Part of me wonders if we should just throw Hameed in irrespective of the fact he can't buy a run in the championship. Maybe he'll be one of those mercurial talents that are built for tests. Of course the likelihood is that he'll fail and it'll ruin his career but it's a risk I'm willing to take.

The much more likely explanation is that he wasn't that great anyway but like many players passed scored a few runs before his average settled down to the low 30s.

Ultimately if you look at Jennings/Stoneman/Westley's first class average - look at it - that's what England are now reduced to.

Always drop catches
Never finish off the tail
Havent found a competent opener for over 10 years
Can't use the referral system effectively
Dud captaincy
Still not playing a specialist spinner
Recalling people on hope rather than expection
Culture of pressure that ruins new players
Terrible barrel scraping selections
Scrapheap of talent we've ruined

Good list, but if they'd only held a couple of those catches yesterday, no-one would have been interested in points 2 through 10. Again.

Papering over the cracks, again and again. They'll probably half redeem themselves next game, and everyone will be clapping them on the backs again. It'll need to get a lot, lot worse before they'll look this in the eye properly.

I like the fact that we get players that look like they have something about them into the team rapidly, but it is true that a lot of the batsman are getting into the team for the last 5 years or so, in their mid to late twenties too, have mid 30s average and a handful of tonnes. Even in the worst of the 80s and 90s the players coming in had solid first class careers, but perhaps that is the measure of the 2 league county system?

Curran, with his massive head, looks to be a very useful player.

thraxx

Bad light; absolute bollocks.

iamcoop

Nice to see Curren having a go. This would be India's highest ever winning run chase in England should they get it. We've pulled a game out of the bag but we're still a bag of shit. Nothing will change.

monolith

Yeah far more than I was expecting us to get a couple of hours ago. India marginal favourites still but almost the toss of a coin now, if we get a couple of early wickets then I think we might scrape through.

Good on you Curran lad. Take the rest out the back.

thraxx

Need Broad to actually serve up a couple of decent spells here. Otherwise fucked. No drops please gents.

monolith

Be funny if Rashid won us the match, probably won't be enough to take man of the match from Curran unless it's something mental like a 9fer but his comments afterwards could be feisty.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

The openers will be aggressive, this is the only way people have managed to get their eye in on the wicket. There's a ball out there with your name on it so no point defending overly. Guts it out for 10-15 balls then chance your arm as Curran and Kohli showed.

Curran isn't infected by the AIDS that is the current regime so unsurprisingly he did well, as Bess did.

Malan has to go after this test. Horribly exposed against the away swinger and cant catch for shit. Cook goes too, also Buttler and Broad gets a rest.

Who comes in though? If Ian Bell is still knocking about then he should have been brought back about 3 years ago.

thraxx

Fucking hell, England are basically having to take 14 extra wickets every match in order to bowl out a team, so bad are our slips. Must drive anderson and broad mad; that must be worth an extra 20 or so wickets a piece to their tallies.

monolith

3 regulation dropped catches at slip in an entire series is poor but 3 in a match is disgusting.

Broad might be having one of his mad spells though.

monolith

If England get Kohli then that will be that I would think. Still in the balance but England slight favourites now.

I think the guy might be the only genius batsman in Test cricket. His technique and adaptability is astonishing.

rjd2

Both batting line ups are so brittle at the moment which means we could nave a really fun series. India's top three looks very dodgy, Dhawan forever a hack, Vijay a shadow of the player he was a few years ago and Rahul so inexperienced outside Asia. Rahane has not been great either recently.

England's opening partnership not to canny either while Malan looks wretched at the moment.

India are favourites tomorrow, but an early wicket and its a slogger in Pandya and tail enders to get them over the line.  Fascinating test.

monolith

Yeah, swung back to India slightly again overnight. Brilliant test though, ebbed and flowed beautifully. I think the first half hour or even twenty minutes might decide the test tomorrow, England need an early wicket.

I hope neither team scores 300 in this series. Looks like a safe bet at present.

monolith

That really should be that now but it's seldom ever that easy and they don't need many.

rjd2

That was a poor dismissal for Kohli. Pandya may as well try and go into t20 mode looking at the mugs at the other end.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

Determined to keep us all on tenterhooks...

Although we've been fuckawful with the bat it's made for a dramatic game.

There's not an enormous amount going on with the ball or the pitch, I think Rashid is a good move.

Edit: And there you go. Good lad.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

Top bollocks

If they knock off 40 for the last wicket then fair play to the absolute fucking cunts

Absolutely agree. That lofted cover drive over Root was pure metal bollocks. Good on him. Definitely one of the best Tests I've seen in ages. Superb cricket match.

monolith

Yeah already the best test in England since 2013 and it's getting more exciting each ball. Don't really mind if India win from here as a 1 wicket win would be incredible to watch and we've 4 more tests to get back in to it.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

Vaughan and Aggers laughing at a fat woman in the crowd - that was an utterly bizarre offensive moment.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

YEEEEEEE

AAAAAAHHHHHHH

Excellent!

Shoulders?-Stomach!

All about our pace bowlers in this match, they all chipped in tremendously.

As for the batting and fielding - it should have never come to that.
