A new self-interview, this one measured at 6000RPM (rattleds per minute), is absolutely bonkers right out of the gate

QuoteEveryone ultimately prefers their own race ... does this make everyone racist? The people who reduce every conversation down to a matter of race could be said to be the most traditionally 'racist' because everything in life is NOT exclusively a question of race, so why make it so? Diversity can't possibly be a strength if everyone has ideas that will never correspond. If borders are such terrible things then why did they ever exist in the first place? Borders bring order.

A rush and a push and the land that
We stand on is ours
It has been before
So it shall be again
And people who are uglier than you and I
They take what they need and just leave

A rush and a push and the land
We stand on is ours
It has been before
So why can't it be now?
And people who are weaker than you and I
They take what they want from life

QuoteEveryone ultimately prefers their own race

What's he even basing that on?
The vast majority of the people I hate are white. Including Morrissey.

phantom_power

It's so easy to laugh, it's so easy to hate.
It takes strength to be gentle and not a massive racist bell-end.

Frankly Mr Shankly, Borders bring order.

Kevin Keegan in argument with staunch socialist Bill Shankly.

It's like he's gone so far over the MASSIVE BELLEND line that he's just going all in.

Serge would be proud.

Meanwhile, Billy Bragg said this:

QuoteNot one shy to express his own feelings, Bragg said: "I think he's decided that he wants to betray everything he ever said in The Smiths and he's broken the hearts of a lot of people.

"The Smiths expressed a lot of peoples own sense of disconnect with society and helped them to find their own identity – and he's totally trashed that. I'm heartbroken for them because I'm a big Smiths fan too. And I'm heartbroken for Johnny Marr because he's genuine, a lovely guy, and he doesn't deserve to have his legacy dragged through the dirt."

Bragg added: "I have no sympathy for him, no respect for him, but I have a lot of sympathy and respect for his audience."

I'm praying for The Smiths + Adam Lambert at Coachella next year.

I got bored reading all that halfway through but I do like he keeps banging on about the guardian like most loony racists do

Honestly can't even listen to The Smiths anymore. Absolutely hate this thick cunt.

Neomod

Like an old man shouting at traffic from a roundabout.

"Go, Go, Go, Go"

She is a star whoever she is. Loved the bow.

Why does the majority of his American fan base still not get this?

phantom_power

What  thin-skinned little prick. Hardly surprising I know but fucking hell

idunnosomename

who the fuck goes to a morrissey concert these days, let alone sticks up for him? though I suspect she was making a ruckus and disturbing the show so most people didn't care what she was protesting

still, I stand by the first statement

Garam

All day i've been changing the lyrics to How Soon Is Now

"I am a tooool...and a twaaaaaaat"

"Enoch Powellllllll...had a poiiiiiiiint"

Anyway, good on the protester.

I believe there are two Morrisseys. The first one died in 2004 on the way home from an enjoyable, witty interview with Jonathon Ross, and the second Morrissey took over from there, on a deliberate mission to trash the legacy of his grumpy-yet-actually-likeable predecessor. He emerged from the Black Lodge during the court case.

(If you feel particularly attached to any of the tracks on Ringleader, don't worry; they were leftovers from the first Morrissey. 'You Have Killed Me' indeed).

If the first Morrissey of my theory did too many dodgy things in the 90s for your tastes, it might help to predicate another Morrissey to account for them. Perhaps this in-between Morrissey got off to a wobbly start with Kill Uncle, and then painted loads of scars on himself and waved the Union Jack everywhere.

Whatever the case, the incredible, thoughtful lyricist of The Smiths definitely died at some point.

He wrote 'Bengali In Platforms' when he was still in The Smiths, and made his infamous claim that you had to be black to get on TOTP in 1986, so I think the rot was already setting in before he went solo.

One of the greatest Smiths singles ("Sweet & Tender Hooligan") is more or less overtly right-wing. Legendary band but Moz was always a bit dodgy.

Cardenio I

Yeah the real problem with Morrissey is that there aren't two of him at all. The problem is that knowing what we know now we can see properly what he always was. It's like one of those optical illusions where it suddenly flips and all you can see is the rabbit. All I can see is the pompous, right-wing, self-aggrandising, small-minded child. I used to love the Smiths, they meant a lot to me as a teenager, but I'm now faintly embarrassed to admit that.

Seeing as the general public are getting more right wing these days, I can't imagine he'll have much problem selling tickets.

sevendaughters

his tickets aren't moving in UK/EU anymore but the US has generally been a bit more separation of git from art

Is this down to his iffy politics though? Would he have been on the wane by now anyway? He's always moaning about not getting any radio play in the UK.

sure correlation doesn't equal causation, and when I started watching him in the late 90s he was on one of his sporadic down periods, but my gut feeling says that a lot of people think he is too far gone. i don't personally know anyone who would go and see him now, and i know a lot of people whose second or third parent was basically the music press in the 80s.

jobotic

I keep getting posts on Facebook for fake Smith bands' gigs. Presumably because one played at Ramsgate Music Hall, who I follow.

Bit grim innit? Like going on a demo/punch up following a Tommy Robinson lookalike.

Going back as far as 2017's Spent The Day In Bed, most of his singles since then have been on the Radio 2 playlist,
