"Come on, fucker": The Replacements

They are my new favourite band this month. Absolutely great songwriting, brilliant musical combo of drunk energy, pop punk, Byrdsian country, concise Springsteen anthems...

Check out the two 1986 SNL performances on this page (much better quality than the youtube uploads) and see how playful and wild they were on national TV:

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/inside-the-replacements-disastrous-saturday-night-live-debut-20160212

Harry Dean Stanton introduces them in the first clip! According to the article they roped him into getting drunk with them before the show, and Stanton had to be pulled away to host. Imagine that scene... would have been fun to be there, wouldn't it?

Some of my favourites:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxiOzhSEvkE - being a massive Big Star/Chilton fan I'm bound to like this as it sounds like Westerburg has absorbed Radio City and is now writing from inside it. Which means I also love this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKZqlBfdxU0 - Chilton attempting to return the compliment.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMqSTAqG7_A  - An underrated track imo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbhQKffugNk - Apparently Lorde recently covered this, so it's now their most popular track.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8J9WssSj7Q - Beautiful track, now in Big Star Third terrritory.

Do you like The 'Mats??? Tell me what you like! Come on fucker!

For years I've said Tim was one of the best albums ever ruined by weak production. Have to say the production has really grown on me in recent years though, works really well with Westerberg's voice and is dated as fuck in a way that's fairly distinct to itself without utterly destroying the songs in the way a lot of weak 80s production did (*cough*Husker Du*cough*)

Great band. Full of righteous hoarseness. I'm no expert and only really know Tim and Let it Be but they're both nigh on perfect albums. Had no idea about Lorde covering 'Swingin Party' but I love that tune, always thought it had a great ending, the way the chords are crafted, and how Westerberg varies and rounds out the vocal.

By contrast, 'Unsatisfied' has the most beautiful, heart-swelling opening, when that bright electric-acoustic picking gives way to the full band.

Such a great song and yet another - sorry to bang on about this, but it's important to me! - Big Star influenced track: sounds like a cross between Way out West (same tempo and beat)  and Life is White.

Fantastic band (that said, I have yet to develop much of a taste for their later albums after Pleased to Meet Me but I'm sure that will come in time). Thank you to Howj for posting that Hold My Life song up there - boy what a chorus. Just a perfect song.

One of my favourite drunken memories is going on a spur-of-the-moment trip to Athlone, getting inebriated, bumping into a stranger at the bar, discovering he liked the Replacements (hadn't met a Replacements fan up to this point) and then the two of us roaring out the lyrics to Unsatisfied in the smoking area. Probably looked and sounded ridiculous, especially when you consider the lyrics, but we had  our fun. Never saw him again.

Heh. I would have joined in if I'd been there. And yeah Hold My Life is perfect.

Come on fucker CAB! Listen to this band!

On the Old Grey Whistle Test with a fantastic version of one of their best songs

Do you follow Paul Westerberg's solo stuff Howj? Haven't listened to the one he made with Juliana Hatfield yet, even though I love her voice.

And what did you make of the reunion covers?

Howj Begg

I'm afraid I'm a newcomer to the band myself, so have not gone beyond their original run! I am however going to read the Trouble Boys book as soon as I can spare the time, and maybe that will give me and idea as to what to listen to next.

If you have any tracks you want to share, please do!

Calistan

Nah I'm not a fanatic as such - I have a few solo and Grandpaboy albums but didn't find them anything extraordinary. But there is the odd gem and his voice is always comforting. He did an album with Juliana Hatfield lately which I must listen to in full at some point.

Famous Mortimer

This fella has just been released:

The Ringer has done a "here's the best 12 songs on it" review, and I'm rather looking forward to it. Not cheap, though, but then it's not like they're going to release a lot more.

Kindness did a great cover version of Swinging Party a few years before Lorde

The one track that sticks in my head from listening to them a while back is Androgynous.
