Lizzo was fucking great and all the sourpusses at Chart Music would have liked her set.

AYYYYYY UP YOU NEW PAGE WANKERS

It's been cool to hate Glastonbury since 2009, FYI.

It was better in the old days, with the stabbings, and the Levellers, and the ponchos.

I really need a GIF of Chris Needham going: 'All commercialised ... all commercialised.'

boki

Can't say I'm feeling any hate in what Neil said about The Beatles or Glasto, just a weariness with the received wisdom that both are to be idolised to such an extent.

dr beat

And for balance they have Taylor, who seems something of a Beatles expert without being immune to the personal shortcomings of the individual members.

I've noticed that the BBC coverage was a bit less comprehensive than previously. You used to be able to press the old iPlayer button and get (almost) full sets for dozens and dozens of bands  - but this year there was a vastly shrunken list, and a choice of as-broadcast highlights packages, which you can safely assume are packed with all the terrible landfill you were trying to avoid watching.

There are loads of full sets on the iplayer

Johnboy

I can't understand how someone can be passionate about the Stones and feel nothing for the Beatles, they're almost the same thing

I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm just saying I can't understand it

I am fed up with people saying they have avoided all Glastonbury coverage this year and are somehow proud of it. Yes the main acts are pretty shit but there is so much on there will always be plenty of good stuff on

I am fed up with people saying to those who avoided all Glastonbury coverage this year that there was plenty of good stuff on when many of those who avoided Glastonbury coverage this year looked at the bill and decided there was no good stuff on.

shiftwork2

Glad this ep included Start Me Up, but a little bit of me was hoping for a comprehensive coat down of Je Suis Un Rock Star.  It got a line and a laugh at least.

Superb stuff overall.  The energy and enthusiasm in this podcast actually seems to be increasing.

Durance Vile

This episode was a corker. I like this little interlude that they're doing with the pundits choosing their own favourite episodes. It's put a positive turn on things and is much more fun than them coating down random catshit from the death-rattle days of TOTP that no-one can remember anyway.

Had Soft Cell come up on the podcast at all before? I felt like standing up and applauding all the way through that bit.

The hidden bit at the end was one of the best ever, too. 10/10.

You weren't the only one.  When the first round of BOOP BOOPs kick in, I just wanted them to play the whole song so I could sing along and then get to THE RUMOUR.

It's another great episode, but I agree that the highlight has to be the little easter egg tucked away right at the end.

Also, this is definitely an episode where you have to check out the youtube playlist.  They've got the "Wuthering Heights" cover from the Top Of The Pops albums (you know, the one sung by Hattie Jacques) and the complete "Disco In The Snow" special.  Also you get a chance to see Startrax in all their glory.  Fucking hell.  Pricey wasn't wrong when describing what they look like.

Someone should definitely shower Neil with money to write a book about the Stones, I'd read it in a heartbeat, but his blindspot when it comes to The Beatles is a wee bit troubling. I'm very fond of Their Satanic Majesties Request, it's sporadically fantastic. Neil's claim that the Stones had a greater command of psychedelia than The Beatles is utter nonsense, though.

Nevertheless, his argument will be compelling and brilliantly written, even if I don't agree with it.

Johnboy

Yes, I can't be objective about it because I'd rate The Beatles as in my top three and the Stones somewhere around fifteenth

but I just can't see how you could appreciate a guitar bass drums band from the mid sixties and not make some relationship with the other one especially as the other one changed or rode the wave of so much sonically and songwriting wise. - didn't David Hepworth write a book about this , how the Beatles are so overrated they're under rated or vice versa ?

I mean, I don't think it's the same as me really liking Talking Heads and just not getting Joy Division

(I love New Order though. and Jimi Hendrix)

Chartmusic - haven't listened to this ep yet but if it's got Pricey and Soft Cell then we've got a goodie

Paraphrasing:
Setting up a knock off Pong console into a pattern that make repetitive beeps
"Stubbs would've put that in his fucking book."
Big laugh from me.

Really good one. Can't wait for 43.

Re-listening to the episode, they were right about "Abacab" (not a bad song at all, especially miserable Tony's synth work).  Also, Marion's "Sayonara Monsieur Kung Fu" is really good and a perfect example of turning one of the shittest songs ever released into a really enjoyable and catchy romp - maybe the lyrics are still terrible (my French is still at Year 11 level) but that lovely lilting French voice improves things drastically.

Also, I'm starting to get slightly obsessed with that Chi-Lites song from the '76 episode.  Fucking TUUUUUNE!

"You'd make a dead man come" is clearly audible over Skinner's link between Start Me Up and the next track.

Neil's view that The Beatles were all about "craft" is clearly crap.

I think he's right about that, actually, I just don't necessarily think it's an inherently bad thing. Well crafted doesn't automatically equal Yes, or something. Admittedly, it's a slippy slope.

phantom_power

The Beatles could be pretty sloppy as well. The White Album for fuck's sake

It's also one of Danny Baker's regular "bits" that The Beatles are actually under-praised / under-appreciated.

This is quite interesting : THE BEATLES' 35 Greatest Guitar Techniques *

I've been listening to the first ten episodes and they now seem ridiculously brief now we are accustomed to 4+ hours. 'What Difference Does It Make' by The Smiths is done in about 5 minutes.

I wonder if it's just that Al edited out a lot more stuff in the early episodes. I can imagine him wanting to streamline them a bit in the early days as not to put potential new listeners off.

Yes there are a lot of edits where the discussion seems to be in midflow and Al just jumps in and moves it on.

Camp Tramp

I need to listen to a lot of the old episodes again. I have no idea what to put in the top ten countdown.

Jockice

The David Sylvian impression has just had my laughing out loud for about ten minutes. Brilliant!

They're coming up thick and fast at the moment.  Us pop crazed youngsters are truly blessed.

Which was the episode that was "out of bounds"?

Which was the episode that was "out of bounds"?

The earliest surviving episode, from Boxing Day 1967. As Taylor said, one of the co-hosts is Savile.

I thought they were going to do an "out of bounds" episode at some point but this presumably means they never will

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

Their vituperative coating down of Peter Sarstedt's repulsive Where Did You Go To My Lovely? is an ace CM moment. As always, their utter disdain isn't performative, it's a sincere outpouring of emotion aimed at a thoroughly deserving target. Such a vile piece of music.

It's just too vast and unpleasant a subject to broach in detail, isn't it? As - I think - Taylor once said, when you watch a Savile-fronted episode of TOTP, you're effectively watching a crime scene. Where would they begin? They tackled Gadd in one of the early podcasts, but that discussion was based around a single performance. With Savile, the evil cunt's presence pervades an entire episode.
