Number 32 is Manos: The Hands of Fate.  Not a film you'd expect to see on a best list anywhere.

Someone could sample Torgo's theme, though.

Do de do de do do do do, do de do de do do do do, etc.

I too am in for a penny. Been over ten years since i recorded my album and 6 since my last demo, but bought some new gear recently and this could be a fun way of getting back into it. I would be happy either to produce an individual piece fitting a concept or a track to be layered onto a group effort.

Avril Lavigne

I'd like to get involved for sure, it's been too long since I last contributed to this kind of project.

ArtParrott

I'm keen to contribute something too. Sounds like fun (hopefully I'll still be saying that when I'm finishing something).

People who've said they're in, so far:

That's a good number, so far; hopefully with more coming in.

One of the things that propelled the other albums to unimagined heights was contributors catching a glimpse of other contributors work. In previous times we did this via a chinese whisper procedure, where you got to hear the track that was to precede or follow your own. It definitely helped to make each track run smoothly from one to the other and probably helped to raise the general standard as people glimpsed how good the other track was.

As we're all going to start at the same time on this project, perhaps we should make a rule that we let people whose track precedes and follows our own get to hear one another.

And track order will be pulled out of a hat once everybody who's in has put their names forward. The film will have to be subdivided into the require number of parts. Perhaps we will just divide it brutally by time intervals or maybe dramatically by changes in scene (which would make some sections longer than others). Either way, the goal is not to make a blow by blow soundtrack for the film (although you can do this if you wish), just to be inspired by the film to do you piece in the form/time that suits you.

NoSleep

Anyone got ideas for the film we'll use? I have a suggestion (because I want to watch the film anyway): Aelita: Queen Of Mars (1924, silent, USSR), by the looks of it an early and stylish sci-fi classic.

I wonder if Beagle 2 wants to stick with Invasion Of The Bee Girls, for which one of the reviews on archive.org says, "The plot is a porn film plot. No question about that. This is like watching a 70's porn film with the sex scenes edited out for general commercial release, the difference is the acting is better in this."?

Phil_A

Count me in as well, I could do with a project to focus on at the moment.

If I can recreate even a third of that magic I'll be thrilled.

Haha!

I don't have time to research anything so more than happy to let others choose the fillum. I'm just delighted to have finally found a way to satiate my bee fetish.

Edit: It would make sense to divide by ends of scenes rather than split it equals pequals, but again, I don't have the time to do that, so it would take a volunteer to do the legwork.

NoSleep

Just finished viewing Aelita and must say it's one of the best silent films I've ever watched. I'd definitely put it forward as my film candidate for the album (and chop it up into little pieces for individual tracks).

Maybe some more of you could put some other candidates forward (and, likewise, chop it into little bits).

Thinking about it, maybe we should hold on the chopping until we know how many of us are onboard.

Phil_A

Do we have to stick to one film, necessarily? Would it be an idea to decide on a list of films and then randomly assign them to contributors, or would that just over-complicate things?

NoSleep

It would, kind of, as we're attempting to find a way to make it work as a whole (again).

Got an idea about how what you're saying could work?

Any ideas for a film?

Phil_A

Well I don't know, it was only a suggestion. I thought we were still at the "throwing out ideas" stage.

NoSleep

We are, I was just fleshing the film idea out a bit to see how it might work.

the

What's currently the central idea?

- we all watch pieces of a film, or a whole film*?
- is the film going to be silent, or not?
- if it is silent, will there be ANY audio source material for this album?

* Not trying to be an obstacle, and I realise I'm probably in a minority of one here, but I don't really enjoy watching dramatic films or find them inspiring

NoSleep

You're free to make suggestions on how it all works.

We, preferably, all watch one film; or, in your case, the bit you are forced to watch (that was my idea). We each use a portion of the film allocated (names out of a hat for order) as inspiration for your track.

We have yet to choose which film and the only two contenders, so far, include one silent film and one 70's talkie.

Let's get some more suggestions for films, please. And/or more ideas for how it's going to work.

Dr Syntax Head

I really don't mind what film we use at all. It'll be a nice challenge and a break from my other work at the moment.

Edit. The darker and weirder the film is better for me though.

OK. Maybe I was wrong-footed a bit by the previous HHTs (which I didn't participate in) - I was just under the impression that there'd be some nibbles of audio material to start from. Personally I'd work better with that kind of source over 'the mood of a film' or loads of audio from one. (Some people do seem keen on the film idea though, so I don't want to drag the set-up off somewhere else if it's working for literally everyone else.)

In keeping with Beagle 2's original suggestion, my suggestion would be something short and varied to work from (sonically, emotionally and conceptually). Such as a randomly-selected ad break or something.

