Do I need to have seen the first Critters?

Depends if you want to remain pitifully ignorant of the rich, densely layered Critterverse mythology.

you'll be alright

Do I need to have seen the first Critters?

Here's a quick rundown of the relevant details of Critters 1 to ease folks into the sequel:

The Crites (mischievous flesh-eating demonic hedgehog things) escape from a space prison and flee to Earth to feed on its population.  Two faceless, shapeshifting Bounty Hunters, Ug and Lee, are sent after them.

Ug assumes the form of rockstar 'Johnny Steele' while watching MTV on the way to Earth, but Lee can't decide on a form so changes shape multiple times throughout the mission.

Ug's transformation scene is one of the better special effects in the first movie:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cX1x50vxTVs

The Crites land in a small rural town called Grover's Bend and cause havoc, especially for young Brad Brown (our hero / voice of Steve Smith from American Dad) and his family, whose farm is closest to the spaceship's landing site.  Sherriff Harv also has a bad time which leads to him being washed-up and no-longer Sherriff in the sequel.

Brad is best friends with Charlie, the town drunk & former baseball pitcher who believes in extraterrestrial life due to the alien abductions he hears about through his fillings.

Charlie and Brad team up with the Bounty Hunters and defeat the Crites.  Before leaving Earth, Ug gives Charlie a handheld device to call them back in the event of another invasion.

They neglect to notice the Crite eggs that have been laid in the barn, which for some reason take more 2 years to hatch, and that brings us to Critters 2: The Main Course.

That's not a Crite! It's either a Star War or... Baljit from What's Up Doc?  I'm sure I recognise it from somewhere.

That thing, right, is a Dark Crystal!

I only know The Wiz from its cover... I daren't read anything about it in case I sully my virgin mind before potentially going in with no judgement.  Although having said that, I assume it's a musical and I mostly hate musicals.

The Wizard however, I haven't seen that since I rented it as a kid and as an adult I have no idea how it might stand up as entertainment...
