As I recently re-read their hilarious memoir of the same name, let's go with Sick On You by The Hollywood Brats, which is pretty much exactly what punk ended up being four years later.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3O_0wyXvTTU  Glam's influence on punk is way too downplayed in favour of the nothing dirge of Pub Rock.

Oh and Death, the black proto-punk...metal? band were made for this thread.  Politicians In My Eyes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rl3FstCc_OY

Like that This Heat track, Emmanuelle Parrenin's Topaze from 1977 is gottdamned dark Trip-Hop decades too early.  Plus it was coming from an airy-fairy folk singer not too dissimilar from your Pentangle and the like.

Not many albums are as good from start to finish as that one. Cheers for that XXX

Infinite Karma to you Sin Agog

Gimmix by John Cooper Clarke ('78 I think) could be by some hot shit new band a la Sleaford Mods.

Vlaidimir Cosma's Monsieur Prescovic (from the 1982 soundtrack for Le père Noël est une ordure) sounds like Daft Punk. Since it's the soundtrack of a French slapstick comedy it also reminds me of a record called Levretto by Flairs which was the soundtrack for Les Beaux Gosses 27 years later.

A Girl Like You (Edwyn Collins) could be from the late 60s or the 90s, sounds like both

I heard "I'll be Over Tonight" by The Move for the first time last week and I really thought it was a newish Decemberists-style piece.

On the subject of all-black punk bands, the world was barely ready for Bad Brains' hardcore-rock hybrid I Against I when it came out in 1986 (Dele Fadele gave it 6 out of 10 in his NME review, which seems laughable in retrospect), so it seems almost beyond belief that they actually wrote that title track in 1980, when hardcore itself was barely a thing, and had been sitting on it for over half a decade.

Sebastian Cobb

This has future echoes of blues and hip hop long before they were a thing:

In a way I think it sounds less dated than the origins of rap like PSK, What does it mean? simply because of how a raw 909 sounds so dated now.

poodlefaker

Rain Dance by Herbie Hancock doesn't sound as if it was made by a group of jazz musicians in 1971

gmoney

What I Am by Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians had mid 90s production in 1988.

phantom_power

A lot of Renegade Soundwave stuff sounds ahead of its time. Transworld Siren could have come out last week without anyone raising an eyebrow

Always thought this track from a mid-'70s Neopolitan opera sounds proto-all kinds of things, not to mention being just the kind of primal communal racket I love.  I believe the Boredoms sister band OOIOO covered it, which is just the perfect match.

This album's prevalent use of the Roland TB-303 makes it sound like acid house years before the genre existed.

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

Peace Frog by The Doors was recorded in 1969, but sounds exactly like a baggy/indie dance song from the early '90s.

Dunno if it sounds necessarily ahead of its time as such but Talking Heads 'Once in a Lifetime' sounds fresh and timeless some 36 years on.

Dr Rock

I've been listening to a lot of (Noosha) Fox recently, and they seem quite ahead of their time. They didn't really fit in anywhere during their career but would have had more of an audience by the early 80s, or have fitted into an alternative/indiepop crossover genre type affair.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HMKguovcqw (1976)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlCKgdVOXcI (although that is an early 80s b-side to be fair)

They're up for a critical re-evaluation anyway.

Yeah, I've always thought this. As does The Journey by The Small Faces from Ogden's Nut Gone Flake.

Also, this 1968 single by The Factory sounds exactly like The Stone Roses.

Song of a Baker by Small Faces sounds like mid-1990's Britpop. It was indeed covered by Ocean Colour Scene and there was very little to suggest that it wasn't an original work if you weren't in the know.

Surely it being a brilliant song would have raised a few suspicions.

Definitely, and vaguely like the theme from the Rockford Files in places.

I first heard David Bowie's 'Sound & Vision' around 1990 and thought its prominent drum pattern sounded very similar to the Soul II Soul beat popular at the time. Production wise it was clearly late 70s/early 80s but that beat seemed weirdly out of place.

Similarly, I thought PiL's 'Public Image' was from the mid 80s at first due to the exploding snare sound.

Always thought that The Four Seasons Beggin' (with the exception of perhaps the intro) could pass for something much more contemporary than 1967.

Similarly, The Night, from 1972 almost sounds like contemporary R & B in places in its bassline and rhythm.  Particularly the bit from about 0.11 when the drums come in.  Frankie Valli's lead vocal style is the main thing which places it in an earlier era, I suppose.

True of a lot of their stuff until they released Little Creatures which couldn't sound more like 1985.

Super Freak by Rick James sounds to me like it's from later than 81, but this may just be the link with MCHammer having sunk in too far.

This William Orbit song from 1993 sounds super fresh today. Bit late for disco and early for house but for what is normally an electro song it sounds like nothing else. Prepare to Energize:

I can never believe Walking in Sunshine isn't early 1990s

Came here to post that. Hadn't even heard it until the Madcon cover came out in 2007 and was astonished when I checked out Frankie's version just how fresh it sounds.

I'd say the additional rapping and scratching has dated the 12 year old cover far worse than the original.
