Making a new thread for this. Looks pretty decent and all the reports I've seen have said they've addressed most of the issues the first game had. They're clearly making a big deal out of the fact that you're buying a full proper game this time around and not a base game with minimal content for them to then flog you expensive DLC that should really have been in the game originally. And it has a single player campaign.

New trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNGWh_-R1VE&feature=youtu.be

I'll probably pick this up as my Christmas game and leave Destiny 2 for when theres an ultimate edition.

Beagle 2

The first game is the reason I bought a PS4, and I traded it after three days. Any chance the gameplay is going to be imrpoved from pyow pyow die pyow pyow die? It looks absolutely magnificent, as did the first one, but there just seemed to be fuck all to it. But I'm probably done with BF1 now and have no time for Destiny. Maybe a bit of pyow pyow die is what I need.

Beagle 2

Wait, single player story?? Oh I am sold.

I think the actual game play mechanics have improved massively but from the looks of things its by no means a strategy based shooter. So still a lot of fast dying and re-spawning. The fact that the rest of the game is improved will make a difference though.

Yeah looking forward to that but it is short. I think I've read around 8 hours.

If you want to have a go at the beta. I thinks its available from today until next Monday. Game are selling PS4 beta keys for 10p. You can pay via paypal. https://www.game.co.uk/en/star-wars-battlefront-ii-ps4-beta-2060329

Beagle 2

I'm happy to take a punt on it. Hopefully this will fill the hole I currently have for 'quick bash shooter'.

Could you play matches with bots in the first one? I would find that really useful simply for the ability to pause while I see to the latest household crisis.

Blue Jam

This one's on my Christmas list too. Looks like a lot of fun.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 - Multiplayer Beta Gameplay Live Stream Reveal!

I watched some of this live stream last night. Gameplay looks good but not keen on the new maps.

They play the whole time in third person view but I prefer first person myself.

The demo is up now. I'm not sure I want to play it yet while I've only just started getting the hang of the first game after buying it 2-3 weeks ago.

mobias

I've got the beta. Fucking loving it so far. So much better than the first game. I love how all the clone troopers are Australian, for no apparent reason, and sound exactly like something out of Dads Army.

So far it seems exactly like the sort of game the first one should have been. I played the first one a lot and they clearly seemed to have learnt a lot about what worked and what didn't work. There's loads of flash points and bottle necks that create great intense gameplay moments, something which the one or two good maps of the first game did relatively well.

They're all clones of Jango Fett aren't they who was played by a Kiwi actor? I could be wrong cos the prequel trilogy I don't fully understand. If they're all clones of Boba Fett's dad why is there one called Captain Rex who's some fat bald old man in the cartoons. I'd honestly like an answer if someone knows this.

Oh yeah. I'd forgotten all about that scene where you found out Boba Fett, the coolest bounty hunter in the galaxy, was just some New Zealander with murdered dad issues.

So thats the beta of this over after a 2 day extension. Did anyone here give it a go? I definitely enjoyed it and will get the full game at launch. Looks like there's a lot of controversy over the use of loot boxes (see other thread) and a pay to win situation in the game. Can't really pass judgement until I play the finished game and see what its actually all about with a bigger picture of how it all works.

From the little of it there was in the beta there's a lot of fun to be had and it seems miles better than the first game. They've totally nailed the space battles this time around. It seems much more like the Star Wars game you always dreamt about them making, or certainly moving a lot closer to it anyway.

Barry Admin

I did play the beta a bit, but it didn't grab me. Looks and sounds amazing, but I'm fairly jaded about the whole Battlefield play style now. Capping points gets old.

Loot boxes really fucked me off too. I know from UFC2 that EA have really embraced play-to-win, and if you can't afford that, then the grind is ridiculous.

The flying stuff should have been right up my alley, but I couldn't for the life of me get the controls configured to a way that suits me.

I'm just reinstalling the first one here for another go. For it for a fiver in Asda but nevee even got past the tutorials before.

Shay Chaise

I just reinstalled the first one inspired by the best sounds thread. I remembered this being phenomenal and it is. Get a pair of headphones on and you're laughing. The sound of that ion grenade is an instant boner. I carved up a turkey with it, four hours after I stopped playing and then I sheared some sheep just because. Amazing sounds. Remarkable really how iconic that is shit is, and how much personality the blasters have in the films. They hit it out of the park and I couldn't give a shit about Star Wars.

mobias

The loot box thing has been really controversial but EA have somewhat addressed it here https://www.ea.com/games/starwars/battlefront/battlefront-2/news/thank-you-beta

As with the first Battlefront it'll all be very much a work in progress until they fine tune it all in the weeks after release via patches. If you're unsure about it then obviously wait the user reviews are in and people have got a gist of what the game is like. Obviously EA and Dice have got to monetise it somehow and thankfully they're not making the same mistake as last time and having paid for DLC that fragments up the player base. I'll withhold judgement on it until I've played the finished game next month.

With this new game it'll be really interesting to see what the single player campaign is like. Haven't played a proper Star Wars story driven game for bloody ages. A lot of the success of this new game will hinge on on whether they've managed to make the single player story any good or not. It says a lot about things that I'm far more excited for this game than I am for the upcoming new film.

