I might have been in a slightly sleepy haze when I listened to the Lou Sanders one, but I thought she was terrible. It felt like she kept trying to have a go at Herring, but kept failing and it all just felt very awkward.

I've enjoyed nearly all the others of the new series so far, and surprised myself by really enjoying the Ross Noble one! And! The bonus Toby Hadoke, Manchester one was very enjoyable, even though I fucking hate Doctor Who.

Herring seemed to be losing his shit over Glenn Wool, who seems like a nice enough dude, but .... nyyyeeeaaahhh... Is he really that funny? I saw him live in 2008 and it was decent, but I haven't seen him do anything particularly good, since then.

I through the the Glenn Wool one was pretty good. He is someone I have seen live and there is a lot of talk about what makes comedy and comedians work whilst not being as 'In awe' as he was with Reg D.

Was looking forward to the Alice Lowe one as I think her work is ace, but it was pretty lacklustre.

Also not sure the beers beforehand/during is a good idea when both host and guest are clearly knackered. Felt like listening to a conversation between two colleagues who don't really know each other having a pint after work.

I honestly think that when people get that vibe, they should check the video version of the podcast before they reach a conclusion.

Although the Stephen Merchant pod became much more fraught and spiky when I saw it on vid.  Which is actually great.  Herring's mischievous habit of sneaking in awkward truths is something he's really useful for.  Like telling David Mitchell that Upstart Crow sounded shit (the wording was better in the actual episode), knocking the second series of Extras, and something similar in the Louis Theroux ep (forget what, but it was funny).  Usually yields some of my biggest laughs.  It's the impish glee as he says that stuff.

Beyond parody now, ol Rich.

Will still listen to a bit though, I'm locked into this toxic relationship by now.

I've been expecting him to do a podcast about his children and pets for some time now, in many ways this is an exciting surprise.

Ironically it could have been quite funny, as faux On The Hour / The Day Today material.

Some reviews of Emergency Questions from Amazon:

My wife and I hadn't spoken to each other in years. 1001 Emergency Questions has opened up all sorts of conversational avenues for us. Damn you Richard Herring!

I'm giving it 4 stars because I was able to get this at the ridiculous price of £9.35 when Herring himself was flogging it the other night at his RHLSTP EIAMDT gig for a whole ten English pounds. Sort yourself out Amazon, that's 65p Rich's kids could have spent on a Pot Noodle (too gorgeous).

An absolute mantlepiece - the best book I've ever read. If Jane Austen were a 51 year old man, and was Richard Herring rather than Jane Austen, then she would have written this book.
Amazon Customer

Richard Herring or as probably known by his friends as Dick Fish, is an absolute legend.

Astoundingly unfunny.

Watching the lates stilted one with an annoying American woman and his wife and someone else, who have done a handful of podcasts apparently. I find it surprising Catie Wilkins has been going out with Herring for over a decade and there's at least one of his ten stories that she apparently hadn't heard.

I saw the title and immediately decided not to bother. What is it, "Drunk Women Solve Crimes" or something? Sounds appalling. I doubt he'd have had them on, or even heard of them, if his wife wasn't one of them.

Mango Chimes

It's worth watching for the robot question about halfway in.

Certainly that last followup question to it, which I really laughed at.

There's already a live episode of that Drunk Women Crime podcast advertised - even though it has only been going for a few weeks.
I always thought live pods happened due to the popularity of the show, rather than start a pod SO it can be a live show. Seems a bit lazy and cynical.

Any chance of a direct link to that bit? Really can't be arsed to watch the whole thing just because one bit of it is good.

Is it at a podcast festival or are they doing a specific live show? Because I'm more forgiving if it's a podcast festival where they're just recording a regular ep in front of an audience, everyone uses that as a way to promote their show, but if they're trying to sell live shows based on the name already then fuck that.

Haven't watched it yet but Herring is apparently on the new series of House of Games.

I said pretty much the same thing a few weeks ago and was instantly worried I was just being a misogynistic crank, so pleased it's not just me ( who is a misogynistic crank).

Cynical as in combining other lucrative enterprises they've noticed, Drunk Histories and the boom in true crime podcasts.  Listening to their show you never get the impression it is their own long standing passion but rather what they have calculated to be successful.  Throw in the Herring leg up and it all feels very odd.

My Dad Wrote a Porno has a lot to answer for, I reckon.

I quite enjoyed the Drunk Women Solving Crimes one, his wife's much funnier than he is and the other two were good value as well.

In one episode he gave the answer "egg", but sadly failed to add "like a bird's egg".

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

Listening to the Drunk Women Solving Crimes episode, which is amiable enough. I did however LOL at this exchange.

"It must be difficult starting out in podcasting when you're married to the greatest podcaster in the world?"

"I am married to Adam Buxton, yes."

You asked for that, Rich.

Of the three 'drunk women' I definitely found Hannah to be the most quick-witted, with the best sense of timing. The American, not so much.

olliebean

TBH, any podcast or show with the word "Drunk" in the title is immediately going to put me off. I think "Drunk History" was the first. Getting inebriated and hoping you say something funny instead of actually writing some jokes.

Cue someone telling me that's not actually what the drunk crime solving women is, I suppose...

Guffawed out loud (GOL'd) at this. Cheers!

Skipped through that Stone Clearing thing. Just... Sigh.

If he had any interesting opinions about well, anything at all, outside of his comedy career, then I'd be vaguely interested. For example, compare this to Limmy's Live Streams, where at least once, I've heard him take a topical celebrity news story and then extract it out into world of Grand Theft Auto, where it became a mixture of gameplay, satire and trolling: I'm on board for giving up a couple of hours of my time to shit like that, if I feel there is some genuine wit and substance to it, which with Limmy, there always is. Or Adam Buxton playing Ken Korda, doing a commentary over an episode of The Priory (as discussed in the recent podcast with him and Simon Pegg).

Then consider Herring's offering at silly-joke-taken-to-extremes. ...

His poor wife.