NoSleep

Personally I avoid ads, nor find them inspirational to the same degree that you regard whole movies. See what others think and I'll go along with whatever.

Nor do I want to feel obliged to use sampling (hence the suggestion of a silent movie).

The whole point being that we need a unifying theme to pull the whole project together only as a secondary thought in the process. I think the most important thing, which will be determined by names out of a hat, is the track order (once we know exactly who's in). The most important thing we need to do, I think, is ensure that people whose tracks are adjacent to one another should get an early listen to what one another are doing, in order to make the album flow from track to track (not necessarily segue or blend from track to track, though, so no need to sync tempos, etc). How this occurred on previous albums was that only one track was executed one after the other (with the track just completed forwarded to the next person to follow), which resulted in the whole thing taking well over a year to complete. We're just trying to speed up production by getting everyone working at the same time, but somehow making something that is a whole from the outset.

NoSleep

If we do go with the movie idea, then all that commits anybody to is watching 5 minutes of a film before they start producing their track. If they want to do more, like watch the whole movie for context, or even actually attempt to sync their audio to the film, then that's entirely up to the individual, but there is no commitment to it even being the same length as the section of the movie they're given (they can make their contribution longer or shorter; the film is just a starting point to be used however you wish).

the

I think I'm with you. We each start off basing our track of the section of film we're allocated. Then at some point we pass an excerpt of our WIP track to the two people whose tracks are before and after ours. We will receive similar. And this can then inform how our track should begin and end. Is that sort of the idea?

NoSleep

The sharing of tracks is the important thing, yes. Everything else, whatever we decide, is just icing on the cake (or maybe a raw ingredient).

Dusty Gozongas

Re: the sharing of tracks...

Could we perhaps split the list of participants into those who state a preference for being in the first or second wave?  I obviously wouldn't expect a 50/50 outcome but as a 'less confident' music maker I'd be happy with the chance of getting a feel for it iyswim?

NoSleep

We're going for one wave this time. On previous occasions we had a draw to see who was in the subsequent waves, but this time all there will be is a list from first to last in one go. Hence the idea for sharing adjacent tracks; I can coordinate the sharing if that is easier for everyone so that everyone sends their tracks to me and I send them on to the relevant people.

I've had a thought that this only needs to be a one way street, too. Rather than having to confer with the people before and after you, you only receive the track before yours. Makes sense.

Dusty Gozongas

My 7/10 on the autistic spectrum (undiagnosed) gets in the way sometimes.

It'll be beautiful.

Johnny Textface

Aelita sounds perfect to me. Full buy in?
Other possible solutions to satisfy:
Pick your own bit you want to 'track (length?)
Create a YouTube or Vimeo (or I can do that bit - might be best for contsistency)
Upload back to Web somewhere as a short film - we would need to negotiate the running order maybe, fuck knows.

In order to inspire a 'vibe' or starting point. Could we collaborate on a playlist maybe? Spotify has functionality that allows this obviously. We all add a track that we think fits our idea of what the film could or should sound like.

Errrrrrr. spliff.

Johnny Textface

Other suggestions to bring the tone. Theremin optional?

This seems a bit complex and supposes that our goal is to create a soundtrack for the film, whereas all we want to do it make an album, merely using the film as a springboard. Like I said, just because you end up with, say, a 10 minute piece of film, doesn't mean your track has to be 10 minutes long (although you can do that if it's what you want to do). The film is a minor detail; it's much more important that we allow people who have to follow one another in the track order a glimpse of what the track that precedes theirs sounds like.
Of course we could dispense with that altogether and just say let's all make a track each and then compile it afterwards, but I like the idea of ensuring that everyone has to start from scratch and specially creates a track for this project and that we're moving toward the finished shape of the album from the outset. That's been part of the game on all the previous albums and they have all worked well as album experiences (except for the xmas one, which included tracks that weren't specially made for the project).

QuoteIn order to inspire a 'vibe' or starting point. Could we collaborate on a playlist maybe? Spotify has functionality that allows this obviously. We all add a track that we think fits our idea of what the film could or should sound like.

I'm not keen on anticipating how we're going to make our tracks sound by listening to the work of others. I would say one of the reasons for picking a film as a starting point is precisely because what it presents is inspiration that is something other than music (Just like the Oblique Strategies cards did in a previous project).

So my simple idea was for us to pick a film, chop it up into segments (let's call them 1, 2, 3, 4, etc) randomly assign a segment to each contributor, they watch their segment (and the rest of the film, if they choose), come up with a rough idea for a track. Then they forward their rough track to the person whose segment follows theirs (1 sends to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, etc). We all finish our tracks. You send them all to me and I master the album and publish it on the cookdandbombdcollective Bandcamp site. All monies received on Bandcamp will go either to the upkeep of CaB or CaBRadio (which costs £3.69/month).
