There's something oddly warm about how they treated Fluff Freeman.
All they say is that he's pretty good.

I'd like to hear another Bee/Parkes episode.  They seem to be quite tetchy with each other at times

As I've probably said on this thread before I like that dynamic. She's pulled Al up on stuff a couple of times too and is really the only one of the six who's prepared to say "You don't half come out with some shite sometimes" and sound like they mean it. If I have any criticism of Chart Music it would be that it can feel like there's a bit too much consensus at times.

"I MUST HAVE MY NUTELLA!"

"I DO NOT LIKE ZIS HOUSE.  IT IS TOO SMALL."

Sarah also admonishes Neil occasionally. I'm listening again to #33 8/2/96 and she says to him "That's harsh man!"

I still can't forgive her for the 'Leave Michael Alone!!!' episode though.

"can't forgive" is a bit strong. She wasn't defending sexual abuse, just querying whether the charges had been proven.

EEEHHHH UPPP $5 gang, Simon Bates is ascending on his broomstick once again.  Can only mean one thing...

DrGreggles

Yep, that's my afternoon sorted!

Surprised by Sarah's year of choice though.
I thought she'd definitely go for something in the 90s.

Johnboy

phew, I'm glad it's not the '90s

DrGreggles

I meant surprised in a good way.

Me too. There isn't even anything quirky and amusing to talk about in the 90s TOTPs, the music is shit and homogenised and the presenters bland as fuck. I'd go so far as to say they should avoid the 90s editions from now on.

I'm away from any audio devices so would like to request a spoiler as to why Sarah picked this particular episode, which for me personally was a very bleak period of Thatcherite desolation* after the promise of 1979-82 was long dead. I appreciate that Prince and Frankie were bringing some class to the chart but the surrounding culture of selfishness and avarice was just awful.

*The only things keeping me sane were 'Hatful of Hollow' by The Smiths and 'Treasure' by The Cocteau Twins but they were a million miles away from TOTP land.

DrGreggles

Haven't listened yet, but hopefully she's taken Taylor's approach and chosen an episode to have a pop at something I hate.
Al's blurb says that there's a good non-FGTH number 1 though, so I think (by the process of elimination) I know what that will be and it's why this episode was selected.

Johnboy

ah, i'm gathering it's late orwell year, i just called no more lonely electric dreams - none more autumnal (no ?)

Singer initials CK?

Epic Bisto

CK?  That's not how you spell Shakin' Stevens' initials.

I'm still a poor pop crazed youngster, so I'll have to get my $3 worth tomorrow.

shiftwork2

New episode 'lands' half an hour before a long trip, just splendid.  Splendid!

I'm one of Simon Bates' High Flying Cats but I can never be arsed to log into patreon and download it early so I just wait for it like everyone else. I'm not bothered about any small benefit anyway, I just wanted to give them a bit more cash because it's worth it.

Another corker with my favourite duo at the helm.  Although the podcast as a whole has been on a constant high, this episode eclipses the last few for me.  Too many wonderful moments to pin down but I knew the whole Status Quo segment would be full of gold.  When they appeared on a TOTP episode from the mid 90s, I remember that annoying drummer the most.  Ginger Lynn with a newborn lamb's head indeed.

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

The arrival of a new Chart Music episode makes me genuinely happy. Diving in now...

shiftwork2

It's at the outer reaches of my own personal TOTP interest (1984, as, like Nigel Dempster, "I can exclusively reveal") but it's a blast.  Sarah and Taylor work well as opposites.  Loads to enjoy.

I'll be sad as fuck when this podcast inevitably loses its spark but there's no sign of it.

I know what you mean, but the polar opposite of Taylor Parkes is probably Timmy Mallett.

Sarah's great, I wish she was on the show more often, but I suppose she has some sort of life to be getting on with.

First big laugh of the episode so far: Taylor's entirely genuine "Jesus Christ" after listening to Limahl's bitter diatribe against his former Kajagoogoo bandmates.

shiftwork2

Of course.  Taylor is my favourite of the five, and Sarah is the opposite within those confines.  She's certainly the only one to challenge his Eeyore persona.  Presume we're not getting any new contributors anytime soon, nor would I want any.

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

I agree, it would be weird if someone else joined the gang at this point. Imagine if The Beatles made another album after Abbey Road, and Eric Clapton was suddenly part of the group. It would probably be a bit like that.

As for this episode, Status Quo "having a polish" in unison while watching grotty '80s porn is a profoundly bleak image.

famethrowa

Notice how Sarah sidestepped the possible "Best of the Beatles" routine? We know the problems that can cause.

Ballad of Ballard Berkley

Woah, hang on, is Taylor taking the credit for coining the term 'Frank Beardism'? Did he come up with that?!

sweeper

I read the Status Quo 'polish' interview on publication, and it has haunted me ever since. In my particular visualisation, Rossi still has his waistcoat on.

Especially since a groupie was in the room offering to shag them.  Bleak as fuck.

You get to hear about 90s music press and any gossip they heard about acts?
