good news. I'm not quite sure yet if their music works for the atmosphere of the series though.

Given you also said this I think you need to RECALIBRATE YOUR OPINIONS pal

Loved LOST and The Leftovers but I think this show is maybe a bit shite. The comic book is very good though.

I can't see the show doing anything else that could match up to what they did there, but I will say that even if the rest was shit, it was worth it for that. At first I thought it was sort of antithetical to the premise since Will's plight was wholly sympathetic, but it makes him sort of the show's Manhattan. He's the only "hero", in this case the only guy whose sense of justice is pure and detached from his ego, but he still loses his sense of self. Do wish we got more interaction with the other Minutemen though, Nite Owl would have been NYPD around the same time and likely aware what his fellow officers were up to, time with Silk Spectre would have made the wife's sudden departure a bit more understandable for the average viewer, but they said what they needed to say. Lots of little reasons to appreciate that episode thematically and technically.

Forgive me as I've not seen the show yet, but...Hooded Justice is white, wears a hood and has a noose round his neck. Short of calling him KKK Man, I'm not sure what else Moore could have done. So how would turning Hooded Justice into a black guy and ignoring all the obvious parallels to fascism make Moore think "actually, that's fucking great"?
Should prob watch the episode then to fully understand the claim you are addressing. The white skin is explained. HJ was such an insignificant character in the comic that whatever it can be interpreted that Moore was trying to say about fascism with this character that was barely mentioned pales in comparison to what the show achieved with the same template. That it expands on the character's mystery rather than retcon anything only makes it more impressive to me and I feel like Moore would appreciate what they've done there, though likely not the rest of the show.

What I will say about the rest of the show is that it feels a lot more limp and weaker in comparison. Don't really give a shit about Veidt going on trial with an audience of clones or that trite Lady Trieu character seemingly emulating Veidt's plan, or even Angela and Laurie uncovering the mystery that the first 5 episodes set up. After what we just saw, it almost makes it hard to care anymore since not only is that going to be, without question, the highlight of the series, but a gay colored man of justice's pre-WWII struggle with systemic racism and identity is a bit more weighty than the aim of a white supremacist organization who have appropriated fuckin Rorschach's mask and some corny lady's sci-fi master plot

EDIT: I'd really like to see a 70's art house type of noir film set in the same era dealing with the same issues

Nah, it's not a KKK hood, it's an executioners hood. I really don't think there was any intentional KKK link.

I literally cannot understand how the mind of someone who doesn't like this works. Completely inexplicable.

Likewise, i am thoroughly loving every moment of this show.

So is time passing faster for Veidt or does his bits start earlier than the main narrative of the series?

I think the latter, but the former is possible too.

I think that has something to do with the old man blowing out candles

Hoping we get a solid resolution to the Lube Man arc by the series finale.

It was foreshadowed by a someone (maybe Looking Glass. Can't recall at the moment - it's Thanksgiving Day and I'm drunk) watching an 8mm gay porn of two men dressed up as them at it like knives a couple of episodes back. Also, in the original comic, HG's sado-homosexuality is alluded to by The Comedian after he kicks his cunt in for trying to rape Silk Spectre in a loaded scene that American Hero Story glosses over

(Seriously, how are people not liking this? It's like letting Stanley Kubrick loose on Arthur Miller or something! The HJ origin story from last week is still haunting my thoughts - particularly the image of the B&W cop car dragging the sepia-toned Tulsa victims behind them after trying to get Reeves to 'go for a drink with them'. Seriously jaw-dropping stuff. )

I think that was an episode of American Hero Story. It wasn't 8mm film for sure.

Huge love for this.
The Hooded Justice episode particularly. To have that moment in the alley where you go "Are they going to do thi- HOLY CRAP THEY'RE DOING IT".
Then there's that heartbreaking moment where he realises Captain Metropolis is more about play acting and doesn't want to solve anything real.
I need to watch it again to see where the chronology of the Hooded Justice's role and departure relates to the TV show. I'm still not sure whether Captain M brings in a replacement

I think you might be right - I had a hazy memory of a projector light behind him, but I think I might have just got elements of the trailer mixed in.

Some other, hopefully less half-arsed, observations:

Getting LGBTQ campaigner and American Horror Story star Cheyenne Jackson to play a gay superhero in American Hero Story was a neat touch (even though he's so appallingly good looking, it now makes me want to wear a hood whenever I leave the house, but for purely aesthetic purposes).

