I haven't listened to anything since Before Today because I assumed it wasn't as good as the unlistenable stuff. He peaked for me with Among Dreams and For Kate, I Wait. I did enjoy Round And Round but I assumed it was all too knowing now. I'll listen to the new one, I love the cover and title.

If you've not heard Geneva Jacuzzi I recommend checking her out. Like Ariel Pink, tracking down her stuff can be quite hard (i.e. it's not all on Spotify).

Here's some classics:
Clothes on the Bed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC5KquQ64Jw
Love Caboose https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2NQByp791c
Bad Moods https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pypklJ3rcM
Do I Sad https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIQ-T_8yD9c

And a couple from the recent album which is on Spotify:
Cannibal Babies https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJ1w2QhjuHA
Casket https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZuE7taCErI

BlodwynPig

Her earlier stuff is a bit boring, but I have to say that those two tracks you posted from Technophilia are damn great and I find the video for Cannibal babies a bit too sexy.

I didn't find her scary (apart from her theatrics on stage). She just seemed a bit standoffish - but I realized after that I had mistakingly butted into a conversation between her and some hipster fanboy, so maybe it was justified.

If you're in need of a chuckle, I can recommend Noel Gallagher's Quietus Favourite LPs thing. He picks a Who best of.

The early "proper band" albums, bar a couple of tracks such as Fright Night (Nevermore), are largely forgettable, though.

I am quite shocked to hear this. I adore Before Today, there's very little I don't enjoy on that record.

'Beverly Kills' off Before Today is for me the apex of that 'Hall and Oates vinyl left out in the rain' aesthetic he was messing around with back then. And 'Round And Round' is just so obviously a stormer, the fuckin size of the chorus on that thing.

Are the all bonus tracks doing the rounds yet?  I have a not-great vinyl rip of Ode To The Goat and that other Ween-like thing is tacked onto the album on Spotify.

Head Gardener

this picture disc has the extra tracks - if I get a rip I will post a link

Thanks a bunch for these HG! I can't tell if Night-time is Great is an edited version of the same track from Ariel's old YaS DuDette album but from the sound quality all of these tracks seem like vintage AP rather than new recordings.  Lil' Birdie Told Me is excellent!

PaulTMA

yasss thank you.  are there any purely digital versions officially released of these tracks?  either way, thanx!

Head Gardener

I downloaded the official album through the card insert but unfortunately it didn't include these 12" tracks

I got those too, were marked as a vinyl rip.  Different source.  Are yours from a CD though?  It was some "bro" on mauspace

alan nagsworth

Got mine off Redacted (the what.cd rebirth), there's a CD and a vinyl rip, I opted for the latter.

anyone get any of the reissues? Worn Copy & The Doldrums showed up this week and waiting on House Arrest. nothing new but a really job with the packages. I'm sure hardcores who had the CD-Rs with alternative tracklists will have a moan but it's a good legacy-cementing move.

Egyptian Feast

I've been getting them all as they've come out. The albums I already loved - Worn Copy and House Arrest - have only had a couple of plays, but they sound great and some of the others have been revelations. I never really 'got' The Doldrums as a whole album and didn't understand why it was so highly rated in his back catalogue, but I like this version a hell of a lot more than the old CD, so out of the current batch that's getting the most plays.

I'd only heard Lover Boy previously as an MP3 download in an alternative version with some songs that ended up on Worn Copy. I thought it was crap then, but I absolutely rinsed the reissue earlier this year. That's probably been the one I've enjoyed the most so far.

The new rarities comp Oddities Sodomies Vol 2 is excellent too, if you haven't caught that yet. I didn't get into Underground though. I like a lot of the songs when they appear on shuffle but I couldn't get lost in the full album like his later work. He hadn't chanced upon the 'broken radio picking up oldies stations from another dimension' style yet, so it's a bit too primitive. A hell of a lot more listenable than the other pre-ashram album I've got, Thrash and Burn,  which, as the cover suggests, stinks.

PaulTMA

Probably the best remastering results I've ever heard, although it probably wasn't too difficult as the original issues were such a mess - as he's now admitted himself, he was clueless about how to transfer the master tapes to computer 20-odd years ago, and its reduced-quality digital versions were folded to mono without him even realising.  These were then mastered to best of someone else's ability, resulting in even more detail getting lost.  The original commercial release of Worn Copy came from a mp3-sourced CD-R...  I had no idea this was why the versions of these albums that had previously been circulating sounded the way they did - I've read many an online debate over why he was supposedly trying to make such detailed recordings sound so shit - was it deliberate?  All of these new versions are to me, like hearing them all properly for the first time.  I feel I can now appreciate them more as individual albums, rather than what previously appeared to be a bit more like a series of compilations spanning a specific time period.  I mean, I always liked the early stuff and had my favourites, but it's now apparent that my overall enjoyment (and often ability to really become familiarised with certain songs, despite listening to them all often over nearly a decade) was greatly impaired by the terrible sound that they ended up with.  Thank god the person from Mexican Summer who oversaw and talked him into doing this series took the opportunity.  Bloody good job well done.

sevendaughters

Good point that, Paul. You can properly start to hear them as intentional products rather than "degraded songs". I think you can hear how The Doldrums and Worn Copy are actually different by design too. Also given 20 years of chillwave turning into smooth music for Netflix films, you can really see how this isn't some retromania exercise and actually some inventive and unique songwriting.

I'm a massive fan of pretty much everything Pink has put out but The Doldrums will always be #1 for me as it conjures up such an incredibly unique and twisted vibe. I also enjoy that it was allegedly recorded using a guitar with only three strings.

I'm going to do my ranking after this post where I say the House Arrest remaster came and it is great, probably the best upgrading of the source material given that it is probably the most nakedly pop record of his early run.

Anyway I'd go

Worn Copy
The Doldrums
House Arrest
Dedicated To Bobby Jameson
Before Today
Mature Themes
Pom-Pom
Yas Dudette
Scared Famous/FF>>
Loverboy
Underground
Ku Klux Glam
Thrash and Burn

p much everything from Scared Famous up is great
