I love the "copyrighted material" text at the bottom.

The legend lives on.  Don't share it though, yeah?

Bob Hoskins playing J Edgar Hoover in 'Nixon'

The portrayal of John Lydon by Andrew Schofield in 'Sid and Nancy' is very poor.

I really like Sid and Nancy but, aside from Chloe Webb, I think most people think that of the entire cast don't they?

I'm watching that Two of Us film now for the first time.  The guy playing Paul McCartney reminds me more of Paul Merton than McCartney.

Aidan Quinn actually does a pretty good job of Paul for the most part, I think, both in his mannerisms and voice, particularly once the film gets underway.  But then at the 40 minute mark some of his own accent creeps in:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MWxsgA-DJI

I had no inkling he had an American accent himself until the line "You turned your back on us remember?" - and for the rest of the scene he wobbles quite badly and it's a while before his Paul voice returns.  And I have no idea what's happening with his voice from 41:18 with his "At least I'm working..." rant.  Quite strange.

That's a shit scene, by the way.  I'm actually half enjoying this film, though I haven't seen it past the scenes I've described in this post.  Back into it now...

The 'Winston Churchill" in Inglorious Basterds was shit. Looked nothing like him.

I was...surprised when I heard Jason Segel would be playing David Foster Wallace, despite there being zero physical resemblence and Segel being mainly a bawdy comedy actor. In the event he went too far the other way and just muttered and stumbled for 2 hours as if he thought that's what straight acting is and how a venerated dead author should be portrayed.
And speaking of Tom Hardy playing real people and it being terrible, how's that Elton John biopic he's doing coming along?

Tom Hardy has reportedly left that project.
A stout young actor should be doing it. Jonah Hill? I don't know.

I bet Sacha Baron Cohen would have nailed that Freddie Mercury role. Stop before the moustache years though. He would just be Borat.

Rami Malek looks pretty great in the part from the photos I have seen

The portrayal of Woody Allen here isn't a dreadful performance, it's just seems like the typical U.S. TV movie casting of a real person. It's Hollywoody Allen.

In the opening scene, it's like somebody keeps tapping him on the shoulder.

I haven't seen it myself but my sister contends that Tom Hardy's portrayal of the Kray twins in Legend is the most ridiculous thing that may have ever happened in filmic history. I can easily believe this to be the case...

I don't think his performance is bad, more that the characters he's playing - well, one of them anyway - was a bit like that.  It's a pretty poor movie overall, but I don't think that's down to Hardy.  There are some proper Partridge delivieries, though, which makes it well worth a watch (see here: https://youtu.be/j1eQNUaOfZ4?t=35s)

Has anyone nominated Dave Franco's turn as Greg Sestero in The Disaster Artist?  That was properly misjudged and shit, even down to the fake hair/beard.  Had an air of fake Hollywood "movie-within-a-movie" casting to it, and arguably looked stupider than any character in The Room itself.

It was the inclusion of Austin Powers, as his right hand man which threw me.

Well, it was because QT always loved Rod Taylor (rightly so), and wanted to cast him.

Segel fancies himself as a multi-faceted actor who wants to do totally different characters and idolizes Peter Sellers. Problem is that he doesn't have the chops for that. The mid-section of The Five-Year Engagement was him trying to do depression and drama, and it dragged the movie to a halt.

The other one was DiCaprio Hoover, obviously he was too young and caked in make-up which is distracting and just highlights his voice being young sounding and wrong.

That's easily one of the worst - and most boring, and weirdest - films I've ever seen, but Leonardo's voice makes a terrible movie into a vaguely (only vaguely mind) entertaining one. It's just so weird, so off, I have absolutely no idea what he was going for and how he was possibly allowed to go ahead with it.

I don't think anyone who's played Nixon has ever looked even remotely like him.

Doesn't help he was so transcedently weird looking, but Lane Smith in little-known TV movie Final Days is probably the closest. That's also the best onscreen Nixon portrayal I've ever seen. It's actually an excellent film too, will dig it out tonight I think.

Seconded.  Makes an excellent companion piece to All the President's Men.

Is Tom Hardy's portrayal of Charlie Bronson shit or amazing?
I have no idea.

Twit 2

I love Bronson, and Hardy is magnificent in it. The bit where he offers Super Hans a cup of tea is a demented bit of acting. It's what I imagine Johnny Depp thinks he's doing in stuff like the Pirates films.

Haha that's great.

I'm going to watch that now. Big fan of Hardy hamming it up so looks like I'll enjoy it.

John Travolta as John Gotti?

He might be amazing in his portrayal of that rotten bastard, but this achingly 1990s sub-Scorcese trailer evokes Huey Morgan and Chris Evans enjoying a barbeque together in Whitstable tonight.

He look less odd and plasticky in that trailer compared to most other stuff he's been in of late.  Have they re-aged him with CGI?

Anyway, early word for this is actually quite good although, oddly, it would seem that average Joe Public has seen it before the critics (I know it's not actually out in most places yet).

Originally wanted to start my own TV biopics thread, but this is pretty much that.

https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2mlklp This has finally turned up.  From MI and NBC, Sophia Loren - Her Own Story
Rip Torn as Carlo Ponti! John Gavin as Cary Grant (in his final acting role before he became US ambassador to Mexico)! Edmund Purdom as De Sica. Aramnd Assante as her da, and the lady herself as both her mam and her young adult self. Directed by Mel "Willy Wonka" Stuart. Has Anglicised name credits for some of the Italian stars. It's confusing as hell, as they keep young Sophia off the stage, by telling us about her mum meeting her da. Has some nuns and Nazis clearly borrowed from some other nonsense being shot in Rome, Loren has since reprised the role of her mam in another biopic for the mighty Rai Uno. Because while we make biopics about Cilla and Babs, they have Loren. Has awkward cuts using footage of actual young Sophia in her early films, then cutting to 46 year old Sophia shot in soft focus from a distance, with a different haircut to the footage of the film she is supposed to be shooting.  John Gavin sounds like he's doing a Hitchcock impression at times.
Rip Torn's balding widow's peak makes me realise what a wonderful Norman Osborn he'd have been if Cannon had done their Spider-Man.

A la the Loren biopic has Kensit play opposite an actress playing herself, with the Great Gatsby scenes - Canada doubling for England doubling for the US.
https://youtu.be/2E8bOXNGq-o?t=1311 Andrew Preview is at the same time, ridiculous but accurate.  Kensit sounds vaguely Irish.

In the short-lived HBO show Vinyl, Led Zeppelin's large imposing manager Peter Grant was played by what looked like one of the Oompa Loompas. Comically poor casting
