That guy who was sitting right down at the front of our section? I noticed the trilby, but didn't clock he was in full NFY cosplay.

He also had "the pink shirt and everything" that made Nathan a figure of fun with that Wolf private detective chap. Shambles.

Small Man Big Horse

What did he say in the Q&A out of interest? Was it just about the episode, or did he discuss other elements of the show?

Ferris

All on the final episode more or less. He wasn't "in character", just his normal slightly awkward self. The questions I remember:

"Did you realize lots of people on twitter find you attractive?" which he just literally (not figuratively) said "ok, next question" because that is a big pile of nothing.

"Do you still keep in touch with Bill?" which yeah, they email occasionally, same as Staci. Bill is still out in California (not Arkansas where his family is) so the production staff treat him like a bit of a distant uncle and check in on him from time to time.

"Ways the show has changed" the staff tried to get everyone coming away from the show with a positive experience, even if they were the butt of the joke at times. They managed it (which is nice) but didn't have that mentality in the first season so there were a couple of bits that are tough to watch.

"Did Bill and what's her name end up happily ever after" which I think completely missed the point of the story. It didn't need to be the definitive end, it just needed to show Bill moving on with his life romantically, which he did. (For the record, they didn't end up together).

"Bits that were cut from Finding Frances" a few that I forget, but the episode wasn't designed to be the finale so they were filming hours of footage and after a while it became apparent this could be a lot different than a regular episode so they had to recut it from 20 minutes to 90 minutes on the hoof. The scene I remember them cutting that sounded great was the computer ageing guy trying to get in on the show and offering to do the music, and he played Nathan a song on his keyboard with Nathan stony faced. Apparently the shot of him unloading his keyboard in the hotel is still in the episode.

"You're a bit awkward - how do you get people to open up so much to you on the show" (and I'm paraphrasing heavily because this question took like 10 minutes to ask with lots of rambling) - having a camera crew. People do things on camera they wouldn't do in real life. They're not doing it because he's super charismatic, but he's good at leaving spaces and making other people feel like they need to fill them.

I'm amazed I remembered that much, actually! Beer must be good for memory.

Small Man Big Horse

Thank you for that, it was really interesting and I appreciate your typing all of that out good sir.

My copy of "THE MOVEMENT" arrived in the mail today.

Chapter Nine is titled "Baboons".

I hope you like it, I enjoyed it enormously, for me it's just the right length and doesn't stretch the joke out too far.

Why do I always get my hopes up when this thread gets bumped? Christ...I miss this show.

Ferris

Sorry, I shouldn't have bumped it really because it's so old.

I also got a Summit I've tshirt during lockdown, and it's lovely. Very nice cotton material. Anyway. Sorry again.

FTFY

Sorry for those who have already seen this in the "How to with John Wilson" thread, but cross-posting this video here for the Nathanheads in the hope of getting more eyes on Season 1 of the brilliant How to with John Wilson.

... Anyway. Sorry again.

... I finally watched all of this. Was binging Seasons 1, 2 & 3, but slowed down with 4. Imagine my absolute delight, when I put on S4 E7 this evening, only to discover it was feature length!

... And my God it was amazing. Of course I'm a big fruit, so I crying at that last scene with Bill meeting what's her face and then Nathan just sitting with Maci. Seemed especially poignant given lockdown / being separated from people we love etc.

I then realised I had skipped S4 E5, but I'm saving that for tomorrow.
Then I think I'll rewatch it all again. I might buy the boxset as well.
I love this show so much.

Curious to find out what the other pilot is, but I also loved How To with John Wilson.

Shit this good is so fucking life affirming and uplifting! Fucking loved it.

Ferris

These change based on if you have the DVD vs iTunes (and if you count the retrospective as episode 1 of S4 or a separate thing etc) but I think S4E5 is "Shipping Logistics Company" according to google.

If so, it's terrific - a real piece of N4Y lore. You are in for a treat.

^took me far too long to get that. Lost my edge.

Mobius

Rewatched all over this over the last week and had forgotten just how hilarious and creative and unlike anything else the show is. Just amazing stuff really. Must be so much work to put it all together.

Ferris

I noticed on a recent rewatch that "Klein's disease" (a nonsense condition) is a running gag throughout the show.

The amount of effort and attention to detail that went into making it is seriously impressive.

It's Shipping Logistics Company one, which I am still to watch!

I don't want to build it up too much, but it is my favourite one of the run. Enjoy!

McFlymo

That was lots of fun!

I'm likely to change my mind when I rewatch it all again, but at the moment my favourite episode is Smokers Allowed (S3 E5). The amount of effort to recreate the exact same eighty minutes of bar activity with actors was hilarious. It seemed kinda poignant and cool when he made the girl say, "I love you" to him over and over again*, against the backdrop of the episode being about recreating "a slice of life", I found that quite touching. It wasn't the funniest episode, but I loved that it was doing that slightly wanky, meta contextualising of the reality / performance boundary, but was able to undermine it with Ellen the bar owner's criticism at the end: "It was a little boring..."
Perfect.

* although, Nathan's general creepiness around women throughout all four seasons did make me uncomfortable at times.**

** although his relationship with Maci in Finding Frances felt like a great pay off to all of that.

Just noticed this on Youtube! Posted only yesterday on Comedy Central's YT channel.
Could they be building up interest in Nathan's newest venture?

I had never seen the parts where Nathan mocked Brian Wolfe's Boston accent, or where he confronted him with the porn magazines before. Where these exclusive to the DVD boxset?

Ferris

I like the episodes where the show is throwing out good idea after good idea, and casually casting off stuff that a lesser show would try and build a full episode from like
Spoiler alert
hiring the guy for the fake Shell marketing job (including little Shell gold cart ride to the "interview") then having him apologize to the fake band, which was essentially an entire side story to try and get them to play that song that Nathan wrote
[close]
. Even better is when
Spoiler alert
and idea like Nathan's song being rejected (which was always going to happen) and then having him double down and take things further and further - there's a genuine feeling of not knowing where on earth it's going to go next and having to just trust it will be funny
[close]
, and that's really refreshing for a comedy show.

Didn't think it was worth starting a new thread for this, but just to say that all 4 seasons of Nathan For You have just gone up on Amazon Prime if anyone's interested.

Oh amazing, thanks for the heads up!
