Last night had had a great moment of turning on the TV late and finding this fascinating documentary from 1980. It's about garlic or as one guy in the show calls it "italian marijuana", although it comes from siberia. Garlic in history, garlic in religion, garlic in mythology, garlic in cults and of course garlic in food. It's full of interesting tidbits such as the first documented strike was over a garlic shortage in Egypt when pyramid builders refused to work. The film maker, Les Blank, calls garlic 'a benevolent imperialist' because it has invaded almost all forms of cooking buts adds to it.

here are some reviews

The film has a socialist undertone and finishes by showing mexican migrant workers in California.

So, has anyone else seen this film and would care to discuss or discuss garlic in general.

I can certainly relate to the 'Italian Marijuana' context.  marinades = garlic.

I've heard that Chris Morris loves garlic too.
