Seeing as you, Nurse Nugent and Serge, are obviously into brutalist architecture, have you read Raw Concrete? I'm reading it right now and it's really good stuff...

No, but it's on my list! Phaidon have also just put out a photobook called 'Concrete', which is basically full of photos of buildings made of, er, concrete, which I might buy with my birthday money later in the week.

Resurrecting the thread as Tom Wood has a new exhibition here at the Open Eye gallery as part of events celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Capital Of Culture. It's called The Pier Head and is a collection of 70 of his photographs taken at the landing stages and on the Mersey ferries between 1978 and 2002 while he roamed around with his travel pass. It's well worth a look if you are in the area.

A new book has been published to accompany the exhibition called Termini that has 131 photographs including the images from the exhibition, most of which have not been published before. Currently I think it's only available in person from the gallery for £30, which is very reasonable for a hardback photobook. They also had a few copies of some of his older books but they are at their normal prices.

Dave Sinclair? He lived in Logan Towers in Vauxhall and took some very stark black and white images of the industrial decline and dilapidation of the council estates in the 80s. He also documented the Militant era, including the 1985 students strike against the YTS.

He has a lot of his pictures up on his Flickr account and has put out a couple of  books.

For the more figurative/documentarian end of the scale I'm a big fan of Tom Wood's work. He was photographing Merseyside around the same time as the much more celebrated Martin Parr...

I saw Martin Parr give a talk in Hebden Bridge last night. It focussed largely on the Unconformists early work. Anyway, he said that he had a joint exhibition with Tom Wood and Ken Grant in New Brighton due soon. Just had a google and it looks like it's on next month.

The Tashen release of Salgado's photo's of the Kuwait oil field fires in 9, Kuwait Desert on Fire....

The perfect mix I think for him with his more classical landscape like sensibilities ideal for the time/place and the human subjects not ending up as poverty porn.

I've ordered a second-hand copy of Jacob Holdt's 'American Pictures'
http://www.american-pictures.com/english/book/book-9.htm

I got a copy of that yesterday. Thanks very much for putting me on to that.

After watching Ray and Liz, I've failed to resist the temptation to buy Richard Billingham's Ray's a Laugh.

I don't want to sound crass but it was not cheap. It's the most I've ever spent on a book (previously the crown was held by the excellent photo book on Kowloon walled city).

Great photobook of Japanese tattoos... but holy shit, I did NOT pay that much for it!  Oh well, if you like Japanese tattoo culture and you see it for an affordable price, I recommend it.

Seconded.

If you're short on time but like this sort of thing there's a video of his talk here:

Recently got The Atlas of Beauty by Mihaela Noroc - it's basically just her blog/Instagram feed in book form, I'd have loved some more more in-depth text to go alongside the images and there's nothing hugely remarkable or original about the portraits or the concept, but it seems like a genuine labour of love and the subjects are gorgeous:
