Phil_A and the seemed worried about doing it that way or worried that we were weren't waiting for more suggestions of how to put the album together. I just want to get down and groove, ASAP.

Let's hear some other ideas, or at least some other concrete suggestions of films or video we can use (based on Beagle 2's original idea).

Johnny Textface

Yep. I think the ideas you have put forward are fine for this. Just need to make sure we're all on board and ready to kick it.

gabrielconroy

I prefer NoSleep's approach by far. Use the film as a general mood and aesthetic inspiration and way of binding the tracks together thematically.

I'm not so bothered about hearing the previous person's track first, since I think the film itself will give enough coherence to what we're all doing. This would slow the process down, but maybe it would make the whole album better. I don't know.

Either way, I'd like to get going on this sooner rather than later. As we all know, these tend to take absolutely forever to finish no matter how we approach it, and with 16+ people, it's inevitable there will be lots of holdups.

Petey Pate

Another +1 from me.

I'd be happy to work with whatever film.  I will watch Aelita: Queen Of Mars at some point this week.

ArtParrott

Yeah I'm happy with whats been suggested so far too.

Maybe it doesn't have to be mandatory but if someone is having difficulty getting something off the ground it might help to hear a rough version of someone else's track?

NoSleep

Hearing how the last track before yours ends may be of some help in working out how to begin your own. It's probably of no use to send your track on to the next person if you don't have at least a rough idea of how it ends.

NoSleep

I've been looking for a definitive version of Aelita online and have discovered that it is generally described as being around 113 minutes long. However some of the recently restored versions somehow chop this down to something like 80 minutes. I thought the point of most restoration work was to present films in their original form as they were seen in their time, so I'm puzzled as to what has been removed especially as much as 30 minutes. There is a release online (on YouTube & archive.org) that clocks in at something like the original length of the film so let's go with that (it's also silent, or at least it is here). With 16 of us participating it means we all get about 7 minutes of the film to view. Probably the best way to do this is to give each of you a youtube link that is timestamped to begin at the point where your portion starts. I'll get chopping straight away.

NoSleep

Turned out every 7 minutes are pretty good places to change, didn't have to play around too much at all. So, I'm using this version of the film (1h 51m 31s):

https://youtu.be/6evwta5DQVQ

...and putting timestamps on the url to send each of you once we've determined the order; all you have to do is watch 7 minutes of the film from where it starts for you. I think it's only fair that everyone's names go in the hat (box, actually; always the same box for every album, so far) and are assigned a random portion of the film each. This will determine the track order on the album (part 1 = 1st track... part 16 = last track).

Names going into box to follow...

NoSleep

I suggest we keep the music to ourselves from hereon. No posting of links to your mixes in this thread. If you need to play your track to somebody else, share it with them via pm. By this method the album will be a surprise when we launch it, even for the contributors. We usually have an afternoon/evening on CaB Radio as a launch party event which might even include some skypeing with contributors as well as a first chance to hear the album in full.

When you've completed your tracks, send them to me for compiling and mastering. Preferably I'd like to receive them as 24 bit wav or aiff files @ 44.1kHz. 16 bit is acceptable if you don't have the facility for 24 bit mixes. Other sample rates than 44.1kHz can be accommodated but I will have to sample rate convert these to 44.1kHz; much better to start off how it's all going to end.

NoSleep

So the track order is going to be...

I'll pretend to start work on this once I've finished pretending to work from home.

Avril Lavigne

Thanks NoSleep, I'll watch the whole thing for context sometime soon and then get to work.

I don't suppose it matters if there's  a glaring jar in tone between tracks as ultimately the film will not be viewed in entirety with our soundtrack, will it?

NoSleep

It'll be fine. There's quite a few tones woven throughout the film which can often crop up within a small space of time, so I'm fairly certain the issue will be trying to find a mean to give your piece some backbone. I've got budding detectives, police raids, thievery, black marketeering, jealousy, domestic violence, moping (there's always at least one "haunted twat" in every silent film) and smugness to deal with in my section.

I've watched the shorter edit of the film and its definitely noticeable that scenes are missing.  The last quarter in particular is strangely paced and almost incomprehensible as the story moves too quickly.  If you plan on watching it definitely opt for the longer version.

NoSleep

Just sent a rough version of my track to Phil_A, who follows me on the list. I sent it via https://wetransfer.com/ if anyone is looking for such a service to use.

No arrangement or anything at this point, just a beat and bassline with a bit of extra music to give an idea of the flavour.

Basically send on to the next person on the list when you have the barest idea of how your track is going to sound. I'll pm the stragglers who've yet to reply here tomorrow (or maybe tonight).

Shit fuck I missed this. Barely on here these days. But i havent missed an album yet... if anyone drops out can I be backup please?
