I've listened to the above over and over.  Had never heard of the guy until recently.  Just love the energy of the song/video

Ezra is fucking magic. See him live if you ever get the chance, he's one of the most compelling performers going. Whether he's doing a full on whistles and bells Hallow'een rock 'n' roll show where he gets carried on stage by his band in a coffin or one of his more intimate solo shows where he starts howling poetry to the heavens whilst banging on a gong like a genderqueer reboot of the old Rank Films ident, trust me, the guy is not to be missed. I absolutely love him. And if you haven't already check out his best album 'Day Of The Dog' which would be anybody else's greatest hits set.

^ Pay attention to what this man's saying.

For me it's AFX's PWSteal.Ldpinch.D. I absolutely bloody love the Analord series, been listening to it a lot recently and this is one of my favourites. If this came on at a party I'd drop everything to be as close as possible to wherever the sound was coming from. It is an overstated fact but the dude's a genius.

Ferris

The Mountain Goats. Just shitloads of them.

Stuck inside All Hail West Texas again, but also In League With Dragons, having given it a proper listen on my nice headphones.

Waylon Jennings Live! is one of the best songs they've recorded.

Sweet jesus, worra tune that is. Certainly one of the crowning Analords. I've always thought that one particularly would be served well by a female vocal - no idea why. It strikes me as quite 'pop'.

Yeah. Tuck me in and be my breakfast, am I right? I agree that it is a pretty "pop" affair, with its pronounced and straightforward dance beat and all.

Speaking of female vocals, are you familiar with this absolute hoofer?

The Analord stuff is among my all-time favourite RDJ material. There's some seriously stirring stuff in there. Of course it goes without saying that he's a rare breed of artist that taps in to the weird, childlike wonder of the soul with uncanny ability, but some Analord stuff stops me dead with a furrowed brow, staring at absolutely nothing and wondering what the fuck's the point of all this stuff around me if a certain sound can confuse and awe my brain as much as this.

Where's Your Girlfriend has this bubbling cacophony of synth work that sounds like a whirling maelstrom just outside of my peripheral vision, that gritty sawtooth bit that sounds like a printer trying to speak like a human, the maddening hand claps, fucking perplexing piece of music.

Crying In Your Face, as well as having one of the most hilariously dumb titles of his oeuvre, is my all-time favourite. The whole thing is utterly brilliant, but the haunting, spacious melody that creeps in to the second half and then serves sparingly as the last 20 seconds of the track is something I could listen to on repeat forever. Aphex at his best is perfection and that one thing personifies it more than anything else he's done.

I am a bit drunk.

Hadn't really ever cracked the Mixes for Cash comp. Gonna give it another go, that track was sensational. Cheers.

Alrighty, if we're doing this:

The exhilarating neuro-imaging squiggles of Klopjob, which also for certain stretches features a sound like a length of chain being swiftly dragged along the floor three bits at a time.

The breakdown and build-up of VBS.Redlof.B which pulls your pants by serving you an incredibly satisfying drop, then distorting it and farting about with it only a few bars later. Then just pulling back and leaving you with that thrumming bassline.

I'm Self Employed, which has actually made me cry. The contentedness of the title, that plaintive little droid voice articulating its wistful melody. For him this is being human, this robot conversation is what it means to live.

And don't even get me started on Fenix Funk 5 which somehow manages to alternate completely naturally and organically between beats like knives chopping your brain into meatloaf and an unbelievable sort of swirling powdered-glass Bach chorale. The bassline coming in at about 2.00 makes me feel like I'm hunting something in a jungle.

You know what I also love about Analord? The name. 'Analogue + Lord,' sure. But also 'Anal-Lord', or, if you imagine it like a filename - which many of the track titles resemble - the abbreviation for a hastily saved porn video, analord.avi, 'anal or die.'

chveik

I'm really enjoying this stuff lads, cheers

alan nagsworth

hahah yes, nice one grassbath, thanks for validating and expanding on those thoughts. Fenix Funk 5 is a fucking heater, i absolutely love the drums on that one. frenetic and gripping.

i'm actually not that pissed but i do really love this forum for things like this. actual good thoughts, fucking personal stuff, what a song means to you. that chat is so much more meaningful to me than obsessive WATMM overanalysing of what synths aphex owns and specifically why the T69 Collapse video is good because of the software used or whatever. i don't care why it's ACTUALLY good on a technical scale of things. i just want to know how it makes people feel, on a deep, weird level.

I've got stuck in the occasional blissful trough I sometimes fall down of only listening to 'Plan B/I'll Show You' by Dexys Midnight Runners over and over again.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CTfGEFaV3A

Dexys purists like my boss and 23 Daves will stubbornly insist that the best version of Plan B is the single version they put out in 1981 that no sod bought. It isn't, it's the version on the album they put out in 1982 with 'Come On Eileen' on that every sod bought, clearly. For a start the earlier version doesn't begin with a knowingly dramatic voice and piano intro and the words "Take this ridiculous mood all away/Give me something newwwww I can say", the eternally thwarted uphill struggle for some kind of ill defined transcendency that keeps dissatisfied types like me and maybe you coming back to the best of Kevin Rowland's songs like sharks to chum. "I'll never ask again, I promise" and then those hanging organ chords, eventually into...

"You've always been searching for something....

BADADA-DA-DADA! BADADA-DA-DADA! Violins, drums and bass whalloping in now, fucking yes, Kev. What an intro, son.

It gets even better after that. The horns come in and do the BADADA-DA-DADA! BADADA-DA-DADA! bit not long after. There's an awesome breakdown when they all start chanting "PLAN B!" and Kev starts losing his shit about Bill Withers. And then suddenly on a dime it goes into a whole other song which features another drop dead classic horn riff and the trombone pretending to be a police car siren, which the 1981 single DOESN'T DO, you wrong "the best Dexys lineup was the 1981 one that never recorded an album, actually" wazzocks.

I dunno, check it out for yourselves, I'm not your mum.

Great to read about all the Analords again. Got them but no record player so don't get round to listening much.

No mention for Lisbon Acid? It might be obvious but that's because it's obviously great.

Yeah Lisbon Acid is fucking GREAT.

Surely if you own them on vinyl you can gift yourself a guilt-free illegal download off soulseek? Unless you stole the vinyl as well like some absolute maniac

I can't stop playing, having rediscovered it by accident after first hearing it on alan freeman's show back in 1978 (before it was even released, it appears), & that is a FACT.

knowing the band's output prior to this, the single with all this camp singing on it was quite a surprise.

That was great. Played it in one window with Are You Shivering? by Coil in another. Worked a treat.

Gregory Torso

Reese McHenry, soulful deep woods girl. She really rocks, she's got a band with a spider and a fox in it. I heard of her through this album Bad Girl, particularly love this track, it lifts and crushes me at the same time. Spinning it today, so miserable I can't even put my socks on.

I suppose if you like Detroit rock city, like raw dick bare back dancefloor filth, fucking rip out my spine and beat me to death with it?

(Sandy) Alex G - Gretel

Ripping my bastard head off right now, cannot turn it off. This dude's music has moved me in the exact same direction as Elliott Smith and Sparklehorse. Pastoral folk rock with a woozy, haunting edge that makes me stop dead and stare at walls. He is incredible.

Been having a trip down old electronica, breakcore etc from the early 2000s lane, as I often do. Usually involves the Venetian Snares Snares Man! single, Kinfehandchop and the lovely Printed Circuit.

And this Kid606/Lesser beauty. If the brekcore gets on your tits listen from 4 1/2 minutes in, it's gorgeous.
