What is a human? An ugly incongruence of flesh, bone, hair, gristle, blood, bile, phlegm, fat, piss, shit and other sundry fluids, connected by tubes, squeezed into a sack of skin and left to flourish as best it can. A thing of no inherent elegance - yet from this gruesome coagulation can emerge sentience, instinct, reason, beauty, melody... even love. That so many disparate components together are able to produce such an astonishing yield is testament to the harmony in which they work. Muscles may only be connected to bones by the slenderest of tendons, yet we can run and dance. The mind may be connected to eyes and ears by the gossamer filaments of the nervous system yet we can sense the world around us. My guts may be eight meters in length but I know exactly when it's time for them to be emptied.

And as it is with the human form, so it is with Summersolstice 2019: a preposterous farrago of tunes released over the last six months, created to mark the advent of the year's longest day. This time round there are eighteen tracks - or 'organs', if you will - each connected to each other by the very meagerest of bonds, in a manner which makes such a mockery of the term 'mix' that it might as well tweak its nose in front of the whole class before calling its dad a spaz and defecating in its pencil case. If conventional mixes are analogous to the lithe, lissom body of an international athlete or gymnast, the way these tracks conjugate bears more resemblance to the debilitated anatomy of a Russian engineer who's spent 15 minutes shoveling sand over the burning core of an exploded Soviet nuclear reactor. And speaking of the Chernobyl disaster, long-term Solstice devotees will be reassured to know that the levels on this mix are, like the radioactive fallout from that incident, absolutely all over the place.

For the artwork I've plundered the catalogue of Yuri Hill [www.artstation.com/hill], if you want to thank him personally. Or maybe you should wait until the end of the year, because I’m going to nick one of his pictures for the Wintersolstice mix too.

Oh yeah, almost forgot - who can you expect to hear? If I’m addressing any of the 36 people who listened to the last Solstice mix they'll be glad to know there are more darkly beguiling synth-driven tracks from the likes of Pixel Grip, Dis Fig, Rosa Anschütz, Holly Herndon, Boy Harsher and Doomsquad, plus Solstice favourites Pixx, AURORA and Tamaryn. The rest of you can find out for yourself.

What you waiting for? My body is your body.

my lad has uploaded his most recent CRMK show, it's shorter than usual as I got him to the studio late (there was a crash on the M1)
He does and plays what he likes with no input from me which is how it should be!
