Gregory's Girl

One of the late Barry Norman's favourite films ever. And my late mum's. And mine. I'm still alive though. After mentioning it on another thread. I'm very tempted to watch it again tonight. It just has so many great bits. Any other fans? Or haters? I'd like to know either way.

Yeah, I can see how watching films at school can put you off. For some reason when we were about 14, my year was treated to a screening of The Wild Geese. At a convent school. That sort of thing would make the tabloids nowadays. Along with the story about Gloria Foreignsurname going topless on the school field. A den of iniquity that place was.

I watched it again a couple of years ago and it wasn't quite as good as I remember. It's very slight. But some great bits. My favourite is when he's sloping around the schoolyard and those teachers see him from the window and make some disparaging comment about what a clown he is.

I'm a big fan of Bill Forsyth's work. Gregory's Girl, Local Hero and Comfort and Joy are pitch perfect for me and you can see the genesis of it all in That Sinking Feeling. Real feel good stuff, and I was a huge Altered Images fan too.

It's a shame Gregory's 2 Girls wasn't great although entertaining enough.

Didn't they knock down the Cumbernauld school it was filmed in a couple of years ago?

Haven't seen it for years, would love to give it another watch. I remember seeing 'That Sinking Feeling' on one of its rare TV outings ages ago, really liked that too.

A good friend of mine went to this school and was there while they were filming. Some of his pals are extras in the film.

It's got some nice moments and is definitely a Forsyth film in style. It's his 'american' films that really haven't seemed to have worked. In fact I've not actually seen Housekeeping, Breaking In or Being Human.

Gregory's Girl is a strange one. I remember watching it in secondary school at the age of 13, and taking a thorough dislike to it. I'd probably be able to recognise it's poignancy today as opposed to the immature 13 year old I was back then.

It almost certainly would be far superior to what I remember, especially considering that some years after I watched Local Hero. That is undeniably one of the best films ever made and in my top 3 favourite films of all time. Beautiful film without being sentimental.

Seen part of Comfort & Joy which I really enjoyed too. I recognise the genius of Bill Forsyth today so it's a definite one to re-watch.

 There was a novelization that my local library had - this was in the early 90s - so I ended up watching the film when shown one afternoon on BBC2 as a result. I don't know that many people who seem to have seen it,which is a real shame.

I love the fact that all of Gregory's friends are so into their hobbies. Cooking boy is my favourite.

Great opening scene. The first time I ever saw GG was on a very rare cinema visit with both parents (a double bill with Chariots Of Fire) and for a few seconds I was cringing with embarrassment in the way that only a self-conscious 15-year-old boy can. But luckily mum and dad laughed so I relaxed.

That Sinking Feeling is really good given it's a first film shot on a shoestring with lads from the youth theatre.