Barry Admin

The first one is a lot better than I anticipated, I'm having a right old time of it here, and seem to have got the completely wrong idea from the tutorial levels. I picked up the season pass for a fiver as well, so it looks like I've a fair bit to work through. At one point I got to be Luke Skywalker and I fucked everyone up, that was ace.

I'd be interested in hearing more of your thoughts here, particularly regarding improvements to the space battles. I'm enjoying Fighter Squadron a lot and am doing well at it, better than as infantry, although I'm getting better there now I've unlocked some long range items.

Definitely very interested in the new game now, although perhaps I shouldn't play the first one too much, lest I get burnt out by the time it released.

mobias

The first one will have very short shelf life now I think. I suspect it'll die a quick death as soon as the new one comes out next month. Even in the last 6 months its been harder to find full games in anything other than the small cluster of modes and maps everyone gravitates towards. But yeah I'll definitely be posting my impressions on here. Be interesting to see what changes they've made since the beta.

Barry Admin

That's fine, I'm just worried I'll be bored of the gameplay by the time the next one comes out. What do you think is better about the space battles in the beta? I barely touched them as I didn't want to mess up my flying for GTA, and am kicking myself now.

mobias

The various spaceships handled far more more dynamically and are now much more manoeuvrable. If you've tried piloting a tie fighter or X wing using the first person in cockpit view in BF1 you'll know its quite difficult. In this new game its just as easy as flying in the third person mode.

There's now a few previews of the single player campaign of Battlefront 2 up. Looks decent enough https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbKpBTr8dJo

I played roughly 1-2 hours on the Beta. Only on the ground, that space battle stuff is a load of shite.

The class system was alright but probably a step backwards over the existing system. The first game is fine the way it is, you can customise your abilities enough for any playstyle and I feel they're changing shit for the sake of it. When the negative reviews two years ago were bashing the lack of content not the mechanics. It was nice to have a real genuine badass sniper rifle playing as the Specialist class and straight away I was able to get some 4-5 kill streaks with it.

How you now spawn into the match as squads is totally pointless. I like to go off and do my own thing. In certain situations you can be stronger in numbers but I don't like the game is telling me I'll earn more points if you stay together. For a multiplayer that is trying to offer you more choices I don't want to wait 10-15 seconds for a new squad of four people to all be ready to be dropped back into the action. I'll just abandon them around the first corner and instinctively go the opposite direction for flanking opportunities.

The Naboo map was crap, completely wide open courtyards and gardens for the first three quarters. Visually meh and just feels like a copy and paste job with no real landmarks until you reach the palace. It doesn't even feel like a Star Wars location to me. I'd rather be in the woods of Endor and getting lost up a stream. Once you get to the palace, well fuck me. What a clusterfuck of chokepoints. Every way into the building heavily defended and a chucking grenade into the doorway contest.

After playing Battlefront I for a month now, Rank 38. I'm just getting to grips with the Hutt contracts and unlocking the last few weapons. Admittedly and hour or so of playing the Beta you can't judge the merits of the Lootboxes and new points system but put it this you don't get the impression these new additions are for the benefit of the gameplay.

Barry Admin

Good posts, great to hear your thoughts guys, thanks. The first one really is cracking, and still seems good and busy on Xbox. You can get the deluxe edition for a fiver or something, quite regularly.

Not massively sure about the implementation of the power-up system though, seems like cunts can just camp them. Any changes there for the beta, maybe changes that mean they're earned, for instance?

Yes thats something that was a big problem in the first game and has now thankfully been changed. If you want to get into an AT-AT or become Luke Skywalker you can now no longer just hang around where the power ups spawn. There's now a points system where by you earn points for each kill or each time you help another team mate etc. You can then cash in these points whenever you die and respawn. Becoming a hero means cashing in the most points which means hero's don't appear early on in any given game - another good thing.

That was after feedback from the first game that the best maps are the ones that have a good smattering of chokepoints. I think most people are in agreement that the Jundland Wastes is the best map in BF1 for that reason. I loved that about the Naboo map. The end part of the game in the palace was so relentlessly full on. I can't want to see that balanced a bit better. Should be epic in the finished game.

For the second game, I really hope Fighter Squadron gives you more to crash into than just the ground, or other ships. I love it, but it's a bit aimless. Elite Dangerous got this right, by putting floating structures in space for their dogfight mode.

When you have someone on your tail in a Star Wars game, then you should really, really be able to fly through canyons, or take dangeous routes through massive destroyers etc, in order to try and get your opponent to crash.

Shamelessly killing a great studio too, like they have done so many times before. Arseholes. I've zero interest in yet another grindy loot boot laden shitty thing they are no doubt planning, but a good single player narrative star wars game would be great. That 1313 game that got cancelled looked really interesting.

Barry Admin

Still really enjoying the first one, trying out the 12 player modes now for a change. Also switched to 3rd person mode, and am getting used to it - feels even more cinematic.

I'm pretty good at Fighter Squadron, but I keep running into cheating, invincible cunts. I just stayed on a guys tail for a full minute or two there, and didn't a single point from shooting him the whole time. I think they get a hero ship, then use the drops to have infinite shields or something. The guy couldn't fly for shit, but was literally invincible and topped the scoreboard.
