Why the fuck is there a wrestling thread on this forum?

I'm a wrestling fan and, on the whole, the vast majority of wrestling fans are dribbling fucking idiots.  There's a reason why advertisers don't generally buy adverts during wrestling TV shows - studies show that the audience is thick and therefore have a shitty job and don't have any disposable income to spend.  Fans at live wrestling events are often an absolute nightmare and I do sometimes wonder why I watch it.

So, I can understand why yer Sydward here thinks about wrestling the way that he does.  Hell, I think the same about football.  I don't go into football threads and slag off everyone who likes it though - it's not like I'll change anyone's mind and it's a but antagonistic and weird and, well, just a bit pointless really.

My middle-class, university-educated, computer-operator (in the 1970s that was a much more specialised thing) dad watched barbaric spectacles for the masses like wrestling and boxing and horse-racing-a legacy of his proletarian upbringing.

Wrestling is entertaining stuff, even if it is a load of old shite 99% of the time.

There, I said it. fite me irl

I hear ya.  I'm a middle class systems analyst from a working class Brexit stronghold with a 2:2 myself.  D'you want some pocket money?

Actually, I'd be genuinely interested to know if there actually was a wrestler during the eighties who used to whip his opponents with a metal chain, or if that was just an urban myth these two durr-brains at my middle school seized upon. Don't go into any great detail, though, just tell me the bare facts.

I remember having an argument with these two dickheads at school who were raving about a wrestling match they'd seen where one of the 'villains' started swinging a metal chain around which, they claimed, cracked the other competitor's head open. I tried to tell them it was all rehearsed / special effects / choreography / smoke and mirrors / bullshit but they wouldn't have it and tried to claim that I was the idiot.

Hopefully they'll be reading this and think 'bloody hell, he was right!'. That'll show 'em.

So the wrestling thread I've noticed a couple of times in passing is actually a thread about that fake sport? Oh. Never popped in to have a look at it, and won't; I always assumed it was an "ironic" thread that contained a ton of posts that had nothing to do with wrestling and were probably even unfunnier than wrestling. Cheers.

Word of advice: We know. We've always known. It's theatre. Extremely low-brow, yes, but theatre, nonetheless.

It's staggering how many times, as a wrestling fan (For the record, I stopped watching 2/3 years ago, still get defensive about it though) you have to hear the "You know it's fake, yeah?" speech and how almost EVERYONE who tries to give this speech to you thinks they're the first one to shatter your world. They never are. It's usually something you realise of your own accord.Oh, and chains are nothing. Garden strimmer, anyone? This is far from the kind of thing I enjoyed, though, but sometimes. good old-fashioned garbage wrestling is fun in small doses.

That giant kitten in the Goodies wasn't real, was it?

Basil Fawlty wasn't a real person, was he?

As much as I'd like to think that John Wick was a real person, I'm led to believe he's not.

DOCTOR WHO IS NOT REAL EITHER, MUCH AS IT PAINS ME TO ADMIT IT.

I'm actually quite well educated, and I like wrestling.  Why?

It's the same reason that I sometimes like big blockbuster films instead of intellectual stuff like Twelve Years A Slave - escapism.

I know most of it's planned in advance, that doesn't stop it being entertaining to me.  I reckon they have scripts for films as well, yet I still find it entertaining to watch films.

What I find more fun, is watching someone as talented as Chris Jericho clearly taking the piss and getting over with a crowd of thousands by making up "The List of Jericho" which is essentially him writing down "The List", which consists of him writing down the names of people who've annoyed him.  It's the way as a silly little idea it builds as time goes on, with his clipboard getting more and more posh, his pen-clicking movements getting more and more exaggerated, now THIS I find very funny, especially when people like Xavier Woods take real exception to going on "The List".

These guys work really hard as well, and can suffer some serious injuries.  I respect that, and the effort they put in for my entertainment.

So yeah, sometimes I like to switch off for a little while, and just enjoy some sports entertainment.  I'm not ashamed of that.

I mean I thought CookdandBombd was for intelligent people, not dribbling idiots who enjoy the unedifying spectacle of musclebound louts grappling with each other in front of arenas full of knuckle draggers.

Whilst I'm here, I wish to point out that this wasn't a very nice way of asking the question.  There's lots of things I don't like about CaB, but the fact that it's generally a forum where people can talk about many things they may like, in a relatively civilised manner, is one of it's greatest strengths.  I've tried to be nice and answer the question about why I like wrestling in a reasonably well-mannered way, but your question was phrased in a very rude and obnoxious manner.

"I don't understand why some people like wrestling - could you explain please?" would be a far better opening question.  You could ask something like that in the wrestling thread and you'd get fairly reasonable answers.  Ask the question you did in the wrestling thread and you would generally be told to fuck off for being a snide rude cunt with no manners.

Hope this helps.

Adults having a sort of linked (and sober), wide ranging conversation about the merits of different types of shoes and wrestling is actually quite rewarding, in a bizarre sense and despite all the associated negativity. Feels like a parallel world where the shite spoken during a lock in has replaced everyday talk during the day.

I wonder if we would sort out all the worlds problems if this were true?

Oh god, now the cynicism is kicking in and can imagine family guy using this as a very lazy idea for one of its episodes. I think we as a group must all bow down to the supreme leader, LARTLE, and travel to a swamp somewhere, in a head similar to the one in Zardoz but looking more like Bob Todd and drink funny tasting orange juice.

This is what I've been waiting for. THIS.

Yeah, not actually going to apply any of it though are you?
