So I make these mixes...

Every six months I get busy with Audacity and post a mix of 18 or so of my favourite tracks from that period on Mixcloud. OK perhaps 'mix' is a bit of an exaggeration - 'medley' might be more appropriate, as the overlap between tracks is often imperceptible and the levels are all over the place. Still, it's enough to give the impression of a mellifluous whole. The arrival of these mixes is timed to coincide with the moments the Earth hits its maximum axial tilt, which is why I like to call them my Solstice mixes. Branding.

For those unfamiliar with my music tastes they consist mostly of electronic artists, especially lady ones who make glacial, ethereal, slightly gothy, avant-garde synth-pop. There's occasionally some ambient and experimental stuff on them as well but I try to stick with songs you can hum along to. The newer ones have tracklists (and even their own avatars, as you can see) but for some reason it doesn't display the artists' names on the older ones.

Anyway, then. My mixes. Like big songs made from lots of little ones. Maybe you will like them. They are here: www.mixcloud.com/nortoncanes

There will, of course, be another one along in the next week or so.

I do a weekly show for my local radio station, and just hit upon the idea of turning my playlists into continuous mixes and bunging them on my Mixcloud. So here's a mix of last night's show;

nice one KJ, I too do a weekly show and tend to record the middle bit (about an hour) and talk either side of the mix
as I like to let folks download/burn to disc so they will hopefully listen to it more than once, it's a good idea to add a tracklisting too

Cheers HG. The bosses at the station are pretty cool about what we can play, although it is still community radio so I always kick off the show with better known songs so as not to alienate our fairly narrow-minded listenership. Still, there's Gong, Fela Kuti and Floating Points nestled in amongst your Neil Youngs and Yazoos so it's fairly broad.

I did add the tracklist and timestamp to the mix.

Always enjoy your mixes by the way.

I co-hosted a Space Rock show on the radio last night. Here is a mix based on the playlist;

What do you use to make these, HG?

Head Gardener

I record onto a PC via mixing from 2 decks + 2 CD players + a computer for downloads, I'm very old school and just take a box of stuff in and see what happens,
it does my head in that folks pre-record their shows and then sit back & read the paper!

Thanks Blodders! I found that Max Essa track on the most recent 'Eskimo Recordings Presents' album, The Red Collection. There's usually a few decent Scandinavian deep house tracks on them.

Oh, and it turns out I already own something by him - he was formerly in a duo called, unsurprisingly, Essa who released a great album called Detritus Excitus on Paper records in 2001.
