El Unicornio, mang

So has he done a complete 180? Reminds me of a friend of mine in the US who was very far left, into alternative music, lifestyle, etc. really cool guy who I would see at local indie shows in Portland OR, someone who you could name the most obscure band and he'd rattle off a load of info about them. Then he kind of vanished from social media for a while and came back with his long hair cut short, posting pics of himself in hunting gear in his pick up truck and going on about how gay people are all sick child molesters, abortion is evil, Trump is great, etc. His friends list depleted very rapidly. Very sad to see. Might not be the case here but I feel like it must be some kind of underlying mental condition.

I wonder if it isn't a 180 and more of a case of we didn't read closely enough to what was being said. Without getting too deeply into it, his thesis is effectively a long and complicated (and, arguably, not great) tract against the ways in which liberal capitalism enacts control through technology and culture. This culture, he argues, cannot handle anything but positive feedback and banal non-critique. So far I kind of agree with him. It is also pretty clear than Biden and the contemporary centrist movement are the political avatars of that, and I think it is fair to be suspicious of them.

However, I do not understand the mechanisms by which a donation to Trump is a vote against that. I suppose this is the same kind of absolute twaddle thought that led to Lexit thought - we can overturn the status quo! We can re-code institutions! Well...no! No one is offering that! This is basically Big Brain shit that has no practical application.

Like, he posts that papal encyclical against nationalism...and votes for the guy with the nationalist slogans? At some point you have to realise you're either lying to yourself or you are further down the rabbithole than you wished to admit to yourself. Do I think he's a mentaloid hate-spewing MAGAist? Probably not. But he's in bed with them now.

Sad stuff, I've been an immense fan of both of them for like a decade and this news made for quite a personally disappointing start to the year. I also just read today that Ariel Pink has been dropped from his label. No idea how that's going to affect the album I pre-ordered which they had originally scheduled to release later this month :\

Apparently Ariel Pink is an absolute cunt of truly epic proportions. I think a few people were looking for a final reason to sever all ties with him.

hate to be contract lawyer at the vulture meal but Pink had 11 records come out on Mexican Summer, it is more of a 'we won't do any more'.

chveik

it was funny when all the pseuds were wanking themselves silly because the title of his album was a Badiou quote.

RDRR

Been listening to a lot of Ariel Pink, John Maus and, largely by virtue of spotify algorithms, Part Time the last few years. Figured Pink was a wrong'n, but the Maus revelation is shit. And in the wake of this just looked up Part Time to find he was also shitcanned by Mexican Summer last year for allegations of sexual abuse (which explains why he disappeared from spotify). Fucking awful. Something rotten in dodgy synth pop.

The Mollusk

The news is indeed shite but to be honest it's not really enough for me to stop listening to Maus' music, I'm not gonna deny myself the pleasure of rinsing "Castles in the Grave" twelve times on repeat whilst thrashing about under my duvet like a scared and confused baby tornado just because the cunt's mental. I bought his records second hand so I'll just stop streaming his stuff and then he gets nowt from me.

Pink on the other hand I am giving serious second thought to. I've always known he was a provocative lothario dickhead which was just about easy enough to ignore, but I've got conflicting thoughts on whether to believe the whirling dervish of comments now calling him out as a serial rapist, if it's all just the same balls to the wall "MAUS IS A NAZI" rhetoric or if it actually requires serious reflection as there's strong reason for it to be true?

all these people know each other (though tbf to Maus he has been espousing anti-porn tradcath shit of late, no sexual impropriety known) too.

Pink's current gf was all over reddit saying everything is lies and all the rumours come from a particular clique who hate him (why idk).

just disappointed on a personal level by Maus. I've met him a few times and we have mutual friends who he lied to when all this shit came out (said he donated to Bernie, oops, missed a detail there pal).

Seemed this mentioned quite a few times but only ever on this forum interestingly, unless I'm just a bit shit at scouring the internet (this is possible)

The Mollusk

The signs were all there from the start! How foolish we've been.

I hope this joke hasn't been done yet but it's the fuckin internet so obviously it has

Sounds like a ton of people in the industry have greivances against Ariel Pink that have been waiting for an opportunity to come out.

Who would have thought being a total prick for decades could one day come back to bite you on the arse?

The Mollusk

On Pink's insta story the other week I saw him sharing some stuff his sister(? She had the same surname Rosenberg) had posted slagging off "cancel culture" which I think is hilariously transparent. I mean even for someone as contrarian and shit-stirring as Pink is, surely calling out how much you hate cancel culture is quite indicative that you're having fear sweats that people are getting dangerously close to exposing and ruining you?

The Mollusk

Three posts in a row! Ambasaddor, with these... anyway

Fuckinell people love jumping on the "Well I always thought his music sucked so this is no surprise to me!" shit don't they? Stop trying to make your absolutely useless opinions part of the narrative somehow. Fucking internet.

imitationleather

I think this is the first time an artist I really like the music of and listen to loads has been pulled up on being a total bastard.

weyheyhey's stuff wasn't really my cup of tea.

The Mollusk

Yeah, same. This potentially will be the most CDs binned in one fell swoop for me.

I only discovered Ariel Pink through SoKo from when they were collaborating and possibly dating. SoKo was definitely keen to push audience's boundaries when I saw her live around then - getting quite pushy for women on stage and off to take their bras off and dance with her... the vibes were pretty iffy and I remember not staying till the end of the show. Don't know if it was her trying to ape Pink's style because she did a music video in drag impersonating him that same year.

EDIT: This is a review of the gig I've found:
https://www.thelineofbestfit.com/reviews/live-reviews/soko-100-club-london-26-03-2015

The sense of chaos was pretty exhilarating/scary in its way, but the review notes her pushy and aggressive stage persona, which combined with her insistence on audience toplessness was a bit off. She complained about the British audience being unwilling to strip off compared to the European audience so I did wonder whether there was a bit of a culture clash between her French sensibilities and British nudity taboos. Not nearly as bad as Ariel Pink's stage behaviour, but of-a-piece with the outsider synth pop scene perhaps.
