MBV getting my hopes up

Were you not very disappointed with mbv?

Chriddof

I've said this before on here, but I think mbv is nowhere near as bad as people claim it is. It starts off rather dull, but then it gets interesting with the second third of the album, and the final few tracks are really great (and I'm including the endlessly looping one in that statement). I do wonder if some of the people who continue to slag it off actually bothered listening past the first three songs.

Twed

I only really enjoy New You (because it's pretty). The rest of the album I just appreciate.

Spiteface

I think if it had came out in 1995, it might be held in higher regard than it is.

It's still the best of the shoegazer comebacks, though.

Squink

I like it well enough. "Wonder 2" especially.

They weren't a shoegazer band, though.

Yeah, I guess one of main issues was how dated it sounded. That hideous mid 90s indie drumbeat that's on, I think, three of the songs.

Dr Syntax Head

How could any band realistically follow Loveless? I love mbv though.

holyzombiejesus

The "fully analog mastered" versions of Isn't Anything and Loveless are up for pre-order on the band's website now.

I liked mbv when it came out but soon slipped into just listening to the first 2 albums and that one EP with Moon Song on that I always forget the name of.

Tremolo.

The last 80 seconds of "Honey Power" is amazing.

Dr Syntax Head

Loveless and Isn't Anything coming out on vinyl. Oh yes mate

Yeah that is pretty much perfect music

I got the resissue of the EPs, because like a twat I never bought them at the time. I didn't buy the reissues of the other albums because I already had them, and liked how they sounded.

I bought the last album as a present for my wife - before we ever met, we saw My Bloody Valentine at the Cambridge Corn Exchange in 1992 - but for some reason have never, ever, listened to it. Not once.

wosl

You should listen to it.  I think it's top-loaded, but there are two or three peaches on it.  The warped, woozy intro to Who Sees You is gorgeous; inimitable MBV, bringing home the fact that, throughout their long lay-off, no one really got close to that stomach-lurching guitar sound.

Dr Syntax Head

I've only recently truly appreciated the new album. It's tough to appreciate anything after Loveless though. In fact anything that isn't Only Shallow is a pale sound in comparison. I think Only Shallow might be my favourite song of all time, I can't imagine a world where that song doesn't exist. I had a massive cry when I saw them play it in 2008. Truly magic.

Shields mentioned once that he'd like to remaster Ecstasy and Strawberry Wine. I really hope he does - they get dismissed for being more sort of lighter jangle pop, but I don't see how it's a problem since jangle pop is lovely. I would rather have a new album first though since I loved . I wonder if it'll be newly recorded stuff or more dipping into his backlog of unreleased 90s material? I think I read somewhere that She Found Now is the only proper new material on there, which surprised me given that it's probably the least innovative track when you look at the mad whirlwind of Wonder 2 or whatever Is This and Yes is meant to be. She Found Now is really warm and beautiful still - I was glad the whole thing wasn't unrecognisable from their previous works while putting new ideas forward.

Kevin played a 'solo' set with Godspeed's drummer in Iceland a couple of nights ago - sounds like all new material, but the quality's pretty terrible. Hopefully something more listenable turns up on Youtube, but for now -

Those new tracks are lovely. Glad he's back again. Makes me want to rewatch Lost in Translation.

Hour long interview with Kevin Shields here https://www.npr.org/sections/allsongs/2018/03/06/590948939/my-bloody-valentines-kevin-shields-gets-deep-into-loveless
Love him. Sounds like he's finally a bit sick of doing Loveless remasters but it was interesting hearing him talk about it even though I don't understand any of it. He described his new 'sprawling' EP in a strange way that just makes it sound like an album but maybe not as cohesive or something. Already really love the 30 seconds of this live song so really looking forward to that https://www.instagram.com/p/BdRQu-SnstP/

lazy twats.

I knew deb g for a while when she was driving cabs, late 90s. last year I saw her with thurston moore at the barbican. fuck me it was poor.
mbv were a laugh for a while, but they really needed to up their work-rate IMHO. the first album was great, but after that.... yawn. when the extremely difficult third album emerged, I did buy it out of curiosity, then immediately transferred it to stereo micro-cassette (yes, it's a thing) to make it sound more analogue. then lou reed died & I had to listen to MMM all the way through a couple of times in honour of it being his greatest work, & after that kevin just seemed like a puny mozart to reed's haydn. game over.

Now it's two EPs, one coming in the Summer and one early next year. Really excited for this new stuff.

Did anyone get the RSD vinyl Eno and Shields put out? One of the songs was released months ago and I really liked it but no-one's put the other one on yet.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEgS-sjR-3Y I'm sure Eno's used the exact same noises from Slowdive's Sing on this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lKk0fYEfO4

Epic Bisto

I though MBV was a good album, especially the last three tracks. If the EPs continue with that sound, they could be great.

The 1987 stuff (Sunny Sundae Smile, Ecstasy and Wine) is on repeat in my house at the moment and desperately needs a re-issue. There's some unsung gems in there ("Paint A Rainbow" is bloody brilliant and so great to sing along to).

VelourSpirit

I'd really love an Ecstasy and Wine remaster, shame it's overlooked since there's some great songs on there.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYeZETZspwI someone uploaded the other Eno/Shields track. Feel like I should be hearing it in a big cinema showing space shit.

holyzombiejesus

I read an interview with Shields where he said that he was considering just that. Ecstasy/ Strawberry Wine and the YMMR B-sides are my favourite MBV songs.

Rich Uncle Skeleton

Bloody love MBV, still play it quite often.

Anyone going to see them at meltdown festival in June? Got a seat in the second row so I'm not sure how the fuck that's going to go. Last time I saw them in brixton before mbv came out and I ended up fleeing to a balcony before they even came on and still went half deaf with earplugs in.

popcorn

MBV are one of my favourite bands ever but both times I saw them live it was so loud it was just boring. It loses all definition.
