His bumbling, genially conciliatory manner and frequent misunderstanding of and slowness to grasp situations were played down in contrast to most of the other performances, and were a good foil to them in that sense.

Also, he didn't seem to be interested in Miss Belfridge 'in that way', unlike the drooling Peacock.

I've put this up before but I wish all AYBS? episodes were as surreal as this clip. I had a bit of a crush on Candy Davies at the time. Lucky old Gary Olsen*.
