednesday and he's running over rabbits and being melodramatic. And dumb old Shadow has finally worked out what's going on, which is an enormous relief.

I really think if I waited several years until it ended and then watched it over a short period of time I'd enjoy it so much more, as I've a feeling the structure and long waits between short seasons is going to continue to frustrate me. Never going to happen though!

Nobody Soup

the thing with the episodes around backstories, they're very much a stylistic tool of Gaiman, every one of this books/comics has off-tangent loosely related stories, it's all down to his obsession with myths that he's trying to create is own small fables. they're not really backstories, more just stories with a loose moral (the essie one I guess was alluding to the idea of religious darwinism and the "pray and be rewarded" deal wednesday mentioned).

it's actually a bit sad it's coming out as an old style, one episode a week, show because these little forays would work much better in the binge watch format.

anyway, er, I like it. sort of. it was a bit of a mess really. it hasn't immersed me in it's world enough that everything is interesting. when I was watching say House of Cards or Breaking Bad, I'd constantly be going "oh my god!" at plot points being revealed, I think maybe the only one I did that here was finding out Mad Sweeney played a part in Laura's death (I don't think this was in the book, but I completely approve of this because it makes total sense in the grand scheme, much more than just having it an act of chance). when most of the other big stuff happened I was just like "ok, I guess that's something.". I did still like it though, just nothing's gained much traction yet.

And she played Frances in the Tom Hardy Krays film too. Talented.

The theme tune still reminds me of something else and I still can't figure out what that is.