The cyclops sign was clearly a reference to the OK alt-right hand signal, yes? I like that they explicitly link that with actual Nazis, thus robbing 'edgy' livestreamers of their daft wee 'are we or aren't we?' gang sign.

The subliminal messaging with the movie projectors made me think of Flicker, a not-very good book with an interesting premise. I wonder if it was an influence.

Mister Six

I don't recall a projector, but home projectors are hardly an obscure thing these days, much less in post-Dr Manhattan techno world.

Cyclops sign was deffo a lift from actual white supremacist wankstains.

Didn't get the American Horror Story ref, but that's a good one.

Ja'moke

The next episode is very good too, though not quite to the heights of the Hooded Justice flashback. And the Veidt stuff is now over staying its welcome. But there's some more bold storytelling and interesting revelations. Really, really loving this show.

Ant Farm Keyboard

The Ryan Murphy reference is less American Horror Story than American Crime Story.

samadriel

Well that was wild.  And with, what, two episodes to go?  Can't wait to see what's next.  I think they should have introduced the amnesia earlier, as I don't remember anything about it before Trieu brought it up in this episode, but I don't mind that much.  I wonder if the elephant means anything?

At the trial, the prosecution specifically refers to their 'jailer' as 'he', which disappointed me a bit because I thought it was Trieu who was behind it, and I don't see why Dr Manhattan would do such a thing.  Can't think who else would be able to do it.

They never forget.

I'm glad to see that somebody is addressing the elephant in the room.

Mobius

That was cool. Definitely agree that the amnesia stuff should have come up sooner - felt like they were trying to shove a bit too much backstory into 1 episode there. Like they mention his amnesia, then Lady Trieu mentions that Doc Manhattan is walking about pretending to be normal.. all just came together too quickly.

But then I guess the Cavalry were outside their house at the end there, so presumably they also know her husband is Doc ? Trieu said they were gonna capture him within the hour.

Cool ep with loads of weird stuff happening. Not entirely sure what's going on in the show but every episode has enough cool shit you don't really mind...

a peepee tipi

As much as I loved ep 6, I think I'm done with this. No interest in the characters now that we have their backstories, plot is a weird mix of too much and not enough, Lady Trieu and the antagonists are boring and lame, they've really fucked Veidt, and the Manhattan thing isn't sitting well with me at all. Laurie having no real reaction to the Hooded Justice reveal beyond repeating what we just saw last week was kind of a letdown too, as was Frances Fisher's corny turn in response. Oh well

Hundhoon

ive been meaning to give this a go but been getting severely mixed messages.

Rotten Tomatoes

Critic Rating-  96%
Audience score - 45%

I was obsessed with the graphic novel years ago, was excited about the film in 2008 watched it once, hated it cant remember anything about it.
I try to watch anything Trent Reznor does the score to as he is widely seen as the most talented American musician of his generation so immensely influential, whether you like NIN or not he changed the game, NINs music was very epic and cinematic so im glad he is spending more time in this area.

Mobius

96% is ridiculously over the top but on the other hand, any show that deals with race relations or has black protagonists gets downvoted in user ratings by 4chan morons or whoever.

I've just looked at the first few negative user reviews for Watchmen on Metacritic and yep, so predictable..

"The only other thing it does is pound home that "Racism & Police Brutality" bad, except we are the choir and know that already. How this made it to series is beyond comprehension."

"filled to the brim with divisive identity-based politics no more original in presentation, caricatures and themes than the dozens of other such shows infesting modern entertainment with killjoy finger-wagging pandering that ironically worsens"

"Total garbage. This is a show made by the extreme left for the extreme left. Watcher beware."

"Of course the Reviewers in the Media will love the "Woke" Globo-Homo themes "

"ugh... this is just another propaganda tv show... they turned watchmen into another nonsensual story about genders and racism that has nothing to do with an original comics"

Just the same shit on anything that doesn't feature exclusively white males.

Inspector Norse

I've thought every episode up to now has been pretty great, but this week was somewhat uneven - do we really need or want three backstory-heavy episodes in a row? - and then the twist at the end... Henry Winkler is strapping on his waterskis and the speedboat driver's revving the engine.
