Good call - just did a bit of a beat juggle with this, works well.

Shakers are perhaps a bit high in the mix (even just using the left channel), but nothing that the forces of PRODUCTION couldn't round out.

Mr Banlon

Memo From Turner : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3qgmVb4-kU used samples from previous parts of the film Performance.
Then those samples were sampled : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ohBgfb9vTQ

Do any ambient music fans recall where this was used? https://vocaroo.com/i/s1v0SANLg6J4 I was surprised to recognise it when I was just listening to some tracks off an album of world music. My money's on it being from 'Chill Out' by the KLF though it might've been on something by the Orb or the FSOL.

Reminds me most of a (possibly still unidentified) sample used in one of the 808 State Pacific State mixes but I don't think it's the same.

Cheers - I've noticed that certain unusual samples will crop up in several tracks from around that time so maybe everyone was using the same sample packs or something. Don't think I've heard this in more than one track though. Now I'm thinking it might've been from one of the mixes of the Orb's 'A Huge Evergrowing Pulsating Brain', but it's not the one on the album.

I like it when I unexpectedly stumble across the source of a sample - this often happens whenever I watch 80s or 90s sci-fi films and notice vocal samples which have been used in rave and jungle tracks. It's even better when the source is something fairly esoteric, as was the case here. I remember watching a 1990s documentary about the origins of Christianity and noticing certain samples from the soundtrack which were the same as those used by the FSOL in one of their 'From the Archives' albums. Though I'm not sure if the FSOL directly sampled the soundtrack or if both they and the soundtrack composer used the same source.

It's not Chill Out. 'Dream Time in Lake Jackson' uses samples of Basque shepherds and Tuvan throat singing from the soundtrack LP to Granada's 1970 Disappearing World series (tracks 10 and 17)

Do you know where the singers are from?

Ah, thanks. The track was recorded in Jordan, and is called 'Bedouin wedding songs' on an album called 'Music in the world of Islam'.

Are you thinking of this bit from the Pacific 'Britmix'?

(Nb. It's not the same)

Found it! It's used in the Peel Session version of 'A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain'. https://youtu.be/w_m4FbA9WyM?t=980

It (or at least an edited version of it) was previously used in this track from a 1984 Peel session recorded by DJ Greg Wilson and associates under the name Syncbeat. As I recall, they were a loose conglomerate of musicians who recorded all the music on Street Sounds' 'seminal British dance album' UK Electro

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HIZZLpMwuE#t=01m11s

How the fuck I remembered that is beyond me. I'll bet even Greg Wilson doesn't remember it.

So it was! Probably not a coincidence that the Orb used it as well.

Was Greg Wilson associated with Ruthless Rap Assassins? Or am I misremembering something?

Yes he managed them and I think he works with Kermit to this day.

I believe sophisti-pop behemoths Swing Out Sister also grew out of those recording sessions so, y'know, swings and roundabouts.

There's a new Selectabwoy mix out - he makes two mixes, one with the sampled records (+ interludes of bits sampled from films), then one with the hardcore/jungle tunes they were sampled on. A pretty good listen, especially as it veers between KRS-One and Enya.

BBC Radio Six 6 SIX 6 six VI? SIX 6 Music have been rinsing this Bishop Nehru track Rooftops rather a lot lately, and I thought the jazzy sample sounded very familiar and so I thusly did endeavoured to found out from whence it doth hath originateded.

Turns out:
a) I was experiencing 'de jazz vu' as I've never heard of Ted Picou Experience before, and
b) I prefer it without Bishop Nehru yapping over it.

Alright sample nerds:

I heard the The Message by GMF et al. is actually sampled (or contains an interpolation), but does it?

It's sort of an interpolation of Panaché - Every Brother Ain't a Brother.  Which is a great tune in itself.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ri7tSf_4Gi4

I remember seeing some old documentary where the producer of The Message was boasting about how they came up with the bassline and thinking, "Bollocks mate!"

Also directly sampled by Latyrx - Lady Don't Tek No (produced by DJ Shadow).

Sounds a lot like Ice Cube - It Was A Good Day

I love it when looking up a sample leads to something you had no idea existed but is just as good as the song that sampled it.

From possibly my favourite ATCQ track, Vibes and Stuff

Grant Green - Down Here on the Ground

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVvYwx2DbyQ

And possibly my favourite noise track

Pita - Get Out

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRuOwNvz99g

samples this beaut from Morricone - Come Maddalena    (sample at 3.44, Sorry, I don't know how to link to the right spot)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXPrlwAiG40

The whole track is wonderful (this is probably the fifth time I've posted it!). Also could anyone tell me what instrument is being played on the sampled bit?

Zither?
Electric harpsichord, I think. You can see one being played on videos of his live performances of the track with an orchestra.
