Norton Canes

The bleak midwinter. A bitter, merciless cold seizes the land, its icy chill reaching inside every human heart. An evil new power has arrived, more terrible even than the last, spreading its credo of enmity and division, exploiting the marginalised and vulnerable wherever it can. Fear, selfishness, ignorance and injustice stand poised to wreak a terrible vengeance on us all. Where once the braziers of kindness and generosity blazed with a welcome heat, now the only warmth to be had is from the well-stoked furnace of human greed.

And the Christmas bells that ring there are the clanging chimes of doom.

Well tonight, thank god it's you instead of them who can listen to Wintersolstice 2019, a collection of darkly beguiling synth-driven tracks from the last six months (plus a couple from before the summer that I missed first time round) constructed with such ineptitude that the term 'mix' refuses to debate the issue before running away and locking itself in a fridge. Whereas conventional mixes flow as smoothly as the transition from one fraudulent, deceitful cunt of a Tory prime minister to the next, these tracks jostle brusquely against each other with the barely-concealed contempt of a group of Change UK MPs squabbling over the bill at Nandos. And long-term Solstice Mix aficionados will be jubilant to learn that the levels, like the Labour party's last election campaign, are absolutely all over the place.

Zingers.

Look I won't waste your time with any more of this nonsense, let's cut to the tunes. What options are on the polling card this time around? Well I'm pleased to announce that this collection is another 20 track epic, featuring artists like Poliça, Chromatics, Black Marble, Debby Friday, Lapalux, Yeule, Pale Honey, HVOB and Iglooghost. The exit poll shows that a massive 41 people listened to 2019's Summersolstice Mix - let's see if this one can at least get more than the SNP have parliamentary seats.

Wintersolstice 2019. For the few, it would appear, not the many.

Dusty Substance

I've been working my through a number of these mixes and have loved a lot of what I've heard so far.

A couple of questions, though.

What do you use to put the mixes together?

and....

How much thought and preparation do you generally put into them? Is it a case of "Those two songs would probably mix well" or is it a bit more in-depth than  that?

Back in the days when we were still able to go out to the pub, I had a couple of regular vinyl only DJ spots in my town and I plan half my set a few nights in advance by using a colossal Excel spread sheet (I've logged every record and song I own by title, artist, year, length and BPM) by starting with a slow BPM and then building over a couple of hours. This has lead to me blending songs together that I would never have previously thought of (ie: Black Betty by Ram Jam mixes incredibly well with Doin' The Do by Betty Boo).

However, any planning ahead I do can often be de-reailed by drunken requests.

Cheers all, and keep up the good mixes.

This is a great question! I always wonder this. I'm sure there's a level of improvisation that can be achieved, but when I used to do it I would have done some prep before hand and always played stuff in exactly the order I planned. Not to the extent of the excel though that's great. My mixing is rather bad though, I always want to mix too many genres/bpms and it doesn't sound too fluid.

Also kudos on the mixes, have been enjoying them

Head Gardener

I tend to listen to stuff in the car/cellar and if it's new I think of something old that may mix along with the end or start of a track,
sometimes it's something new to new but I listen to a lot of stuff and have a lot to dig into and that helps as there's always something
that sounds a bit like something else, if that makes sense? I take around 20 to 30 albums/CDs/downloads into the studio with a rough idea
what goes with what (I make notes) and then go with the flow of what sounds right (to me) in my headphones.

Since our studio closed after the bug I have been reduced to mucking about on Audacity at home. I don't have a mic sorted but can link stuff
up on Audacity easy, it seemed like a good idea last week to cover the 2 hour mix with old jingles/adverts from the 60's & 70's and then wash
a transistor radio noise over the top but although it sounded OK for a laugh was probably too much for 2 hours but that's the joy of messing with records.

I have VDJ at home but it's not as sexy as the one at the studio so have not been layering stuff as much as I'd like, the edit facility on Audacity is great fun
at least for the time being, and I'm enjoying pulling out my old singles and sticking them together in some kind of order, I shall just play it straight tomorrow night
as there will be Wombles and NEU! in the mix and thanks to anyone who's enjoyed any of my previous ones.

I found this exclusive mix for my show by the late Robert Miles featuring previously unreleased tracks with Robert Fripp, it came about when I was approached
his promotions company, I spent the day in his studio (beautiful and so smart, lots of gold discs too) He was charming and friendly and when I asked if he could
do something exclusive for the show this was what he sent me, sadly missed he was a true gent. download
