That looks typically mad and brilliant. Delighted to see that he's brought that ghost writer back. There was something very intriguing about that guy.

The taxi driver was from an earlier episode too.

Hmm, I think I'm gonna have to rewatch the last 3 seasons going by that trailer. Not that that's a bad thing, mind.

You should do that.

I've been doing that, and it's really interesting seeing the recurring participants.  I initially thought that Brian Wolfe was a bit of a dick towards Nathan (not necessarily without reason), but with hindsight his comments - "Wizard of loneliness" - come across with a bit of warmth.  I don't mind that they probably scripted that bit.  I also didn't know this:

QuoteAn appearance in the eighth episode of the show's first season by private investigator Brian Wolfe led to Wolfe getting his own reality series on Investigation Discovery, Cry Wolfe. This was referenced on Nathan for You on the eighth episode of the second season, when Nathan tried to get a similar reality TV deal for a security guard who had also appeared in season one.

Anyone seen Cry Wolfe?  I reckon it's shit.

amputeeporn

I love the PI. Me and Mrs amputeeporn were cracking up the other day remembering his glamour vs porn argument that Nathan  finally wins at the end of his second(?) appearance.

Probably just my memory playing tricks on me, but I just rewatched the last episode of Season 2 - Doinkit toy / No-sharing cinema / Simon Sees - and I have absolutely no memory of seeing the cinema segment before.

I remember the episode was leaked ahead of broadcast, I don't suppose there's a chance I've just watched a different version? It's unusual for me to so comprehensively forget something I've seen.

Interesting interview with Nathan in the latest Rolling Stone: http://www.rollingstone.com/tv/features/nathan-fielder-how-the-cult-comedian-rules-the-outer-limits-of-awkward-w501360

Best bit:

QuoteFielder showed me the finale, a two-hour episode that makes even The Hero seem simple by comparison. I agreed to not divulge any details, but I can say it's the most hilarious, shocking and oddly endearing thing he's ever done.

I still think The Hero is one of the most simultaneously astonishing, emotional and ludicrous pieces of television I've ever witnessed, so that certainly has me chomping at the bit.

Fucking bang up for that. Imagine the bizarre twists upon twists they could manage in 2 hours.

This is a blazing article on the tricksy ethics of Nathan For You by Emma Healey:
https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/missed-connections-how-to-tell-if-nathan-for-you-is-for-you/

(who I've just discovered wrote the article about the Louie C.K. allegations that I also linked a couple of days ago - an interesting serendipity since she seems like a relatively obscure, though obviously terribly good, essayist)

Do we not think that the two-hour special is the Bill Gates impersonator episode? It takes up a lot of time in the trailer and looks like it was filmed on a big budget...

Steven

I showed a load of Nathan For You episodes to a friend, and she said Nathan is obviously gay.

Then when I told her he was into magic she said "Definitely, then."

I've thought that for a while. Though the article linked above mentions him getting divorced in 2014 (presumably from a woman) and refers to his current partner as 'she', but that could be the author's guesswork as she says that Nathan won't talk about them. I think I like the idea that he's gay as it puts a bit of difference between him and his character and makes his interactions with women feel less awkward to watch. If he was genuinely attracted to the actress from The Gift Shop, for example, then I don't know how he could stand to do that epilogue with her where he admits to enjoying the kiss.

EDIT: Though on the subject of the photo, I'm straight and you could definitely find similar pics of me from the same age.

I'd assumed that would form part of the hour-long Nathan For You Celebration episode where he apparently revisits characters from previous seasons to see how they're getting on. I think the finale will be an event in its own right (and probably something to do with the Elon Musk stuff that "got way out of hand").

Artemis

Totally psyched for this. I've been going over the last three seasons again and it's just so wonderfully layered. Absurdly convoluted ways around problems that didn't need to exist in the first place. I love the recurrence of characters as well.

I'm often torn as to the authenticity of this show, though. I know Nathan's said there's a lot of material, including entire projects, that never see the light of day because someone twigs half way through, or it doesn't go in the right direction, but I do sense people are playing along sometimes. Particularly when it comes to repeat characters. Surely Brian Wolfe knows exactly what's going on but he's popped up a few times. So that does make me wonder. But the whole thing is filmed so well and executed with just the right amount of mockery and humanity, I don't find that oppressive.

I'm sure he is playing along, to the extent that he understands his role on the show and relishes it. He probably likes the way he comes across.

I'm not sure about Bill Gates man though. He surely realises by now that his 'talents' are being deployed ironically. Same with the ghostwriter guy who seems to be returning, unless he never bothered to watch his episode.

Santa man probably just does it for the money.

I'm not sure with Nathan, he's so gawky and awkward it can point towards him being uncomfortable/confused with his sexuality, or on some level of the autistic spectrum.

Either way, I wouldn't put too much faith in the indefatigability of my friend's Gaydar, the bloke she married turned out to be a gay-bo.

Dunno why you all think someone being socially awkward is a gay trait. Bizarre.

BritishHobo

I think with Brian Wolfe it's probably noteworthy that his attitude and behaviour towards Nathan has gone from bewildered mocking in the first season ("You're like the Wizard of Loneliness.") to just a normal, friendly dynamic in later seasons, where they often jus chat. That must come from Wolfe knowing he's ultimately talking to a character.

I didn't say it was a gay trait, I said it can be a trait of being repressed or confused about your sexuality, but some milder forms of autism seem to have a similar effect on some people. Nathan is also playing a socially awkward character whether an exaggeration of himself or not, so it's all a bit of a blur.

15 Things We Learned Hanging Out With Nathan

Apologies if that's the same Rolling Stone article as posted a while back. Worth a gander, anyway!

EDIT - Oh no, seems to be a new one

There's an interview with Nathan on the latest Bill Simmons Podcast:

Not listened myself yet, so can't comment on the quality.

There's some sort of one-hour special on tonight at 10 pm EST before the new season starts next week.

And Nathan has been heavily promoting it on the social medias, so hopefully there's some new bits

I know gay mathematicians and he is a bit like one of those, in support of Steven's remarks.

I'd probably put a bet on him *not* being gay, tho.

newbridge

Loving this so far.

"Oh, a little kiss..."

newbridge

"No, isn't that a vagina hole."

"... It could be."
