It's often used as a term of abuse. There plenty of terms that are more neutral in their connotations.

Thank you for pointing that out. I doubt he meant anything bad by it. Some people just don't realise how they come across.

Really amazing. Haven't been this compelled to organise my thoughts on something in a while even though my words can't really do it justice - it really took me by surprise that there's just so much you can read into this. It seems almost perfectly crafted. Throughout the whole series we have those little insights into the Nathan character's loneliness and it's played as a just a funny recurring joke, and now we get something that sort of analyses the whole conceit of the show - this character that Fielder has played in and out of the show, where we're not quite sure how much is exaggerated, who tries to deceive but find connection with these odd people. Like he said, it's the blurring of the artificial and the real.

From that painfully long phonecall, how much of Bill's love for Frances was artificial, and is he still pursuing that idealised relationship by going on to date the actress who played his lover? Was this whole thing made up, bearing in mind so much of it ties in almost too conveniently with the theme of distorting reality, and that we had a whole episode, or really a whole TV show, dedicated to Nathan manufacturing a perfect story? That last shot with the escort, who pretends to care while blatantly setting her prices for each visit, with Nathan so blatantly faking this emotional scene... there's so much to think about with this. What a great finale.

I agree and think you might even be underselling how beautiful and perfect that finale was. It wrapped up Nathan's insecurities and personality faults so perfectly. His self delusion is palpable at the end, and that's been a very strong theme throughout the 4 seasons.

We just finished watching this. Incredible. He really worked all possible aspects of fourth wall breaking he could. Gecko was convinced they were all actors. I don't think they were.

The final lines:

'Then why are we doing this?'
'Because you want to film something.'
'Actually there's a cool drone shot we could do.'

Perfection. It could be Waiting for Godot.

I've been saving season 4 up, ready to treat myself when I needed a lift, and have just watched the Uber episode.

It's not often I cry laughing, let alone while watching something by myself, but the 'wedding' scene has just destroyed me. I feel absolutely gleeful as a result of that episode. Amazing.

pancreas

Well, you're in for a treat. The last episode is just sublime. I really think the closest thing I can think of is Waiting for Godot.

Crabwalk

I'm trying to ration myself as it's so long between series. The 'celebration' episode was a bit of a dud, but the three proper episodes I've seen so far have been escalating in audacity and hilarity. The 'big' episodes haven't been the strongest for me in the past, but you've certainly whetted my appetite for the finale this time.

Ha, I had forgotten about that scene and thought you had the episodes mixed up for a second. Believe it or not but there's an (arguably) even better wedding storyline in the next episode.

Errol Morris wrote this piece about "Finding Frances" in The New Yorker that might be worth reading:

Nathan going to great lengths to warn people about the dangers of hacking the Emmy awards.

Ha, thanks for that, really enjoyed it.

Sad news that Judge Anthony Filosa has died: https://twitter.com/nathanfielder/status/1018984324249485312. Nice to know that he enjoyed his time on the show and I bet he probably laughed his ass off at it.

In other shitty news, Nathan For You didn't get nominated for any Emmys, so fuck them thoroughly. Nominating Drunk History and Tracey Ullman's Show is just taking the piss though.

garbed_attic

I'm just thinking about 'Finding Frances' again now. I think it may well be my favourite episode of any television show I've ever seen.

I have to rewatch it at some point - only seen it the once. I can't recall a show every bringing out such a reaction in me. During the hotel room scene, I actually had to start pacing around the lounge room due to how uncomfortable and unexpected it was.

Re: The Emmys, I mean, we know they aren't an indicator of true quality but it IS ludicrous that something head-and-shoulders above the pack as NFY is didn't get a look-in.

just watched FF on spec. I liked Nathan For You but not a superfan. This was amazing. Blowaway stuff.

Glad you enjoyed it. Check out The Hero from the end of Season 3 if you haven't already had the pleasure. Equally mind-blowing.

newbridge

The Hero is so equally ridiculous and amazing.

Someone in the UK is selling a Summit Ice jacket and with two days to go it's only at £1.04. Frustratingly it's XS size so I'll never fit in to it, but maybe someone on here might be interested: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Summit-Ice-Port-Authority-Softshell-Jacket-with-Hood-XS-Nathan-For-You/263862617169?hash=item3d6f700451:g:PH0AAOSwkShbY0sI

I reckon that would've fit me, but it's up to £35 now so yeah, can't be arsed.

I'd like to know if he thought he'd gone as far is it could go or whether he has something new in the offing. NFY certainly goes out on a high.

Small Man Big Horse

It does sound like it was his own decision, I just hope he comes back with something else sooner rather than later.

buntyman

Has this ever been on British TV?

Utter Shit

Yeah it was on one of the shite channels. Comedy Central I think.

Pseudopath

Ah...bollocks. Obviously gutted that it's the end of the road, but can't complain about the journey and I certainly wouldn't want to have to top that ending.

Here's hoping he's back with something equally profound before too long.

Utter Shit

Is it just me that wasn't too bothered about the deeper stuff? I didn't think the final episode was that great and the tightrope one was one of the weaker ones IMO too...all my favourites are the mad, silly ones. The terrible spooky fun fair, the never-ending gas station scam, the Chinese Dragon hotel trick...that sort of pointless foolishness was what made the show for me.
