I don't think it's at all obvious if you're not American. (i.e. pre-Internet, probably pretty much nobody outside of America had ever seen or heard of The Greatest American Hero. Probably still not many non-Americans have, outside of the context of that Seinfeld song being based on it.)

That's true, I did actually see the pilot of The Great American Hero once as it was released on video but that was a long, long time before I ever saw that episode of Seinfeld.
